The X button switches guns to alternate fire, such as a grenade launcher on the assault rifle, heat seaking vs. high explosive rockets etc.
yeah...

no.

it really won't.

stating an opinion as fact is a terrible way to go, but that's a horrendously lame attempt if ever i saw one. prone, shield grenade, dash... all far more likely unless they actually have AR's with attachments, and i'm willing to lay ya 8-5 that most assault rifles (if they do take this route) will NOT have the grenade launcher/shotty attachment, leaving you short on teh destructive ammo.

on the dash note... why not? master chief never goes running his fastest. except when he sword lunges, possibly. it'd be great to see him do the ol' phidippides maneuver. poor phidippides. poor chief if he does it. :(

LB: Cycle grenade type (you have at least three types of grenade now, so they must be cycled rather than switched).

AT LEAST 3 TYPES OF GRANADE. Interesting choice of words.

That's what i was thinking. Since we already know about the spike grenade, he probably doesn't want to rule out the shield benig mapped to x. I would find that a little underwhelming after all the talk of a dash ability.
Still, the amount of "whelm" you feel when you first pick up a game is secondary to having a solid control scheme that will hold up for all 30,000 hours of projected personal play-time.

Ya good catch, and I'm surprise no one has found anything in the picture (the new art). Remember what the update said:

.” While it may not be anything new for fans who have been following Halo 3 all along, it’s still very cool, very iconic and evokes a sense of mystery and intrigue. It teases you if you will. Although, it does contain ONE very important piece of information. Cough.

This truly looks awesome!

But this sort of stuff can be put on the side of sidescrapers in the US but over here in the UK we're a little more...reserved....

I personally would love to see "H3" on the side of some very tall buildings in Reading but unfortunately i'm not sure it's gunna happen, Health and Safety and whatnot.

But my question is this, how, if at all, will the advertising in Britain and whatnot differ from the cool stuff in the US of A????

Ok first of all i think the x button will be a roll, i hope it won't but thats what i think.
As for the clue, look closely in the backround and you will see ships, they don't look like phantoms or banshees, or any other flying vehicle ive seen in halo or halo 2, but i can't make out what it is. Of coarse that could be wrong also.

I agree with jacobson but I highly doubt the AR will launch grenades. But I've been thinking that the mystery X button will switch your fire mode. Afterall, many First Person Shooters on the PC have a button to switch fire modes. I find it useful in the Delta force series to switch my M16 to semiautomatic to conserve ammo. Besides having a fully auto AR wouldn't be as good as an AR with burst ( 3-4 shots) and semiauto (as fast as you can pull the trigger). I mean say that the enemy is about 150 feet away, semiauto would help stop the recoil from making you less acurate. Besides didn't Bungie say there will NOT be a shield grenade? Seriously a shield grendade would totaly unbalance the game. But sprint would be probable.

so i thought that it might be cool that if after u get somthing such as a triple kill for example that u should be able to do an emote that like shows excitment or somthin like pounding ur fist on ur chest like king kong, ya know then the line about "B: Melee attack. Note: B may also be used to activate a subtle, but nifty context-sensitive feature." backs up my theory
notice " nifty context-sensitive feature" such as the context triple kill?
and i find it possible that the x feature is somthin of a dash or like a "roddie run" in gears of war
Lol, "Hold B to Beat Chest"

Huh? You're talking about having something akin to a teebag button, which has two problems (aside from being annoying as hell).
a) You can's really see yourself emote, and
b) While you stand there like a gyrating totem pole the uy who could have turned yourtriple into a kiltacular will put a spike grenade on your faceplate.

its simple, just have it cancel as soon as u start fireing ur weapon
just as if u were reloading and u pressed melee in halo 2

but it might not be as server as a emote maybe it just signals to ur team that ur cool by saying something indicating that u kick ass like ~~~~~~KILLTACULAR~~~~~~~"hell yeah!"

November is fall. Winter starts in December. BTW, the big clue Frank is speaking of is "Fall 2007." This is the first actual confirmation of release time period by Bungie, isn't it? My theory of the X button is that's it's a modifier that when combined with other buttons does something new.

I saw that. It was just part of the bridge in New Mombasa.
AND
The only thing that could have made this update better is if Bungie gave us actual release dates (instead of seasons). That would've made me ejaculate.

I like that there's this mysterious new feature coming, but I beleive it would make more sense for both new players and especially old alike to keep X as the action button and move this new mysterious feature to the Right Bumper. I say this for two reasons: Familiarirty and Comfort/Responsiveness. We are all familiar with X as the action button, and X seems to be more comfortable to press while in intense action and more responsive. I'd be fine if it was just reloading that was RB, having played Gears of War and gotten quite used to that, but putting ever action there just wouldn't feel right, especially the way the RB is placed and how it feels. I just believe it would akward to have the action button as the Right Bumper. While I think this mysterious feature which is obviously going to be huge but not as huge as the action button itself, is important, I think it can be placed on the RB en lieu of the action button.

Most informing update in a while.

  • 02.17.2007 5:38 PM PDT

I have been thinking about the "x" button and what it could act as. Well in GOW you us 'a' to go against cover or jump over something also in GROW you us 'y' to hide behind cover what if in halo 3 you can us x to hide behind stuff and dive maybe that would be cool but it would kinda take away from the halo feel and make it seem more gow/ gears of war.
