Frankly, I find the Halo single player gameplay to be one, if not THE best, I've ever had experienced. The story (including the requisite novels) was even better. I remeber wondering why I only had to pay 50 bucks for such a visceral experience.

But I just can't get into multiplayer.

Maybe it's the solo nature of the team games, the fact that skill with the pistol and its explosive rounds is a necessity, or that my favorite weapon (the needler) is seriously lacking in oomph! (SPARTANs don't blow up?) ?

Halo, frankly was my first true FPS. And sometime later, the Ghost Recon series captured my interest. I will undoubtly get Halo 2 on launch day (I have several copies for friends reserved), but I doubt I'll be able to stand the UT-style multiplay. Now, if Bungie suprises us (more likely than not) with a 32 on 32 battlefield experience much like Battlefield 1942/Ghost Recon 2, well, what more could one want?

P/S:
This is not meant to start a "What are you smoking?" flame fest. I just wondered if anyone else didn't like the Halo 1 multiplayer experience?

Just give it another chance and do a system link. If it is possible for you get a 16 player capture the flag and you will know why the multiplayer is so great.

Now the question is...
What type of multi-player game do YOU want to play?
If you don't like it... don't play it.
CTF, KoH, Ball... these are stratigic type of games, not just best shooters win.

I would like to have 32 players in a game though!

Multiplayer was never suppost to be in halo. they may have though of it though. The only reason it actually got in, was because it would just show of the advantages of the System Link mode for the premier of the xbox. But halo 2 multiplayer is ment to be this time. So it's going to woop counter strikes A$$!!!1

In my opinion the multiplayer is fantastic, you can either find your own way in a 16 player or organise a small/large team assault, it depends as well on who you play with. UT is much more fast paced (in terms of movement and things not action) than halo and the slower pace of halo allows tactics to be used. If its at the same pace i dont think 32 people will make much of a difference (except for fun).

I don't play multiplayer as much as single-player. So sue me. I'm still trying to beat the game on legendary.. which is nearly impossible for me.

I thought the multiplayer was very good, but not great. Maybe it's because I've not played it with a serious amount of people (mostly 4-splitscreen).

Good think I've got Live and Halo 2's multiplayer is going to be a serious improvement. Multiplayer in Halo didn't play a big part like it's going to in Halo 2.

well according to everything has been said 2 of your problems will be solved in halo 2. the pistol(which is my favorite of COURSE) is supposed to be out the window. and i admit it is a bit overpowered but hey, whatever. also you said you like the needler but it does seriously lack in multiplayer. well frankie said that in halo 2 the needler will be a weapon to look for because they're giving it a few modifications. you should also be able to dual wield them. and who knows you might be able to play with more than 16 on xbox live so we'll just have to see.

Where on Earth did you hear that?!? Halo was originally (well, when it was first unveiled) designed around a huge multiplayer game that had the entire Halo as the map, sorta like what I've heard Planetside is about (never played it myself). It was going to be this massive team-based multiplayer game where you had no limits like a linear story or anything.

In the end, they chose the linear single player game because it was more conducive to telling a story, which is what Bungie is all about.

Multiplayer was always gonna be part of Halo.

Ever heard of buttefly.net? MS proposing a deal with them prior to Live launch? Anyways, I'm certain Xbox Live 3.0 will support dedicated servers exceeding 16 players. It's a requirement to remain competitive.

However, my original comment was on the Halo multiplayer style. Thankfully it's not as twitch as UT/Q3TA, but I don't find it satisfying. Now take a game like Ghost Recon, the guns are deceptively balanced, and as such gun skills comes into play.
I can easily prove this by challenging anyone here - I'll bring a suppressed, less-powerful M4 SOCOM - with minimal cover - and you might not find yourself at such an advantage as playing with the pistol in Halo vs, say, the AR, even in close quarters.
I think I've come to prefer military shooters - somewhat accurate recoil, muzzle flash a dead give-away, the unmistakable buzzing of an M60, etc. To me, there's just a big difference between Halo and GRIT's multiplayer that setting up squads, formulating tactics for CTF/Oddball/etc just doesn't improve the experience for me.
Maybe it's the fact that you have so many SPARTANs running around for no apparent reason whasoever. Heck, Red vs Blue summarily shows how little context Halo's multiplay has.

Again, I'm not trying to disuade anyone from trying out Halo's multiplayer. I just wanted to share my disappointment at the touted multiplayer aspect of my favorite game.
