Bungie Friends and Family invitee, and sender of "random emails" about networking.

Can we ban threads (and punish users) that claim to have leaked information in the title such as "ZOMG HALO 3 PICS" or other such misleading titles [Example]? It is a cheap way of attracting attention - which for the most part should be based on the quality of the thread or the issue being discussed - and quite annoying. By not clamping down on them, it also encourages more people to do it, since it is so effective at getting attention.

Whilst I obviously can't speak for the moderators, I would also imagine it's quite annoying having to instantly investigate such threads to make sure it really doesn't contain leaked content; I know if I were a moderator it would annoy me to have to do so.

This is a rule; at least I am pretty sure anyway. It is called a bait-n-switch topic, those usually get locked. Sometimes though, they are let go, due to the fact that the thread does, in some way, relate to the title. It is a simple thing really, if you don't like them, don't click them; or just don't go in there at all.

There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

Um...if you claim to have leaked info, like your example seems to have, you will get perma-banned! No question, perma-ban! Go ahead, ask me a question....nope...perma-banned!! It is strictly against the rules to even make a thread that may contain leaked info. Even if what you are showing isn't leaked info, they will perma-ban you none-the-less. They don't care if it's real or not, you make a post that talks about or shows leaked info, you'll get perma-banned.

Today's post is brought to you by the phrase: perma-ban.

It is a bannable offense. If you take a gander at the thread again, you'll recognize that the user has been ninja'd.

Honestly people do it for attention. Just report anything like that to the moderators and let them have sweet stabbings.

Well, I have to concede I'm a little unsure of the stance taken these days, especially as I have seen many topics use such tactics without a ban being placed on the user in question. If all such topics are against the rules, it seems that this rule is not being rigidly enforced.

If Achronos or a moderator could clarify exactly what the stance is on these kinds of threads that would be a great help!

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Not true. There are plenty of threads (many very, very big) for the direct purpose of discussing the leaked content. Bungie.net moderators have directly stated that the discussion of the information is not a bannable offense, only the facilitation of the spread of the content.

Why doesn't Bungie just release more screen shots. Even if they gave us just one new screen shot every weekly update, it would keep all these ZOMG HALO 3 LEAKS! threads down. lt's due COMPLETELY to the fact that we barely get anything new that most people go absolutely crazy over the slightest whiff of information, never mind pictures.

Like l said - Bungie Weekly Update contains a new photo? Problem solved. People will be satisfied, and it will give them something to talk about other then ZOMGXZ LEAKS! you know?

And, by the way, don't put words in my mouth. l didn't say Bungie is depriving us of info. l know, l know, the vidoc, the E3 trailer, and everything else. But people, including myself sometimes, are greedy. We long to know more, and it's never enough (to some). These things get old fast, and one picture a week would keep things fresh and updated, not to mention controlled.

It's not the amount that bugs us, Ovechkin, but the randomness of the releases. Space the infoz out a bit, and everyone is happy.

SpaceGhostFlyer: Jessie!
Butane: James!
sir_brilliant: Team Rocket blasting off at the speed of light
Butane: Surrender now or prepare to fight
sir_brilliant: Meowth, that's right!

Well, if they claim to have info and don't use it, it is a bait and switch topic, which is against the rules, so it would be locked. If it talked about leaked screens and actually gave a link to them, it would be locked under the no scans of Magazines etc. law. So there is no real problem or a new rule needed.

Well part of the problem as I say is that the rule seems to be loosely enforced. As I have said, I have seen large threads use this tactic to get attention with no repercussions.

Firstly...It's pretty clear that you've been 'mislead' by this type of ploy before.
Bungie always addresses rumors regarding their games when needed so if you stuck your nose into a thread with such a title, you asked to be mislead.
Secondly, It's not the moderator's job to police the net and root out 'leaked' content. It's their job to moderate the forums so I fail to see how any such threads would be annoying for the reason you listed.

The rumor-mill is an unstoppable force. The mods know this.
Let it go...unless you honestly believe that this is among the most pressing problems facing the site today.

Well part of the problem as I say is that the rule seems to be loosely enforced. As I have said, I have seen large threads use this tactic to get attention with no repercussions.

The moderators rule by their judgment, the stickies, the terms of use, and the code of conduct. Their judgment is the thing you are talking about. One mod may ban a person for a political topic, while another may just lock the thread with a warning, and then a mod may just lock the thread. Ones judgment is above all things, unless of course it is severely against the code of conduct, such as posting pages of spam and flames. Now, if it is such a small thing as this, they are against the stickies, then a mod will most likely put their judgment as to what to do, as to what the stickies say. This is just small minor things mind you.

So, as you can see moderators moderate based on a few things. If it they were just like robots banning and locking all in offense, there wouldn't really be such a large support for the current moderators. They have personality, and thus have judgment. There is not a very solid base for a moderator to moderate other than the stickies, code of conduct, terms of use, rules in the mod group [sorry forgot the name], and of course their judgment.

If you wish, I may go more into depth with this farther, but I do not really care to bore the community with my babble. And just for future reference, this is all based off of what mods have stated in the past.

If I remember correctly, any implication of a Halo 3 leak is grounds for a ban.

Mod group = HFCS. No idea what that stands for, though.

The mods aren't aware of the contents of every single thread. If they see a title like 'z0|\/|G H3 l3eK!', of course they'll investigate. If they see 'Discussion of H3 Screenshots', they'll most likely ignore it, unless it gets a lot of replies quickly (which is generally a good indication of a flame war) or someone PMs them.

It's really up to the users to inform the mods of rules being broken. The mods simply prioritize when and where they investigate.
