In the Halo novels(Fall of Reach I think), does anyone know if James has an ID number(like Spartan-117)? Or, does anyone know who at bungie I could ask to get a definative answer from? It is speculated that his number is 001. Any ideas?

I'd like to assume so since all the others have call numbers.

I am...whimsical today.

From Halopedia
James was a Spartan soldier who never gave up. His call number is never mentioned in the book he is in, Halo: The Fall of Reach, however many speculate that his call number is 001. James was one of the Master Chief's best soldiers, and one of his best friends. We first see James when Spartan-034 (Sam) chooses him for a mission during one of Chief Petty Officer Mendez's training exercises on Reach. He is later one of the soldiers that survive the implants without any adverse effects. (unlike Spartan-084)

He later fights on Jericho VII in 2535 with John and Kelly. He journeys to Sigma Octanus IV with John, Spartan-087, Spartan-104, Spartan-029, and a few other Spartans. Specifically, they go to reinforce Corporal Harland and his Marines at Côte d'Azur, where they are fighting the Covenant. James is the first casualty as a direct result of the Hunters, getting an arm blown off by a Hunter's Fuel Rod Cannon. James did not give in to the pain, but became unconscious on the trip back to the Marine Base Camp. John carried him onto the Pelican there, where he got on with his Spartans, the Marines, and the surviving civilians. It is speculated that a new arm was either flash-cloned for him or he was given a prosthetic after this battle.

Later, when the Covenant attack Reach, AI Doppler told Captain Jacob Keyes that the Nav Data on the Circumference, a small UNSC prowler, was intact. Doppler said this clashed with the Cole Protocol. This meant that the Covenant could find the location of Earth. John chose James and Spartan-058, Linda. He chose Linda because of her near omnipotent abilities with a sniper rifle, figuring the space dock they were about to board would be large enough that her skills would be a tremendous asset. He chose James because he "never gave up". John's squad entered the Circumference through a Pelican.

After a short battle, James and the other two Spartans found a number of enemies. Many were armed with needlers, as they filled the air with the purple projectiles. Many of them landed on the Spartans, though not enough to be serious. One landed on James' T-PACK and detonated. Normally, this would not be dangerous, as a single needle cannot harm a marine severely, so a Spartan would be barely injured at all, if it got through his shields. But this tiny explosion set James's pack off, propelling him into space. John tried to raise him on the COM, but only got fragmented messages from him, filled with despair.

After John escaped the ship (rescuing Sergeant Johnson, Jenkins, and a few other marines) , completing his mission, though Linda was fatally injured, he got to the Pillar of Autumn. There, he asked Lieutenant Hall to scan for James. Sadly, she couldn't find him, and they had to leave the poor soldier out in space, where he would either be overrun by Covenant troops that were in zero-gravity, or he would die from simply being in space. John felt a pang of regret for his friend and comrade, but could not do a thing to help him. Though it is possible he is still alive, it is unlikely.
