Ok, sorry if I sound panicky, but I need to know wtf is up.

Ever since I let my sister download Maple Story (ugh...) on my computer, and I've installed Sony Vegas, I was down to exactly 1 Gig of HD space left. So I thought to myself, until I buy that 320 Gig HD I'm saving up for, no more recording, no more montag-ing, no more downloading even the slightest file, and hell, no M$ upgrades 'till then as well.

A few days ago, I was somehow down to 990 MB. I thought to myself, that it was nothing much, it was probably some update of some sort...after all, it was just 10 MB lost.

When I checked just now, I was down to exactly 689 MB. Ok, now it's time to panic. What the hell's going on, and why's my HD space slowly dropping? I sure as hell have NOT downloaded anything that's equivalent to 300+ MB, hell, I haven't downloaded anything at all ever since I saw I was down to 1 Gig.

Can someone here help me? Thanks in advance.

Not to make you panic some more, but it's actually 1020 MB to a Gig, meaning that whatever knocked your storage size down to 990 was actually a 30MB download.

Have you tried defragging the disk? It'll free up loose space here and there and let you better utilize the disk than you are now.

Random things shouldn't just be taking up HD space without you knowing about it. I would attribute it to automatic downloads or perhaps to your browsers. Try going into your browser settings and tweaking the cache so that it stores less locally on the computer. As for the auto downloads, try turning off the auto-update features on your AV and Firewall...

You don't have to download stuff off the internet to fill up hard drive space...

Don't panic. It isn't that big of a deal. Just delete some files and free up some memory. Tell me, what was the last thing you remember downloading?

You mentioned your sister downloading Maple Story... so what's stopping her from downloading more files? Did you let her on the computer recently?

lol try owning a 37 gig Hard-drive. as for your problem, start to clear your computer out? no more "oh, i might use that later" thing, ask yourself if you NEED it, and if you might need it in the next 10 minutes. if no to both, delete, and clean out your recycle box.
i would've said clear your cookies and such, but 300 MB is beyond that. make sure your Anti-virus isn't updating itself 24/7 or anything like that.
oh, and make sure your sister isn't DL'ing anything else

But that'll be no help if I can't find the source of the problem. Even after I defrag, and get like 3-4% more free space, wouldn't it still decrease? Thanks for the help/suggestion though.

Anyways, I speak to all of you when I say, I don't really care about getting more HD space at the moment. That can come when I feel like it, or when I finally get the 320 Gig HD I'm currently saving up for. But my question is: What is causing this blasphemy? (HD space decreasing part). If anyone experienced this before, and somehow fixed it, and/or found out what was doing this, any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Nope, when I said I let my sister download MS, I meant I downloaded it for her. She doesn't really download anything else; she sometimes uploads anime pictures (once again, ugh...) to her folder, but even 5 of them doesn't equal 2 MB... And no, she hasn't downloaded anything recently, besides an automatic MS patch, but that was like a mere 300k in size. Most likely. I know of NO patch for any kind of PC games that is 300MB...=/

EDITEDIT: And to ProgramLog, that is exactly what I have, a 37 Gig HD. xD That's why I'm saving up for a 320 Gig. =D

alright then, i renember back in the day we used to have a Pentuim 1.66, only had something like 1 gig of HD space.

link above shows you what tools you can use to clear up that space. Disk Cleanup is really good, Defrag helps, and Security Centre lets you dissable your other program's Virus/Firewall activities, so they cannot update.

****
Actually, the BattleField 2 patches are massive.

Sounds to me like you either have a bug, your browser is going nuts saving to cach, or your Temp folder is not properly deleting old stuff.

Go to your Temp folder, and delete everything from it, also go to your Temorary Internet Files folder and wipe everything out of there too. Clear your browser cach, and do a quick scan of all the folders on your drive to make sure there are no wierdly named ones, also open the add/remove programs window and check for wierd or unused software.

Also locate your swap space files and see if they are growing, if they are then that means you have too many programs running, or you just need more RAM.

You should also download and run Spybot S&D and AdAware SE Personal, they are both free and combined all but ensure any and all spyware/addware will be wiped from your comp.

And don't worry, their both small.

If you still have the problem after all that, then you likely have a virus and I will tell you how to get a free trial of the best anti-virus software on the market, it's fully functional as it's only active for 15 days, so it should work, used it on one of the work comps and it cought leftover registry keyes and .exe's from old viruses I had thought I had gotten rid of with Norton Antivirus.

It is a bit of a pain in the ass, which is why I'm not telling you right now what it is.

Three words, Temporary Internet Files
If you have watched any videos from google or flash videos the yare in those files, so if you watched a Flash video of Red vs Blue there goes 10 mb. Try clearing out your cookies, also Maple Story=Evil, my sister played it and it rotated her screen 90 degrees each time she restarted, and it is full of retarded/-blam!- up people, but less then Xbox live, brcause you will find a few decent people.

Yeah, Red vs Blue in low resolution takes up around 2.2 MB per minute.
I like my 180GB, its working fine so far oI have used 40 GB installing FEAR, Call of Duty 2, Battle Field 2, Halo, and Unreal Tournament. Plus 40+ extra programs, like Visual C++, C, Basic, etc...

Aw geez...I watched most of my RedvBlue episodes in mid-quality...so THAT explains it.

Thanks. But is there any risks of deleting temp folder files? I mean, would I lose anything valuable, internet, or desktop-wise? Just wondering.

BTW, CoD2, and BF2 is freakin' HUGE! I remember when I installed CoD2, it was like 7 disks, and pretty much took 1 hour to install. InfinityWard definitely didn't know about the DVD...

1. It was only 5 disks. Yeah I know "w/e who cares".

2. The Limited Edition comes in a DVD instead of a CD.

No. basicly, the only thing that happens is that your computer forgets all the sites you have been to. so if you type "www.b" in your address bar, It wont show up with a list of all the sites that you've been to that start with a B. and so on. And If you go to a site for the first time after clearing your TIF, It will take slightly longer for the page to load up.

Hey, what's wrong with anime, people? ¬_¬

Again, like I said, go into your browser and tweak the cache. The cache=Temporary Internet Files folder, as referred to by others in this thread. There is absolutely no harm in deleting the contents of that folder; this is just a place where the browser stores stuff so that it doesn't need to re-download everything again and again if you visit the same site.

For IE7, its Tools button>Internet Options, click on the General tab, Browsing History>Settings, and adjust the slider to however little you want to allocate to IE7's cache. For Firefox, its Tools Dropdown>Options>Advanced tab, Network Tab, and set the Cache to however little you want to allocate to FF.

Not to sound -blam!-y, but I suggested this option at the very beginning; if you didn't understand what I meant, it would've been better if you had just asked me to clear it up.

Deleting everything from your system temp folder, is harmless. Thats the place programs stick files during an install etc. Deleting your Temporary Internet Files will just wipe out all your cookies and any images that got saved to your comp from visiting a site. Your History will still be intact, but some pages you often go to may load slower once.

To clear your Windows Temp folder, go to C:\WINDOWS\Temp assuming your main drive is "C:\"

Do not delete the folder itself, just everything in it, depending on how much software you have installed on your comp and what it does, you may have a lot of -blam!- in there. Doesn't hurt to clear it out anyway.

But warning: If you still use IE5, then it stores your temporary internet files AND your history in there, so don't delete those two folders if you are using IE5.

-Think before you write. I always read the above posts to confirm that my question is still valid enough to be asked. Don't you think, that maybe, there's a chance that I DID read it, but don't use either browsers?

-You didn't have to be such a jerk to someone who is experiencing computer problems. You know what, FFS, just don't answer ANY of my questions and/or threads anymore. If you're going to prove to me you're no help at all, what the eff is the point. My respect to you as a regular member just went right out my half-frozen window.
