I thought it was my DSL gone bad, (ping is 267-300, used to be 33-120), but I played around with my filter settings and found this:

With ping set to < 150, Game type CTF, including empty servers, I get these many servers, plus 5 not showing when I scroll down.

If I exclude empty servers I get this.

Normally, I set it to <100 ping, but I wasn't getting any servers.

Is it just that my connection is sucking lately, or have people stopped playing? WTF is up with all those empty servers? Were they always there but I just filtered them out?

Also, can anyone in the New York City area give any recommendations on high-speed internet service? I currently have Earthlink DSL, was very happy, till recently. Now they're offering what they call "Super-fast DSL" which is up to 5X faster than regular DSL. How's cable's speed in NYC?

It might not be your internet at all. The Gamespy master server may have been having problems, the game may have goofed on the filters. I get the same thing sometimes. I usually just wait like a half an hour and refresh the list and there's lots of servers.

I hope so, but this has been going on for 2 nights now. For a week or 2 recently Earthlink was doing work on the local network and they had a service advisory posted, but they don't now.

Earthlink is my ISP too, and sometimes their servers go down or something like that at around 11:00-12:00 PM PST, and I can't access the internet, but I can play Halo Demo MP. Weird.

What times has Halo seemed 'dead?'

It looks like you filtered out all of the non-Dedicated Servers. That might be your problem.

Well, I got a normal, (68ish), ping and lots of servers, so whatever it was, it's fixed– for now.

Thinking of something witty to write here since 2004...

Well try CE. there may be 3 or so servers at a time, never more then about 10.

And they're all playing Coldsnap (bangs head on desk).

Aboutt he question on high speed ISPs.

Now, companies can offer you 10mega bit down and 1 megabit up, but that doesn't mean jack when it comes to gaming. Many companies internet connections become crappy do to high use during peak hours. I have 4M down and 384K up, but during the day i get 50-150 ping on UK servers, my friend Matthew is with AOL and gets 25 ping constant during the day and his speed is half mine.

So, you should look around and try a few out, high speed isn't what matters for games.

Cool, SimonJester, you live in NYC too? Wiat, I'll PM you, we don't want Igg stalking you...or even worse...Kim... <.< >.>

Anyways, yeah, try Time Warner Cable for your ISP. It's working great for me, and it's at an ok/decent price. I get 68-101 ping most of the times.

Good point. I've always gotten a good connection and before I got my router I tested my up and down stream speed, and I was surprised at how fast the up stream was. I'd been thinking of going to cable, but my up stream was much faster, plus, as I understand it, cable is like a party line, (more users= slower connection), but DSL is a dedicated line from you to the phone company.

An interesting thing happened tonight. I had a good connection speed, (67-110), and lots of servers in the gamespy lobby. I went to join a server called "Deadmen only" and got that message that says, "negotiating connection to server", (I always wanted to know what the heck that means– I never end up connecting).

After a while I got the message that I could not connect. When I went to get the server list, I had like 4 or 5 servers in the list.

This is a server that I've played on before and enjoyed, but now that I think of it, about half the time I get the "negotiating" message and can't join. I wonder if there's a connection between getting rejected by that server, (or any server) and my connection problems?

Probably interleaving, and in many cases can be safely turned off. It helps keep a stable connection at higher speeds, but at the cost of latency.

But why would it come and go by itself, without me changing any settings? And where would I turn it off?

There is some truth to that as cable connections are shared at the node while DSL connections are shared at the terminal, whether they be a remote terminal or a terminal at a building. DOnt kid yourself thinking that neither company oversells their bandwidth. If everyone were to max out their connection be it cable or DSL everyone would get crap speeds.

No matter what I do, i cannot join an internet game. I can get a listing, refresh...but when i doubleclick or choose join game..it does nothing. This just started happening like two days ago. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game 3 or 4 times. Any ideas?

I've tried these things and they may have helped, (though I might have server-side problems that come and go as Earthlink plays with their servers, and what I'm doing may have no effect): Shut down the computer, the modem and the router if you are using one. Let it sit for a moment or two. Then start the modem and router. Wait till their "ready" lights are on and then restart the computer.

I also rebuilt the permissions on my computer, (Mac). I don't know what the PC equivalent is.
