... Moderators in question could ban together...

It's our favourite kind of banning.

Anyway, this thread proves the fact that we don't need a special forum for debating. We're already debating in this thread. If you want to debate about something like politics or religion, that you can't debate about in the Flood, go to a group, or another site.

-TGP-

Um...TGP you spelled "favorite" wrong! What?? Wanna debate me about it???

As many have said, and I'll just reiterate (so I can justify this post), if you want to have some organized debate, do so in the flood. It won't be mature, and full of spammers, but you have to take the bad with the good. Now, if you want to debate politics or religion, I suggest finding a group that focuses on such, many are around for you personal enjoyment. I personally enjoy B.P. because I get to blacklist the spammers and flamers, along with debate issues. But you don't have to take my word for it [/Reading Rainbow]

Berserk, favourite is how we spell it here in Australia. Anyway, we can debate in groups.

It was just a video of me complaining about you, then looking up "favourite" on Wikipedia, all ready to mock you and stuff, and it redirecting me to "favorite".

Trailer Park Boys ~ One of the best Canadian made comedies ever.

It's also how it's spelt in Canada.

Favourite > Favorite

Without the "u", favorite sucks.

I refer you to my comment on boring one sided circle jerks.

Groups provide a different environment than the public forums, one which is unfortunately, almost always 1-sided and reclusive, but tha's just the nature of the beast.

anyone who's played more than you has no life

anyone who's played less than you is a noob

debates go one of two ways on this forum - they degenerate into a flame war (public forums) or they escalate into who can use the most complex words to make themselves sound smarter (most groups). If you find a place that has a discussion without ending up like either of these two, let me know :-)

HEY! I've been fighting that circle jerk in B.P. for a long time, and I'd like to think that I do a fair enough job. There will be no circle jerkin' as long as I can still be active in there!

The problem is too many people that cant handle intelligent. debate

"In order to be effective, truth must penetrate like an arrow - and that is likely to hurt." -Wei Wu Wei

I don't really see where the debate is coming from. (sorry couldn't resist.) But seriously, I write extended posts all the time for the purpose of debate. Sometimes I even offer an alternate opinion, in the hopes that responses aren't limited to "i agree" or "you're a nub".

I think the real problem is threads which ask a simple question, which Bungie has already answered. It seems like every person who sees a post like this feels the need to add their two cents, even if what they have to say has already been posted on the thread. THUS the post is recycled back to the top of the list, starting the cycle all over.

Not to mention, once a post has enough people responding it becomes a flame fest between three or four people, with the occasional person STILL responding to the simple question, with the simple answer, which has already been stated 30-40 times.

The issue is not a debate forum, as the moderator pointed out, most forum threads are a debate already. The issue is whether Bungie mods are willing to close threads that have run their course. Or answer simple threads and eliminate them before they spiral out of control. I know they are working hard, and it's difficult to place a higher value on some content. But a lot of thoughtful, unique ideas are pushed off the front pages, to make way for a one scentence response to an already pointless debate.

BTW, you really should add a spell check. I could really use it, but it would also prevent ironic mistakes like misspelling intelligent.

Yes, but if more people joined the groups there would be more opinions being shared.

And, I'm on the other side of many of those debates so it's still fun for me.

What you should do, is edit your reply, so that it's on-topic to this thread, such as saying, "which is a reason why there shouldn't be a debate forum here," at the end.

Now, on to my next point.
Just the fact that we are debating about a debate forum proves the feasability of it's existance. So, those of you who don't want a debate forum are in fact helping along it's chances by debating about it. To add to that, if you don't oppose it, then it will look like all the members want one. So, what we have here is a classic Catch-22. You support a debate forum if you argue against it, but if you don't argue against it, you are still supporting it.

That's false logic. We debate all the time in the Flood. PS3 vs. 360, Halo vs. Gears, etc. but that's much different from political or religious discussions (to name a couple touchy subjects). The ability to discuss or even debate a topic like this in no way proves a public forum could handle a pro life vs pro choice debate.

There's no rule against debating in any of the public forums. Just rules against what content you can debate about.

While I prefer not to get dragged into political or religious debates, but I admit that I feel the need to defend myself when others attack my opinion on anything, including those subjects. I would prefer it if they kept it on a Halo or Bungie related topic, but then again, the games are full of religious and cultural implications. So it is possible to debate religion and Halo at the same time, but that's just not the context people typically use.

It's not false logic, it's logic. Period. The topic of converstation here (the original post) was whether or not we should have a forum dedicated to debate. Debate does not necessarily emcompass only abortion and politics. Debate is debate. About anything, even debate about debate.
So my friend, I did not even address the issue of pro-life vs. pro-choice debate, and one could even say that you are trying to bring that debate into this discussion-where it does not belong.
I am fully aware (as I'm sure everyone else here is) that there is no rule against debate, but we are simply debating whether or not to have a forum dedicated purely to debate.

You missed my point. A debate forum would encourage people to discuss topics that are not allowed on the public forums. If you wish to debate a subject that is allowed you can already do so in the appropriate forum. Why would we need a separate forum? The only reason I could think of is to discuss those issues that are not even allowed in the Flood. That's why I brought up politics/religion/abortion, not to hijack the thread.

So I guess my questions would be, what would be discussed in the debate forum? Would you have a separate set of rules for this forum? If not why is it even needed/what's preventing us from already debating topics in the current forums? As you have pointed out we're obviously able to do so already.

Lemme point out that debating about debating is still debating. So we don't need a debating forum, as it happens fine in the forums already.

Did I mention how easy it would be to get away with spamming in a debate forum? Nearly all the thread would be pages and pages long, and it'd be hard to catch people in the act.

Exactly, and more importantly, there is a forum here for pretty much everything you could possibly talk about, including the catch-all Flood. It sounds like people are trying to define the WORD debate, (ironically they are debating it's meaning), when they should be asking, What is it we want to debate that isn't currently allowed SOMEWHERE on Bungie.net?

But I do think it is good that some people want to have a logical intellectual discussion somewhere on these forums. Many times when I try and create a unique topic, people tell me that no one on the forums is smart enough to discuss it. But I think there are plenty of rational intelligent people in the community that WOULD post, if there were more interesting topics to discuss. (and fewer pointless topics dominating the boards) Even this topic has pretty much served it's purpose and should make way for new ideas and threads. So rather than be part of the problem, I will leave it at that and go try and start a new one.

Debates happen all the time. It's the ones that are against the rules that are not allowed. There are several active groups for those topics. Several which I am part of.
