bah

A plain ethernet cable will do no good, you must use a crossover cable. This is becasue a crossover cable costs more, even though the price to make it is exactly the same. Two wires are just crossed. Just buy the Xbox cable, they aren't that expensive, but if you plan to link up more than 2 at any point in time, buy a link kit. That's a hub and four ethernet cables. you can buy the part separately but it will cost more.

For now, a link cable will do.

What? Are you on crack? A system link cable is £19.99 in the UK, while you can pick up 5m of crossover cable for about £7.

The reason you need a crossover cable isn't because they cost more - it's because you need a crossover cable whenever you link two computers straight together. And it's not two wires crossed - it's EVERY wire.
but if you plan to link up more than 2 at any point in time, buy a link kit. That's a hub and four ethernet cables. you can buy the part separately but it will cost more.
For this, you need a cheap hub (or switch, if you want more bandwidth for each Xbox) and patch, as opposed to crossover, cables.
