How do you put a hard drives memory into another hard drive?
Please i am thinking of getting a bigger hard drive because i have very little memory left and i wanted to know how to put my old Hard Drive's ENTIRE memory into a new hard drive and install it in my computer.

Thx. ^^

P.S. Is there a computer help group?

You'll need some kinda of transfer program that I don't know of, another good thing to do is save all of the things you actualy care about on DVD's. Thats what I'm going to back up all my -blam!- and- umm...I mean umm...songs on when I swich to vista...ya...

Well, I can think of some ways...

If you have only have on HD, set up your new one as the slave, then copy over everything (long time). Then, switch your new one to the primary, and remove your old one.

If you have two hardrives already (like me), you could try setting up an external drive, copying to it, then find some computer with a spare HD slot, set your new one as slave, and transfer from the external to the slave. Then set the new one up as the primary in the first machine.

Get a second opinion, as there may be an easier way.

Things like that can be pretty iffy if you do it yourself. If you want to be absolutely sure that there won't be any problems, you should take your rig down to the computer store and have a professional look at it.

Most computers have space for a second harddrive so you are likely better off just buying a new hard drive, installing it, and setting it to slave. I am only saying this because 2 hard drives are faster then 1. This way you won't need to worry about files fragmenting, when changing which drive data is being moved to.
There are also some stores that will transfer your files I believe but I not sure which ones.

You still have to worry about files being fragmented. It happens everytime you move, delete, or add a file. The more often that you do a defrag, the quicker it will be. If you only defrag your drives once a year, depending on how much used space you have it could take a few hours. If you do it monthly, you might only have to defrag for an hour or so.

The problem with two hard drives is that files are put on half and half. Half of one file will be on one hard drive, half will be on the other, so you can't get anything off unless you have both of them at once.

Really? That seems like the dumbest thing possible for a computer to do. No way that's true.

if you do raid 0, then yes, as that halves loading and writing time. On a normal master slave config, then no.

Thats why anyone with intelligence uses it, it cuts information tasks in half, the only problem comes with transferring.

But wouldn't you rather wait a little while longer than be able to never upgrade your HD?

When you take a computer to the store what parts do you take?

  • 02.12.2007 5:15 PM PDT

Get Marathon Here
Get Marathon 2 and Infinity Here

Just the case/tower/chassi, whatever you want to call it.

No need to bring your monitor, keyboard, mouse, or anything else.

If you tell them to install Windows Vista for you do you need to take a monitor or will they just hook it up to one of their monitors and do it for you?

No, but we're plenty experienced with computers. You haven't come to a computer technical help center, but it's the next best thing.

You can, it just means you can't do anything independent with the HD. Like if I wanted to back up something on another hard drive I would have to plug it in to BOTH of the drives for it to work. But seeing as I only switch OS every few years, I prefer the speed.

As long as they don't ask a completely inane question like "How do I format a floppy?" or "How do I copy Halo onto a CD?" Then I won't have to fire up the noobtoaster.

Most of the PC issues posted here are the result of PEBKAC.

Why don't you want to keep the other hard drive and just install and use the new one?

If you want to remove the old drive, then you're looking at having to transfer the data from the other PC, you'll have to take extra considerations if you want the OS and programs to still work after you've done it. Like, you're best copying boot sectors, make sure the registry is there etc. I'm sure there are programs, but the only time I've done that, I did it by hand (by hand, on a keyboard and mouse ;) ).

As for copying data off RAID 0, that's not exactly a problem as long as you can fit the new drive to copy to on the same PC, and if you're out of ports, consider fitting a card on a temporary basis (they don't tend to be expensive).

Then finally, as for setting it to slave etc, most new computers don't care about the jumper settings and can manage the drives without any settings (which is how this PC is. No jumpers set up, all ordered in the BIOS).
