News? Podcasts? Machinima? Active forums? Competitions? Jaffa Cakes!? OMG!
Thee Warriors!

Best. Mod. Ever.

I agree it serves little purpose, but I'd hate to see a post count replace it or be added at all. A post count can bring elitism to the forums, pointless posts (spam) and members measuring people's uberness over their numbers rather than the contents of a post. Same arguments for most things people want put on the site, but it's true.

What's the point of the Last Post date? I don't see the relevance of it at all. It would be better just to have number of posts or something.

It shows whether someone is still active on the site. For example, someone who's last post was 6 months ago obviously isn't. And post counts just don't work in a community this large and immature. Though, out of curiosity, i'd quite like to know mine, being the little forum professional i am.

I believe that they serve great purpose. For example: a bump in a thread. So one may either bump their thread; or forgot to add a something to their post, and doesn't really wish to/know to/ or even want to edit their post. So if there is a supposable "bump" in a thread, a member messages a moderator, the mod will be able to judge due to post time/date. Say if it were ten minutes, it might not be that big of a deal. Now if it were one week; three days; nineteen hours; and twenty minutes since the last post, it is probably quite obvious that someone is bumping. It serves its purpose, although it is rather subtle, there is a purpose.

As for post counts, I would rather not have that come back. The forums would be filled with spam, bumps, elitism, and more boasting and judgment. I honestly don't even see a point in post counts, there is none. To see how many posts someone has to see how active they are, but honestly; that doesn't matter. Quality of Quantity, that is my opinion, and probably many others.

2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

I also think it's dumb. I never used it once in my time here. They should replace or add under that a sub member title that we can write just for fun.

The 'Last Post' is a bit ridiculous, I think it should only be seen in archived threads. I've also thought of some more stuff to go under it:

Average Post Length (Words):
Average Post Length (Characters):
Average Word Length (Syllables):
Average Word Length (Characters):

All of which would be purely optional to be displayed publicly (as individual options, so it's not all-or-nothing), and should be pretty easy to implement, except maybe the third one.
No, I don't seriously expect any of them to be implemented.

Pretty good idea.

How about instead of last posts, a link to the search function that would show a default (Forums - Author) search with the member's name as the search criteria?

For example, my link would have this link.

... Zero results...

He's not talking about the dates above posts, rather, the "Last Post: 07/07/07" beneath member names. The post date is obviously incredibly useful. =)

You don't make a living from it. At most you're semi-pro. I could totally four-post you one on one, nub. >_>

And last but not least...

Use quote marks to search: "just another fan" turns up more results. While I'm here, I'd also like to congratulate you for this game. =P

In the case of personality conflicts (memberA really hates memberB) memberA could cyber-stalk and flame nearly every post by memberB.

That would possibly become a problem. However, idiots can do that already so long as they know how the search bar works. Changing the link would just make it more accessible.

Personally, I think your idea will do more good than bad. I've used the "Author" search plenty of times to tell apart the constant flamers with the one-time offenders. This will certainly make things easier (and quicker) not just for moderators, but for members too (they could check if they should be reported to a mod, they could check if they would like certain helpful members to join their group, they could check the member's personality and maybe just befriend them on MSN etc.).

I think "last post" is a fairly useful as it shows whether a member has logged in recently, but adding an "Author" search link to the information as well would be rather handy. Good idea.

Well, if anything, it should be swapped with "Last Login".

That would almost be as good as a "ONLINE NOW" marker.

The last post doesn't really make sense, but the "last login" or "previous posts" ideas make infinitely more sense.

What, my post? It's ok. I just post to see myself. It's fun.

The topic is about the "Last Post" thing, underneath our avatars.. I was commenting that it could be changed to "Last Login"..

I think he meant the 'Last Post' thing itself, Zag.
