Location: Outlaws' Summit.

This member wishes to remain anonymous, and requested that I post this on said member's behalf:

On this site the rules are designed to stop people from offending others, they remove racial, gender based attacks, and attacks based on the lifestyle choices of members. Well there is something that terribly offends me and I find it to be completely out of line with the rest of the ideals enforced here.

There were 40.3 million people infected with AIDS at the end of 2005, yet people on these forums are entirely insensitive to this fact. They make light of the situation which has ruined millions of lives, and this is something that deeply offended me. When my friend told me about this site he made it seem like a really great place, but I don’t think that I would want to stay in a place where people are allowed to make comments like those that are made concerning this terrible disease. Please put some thought into this and restrict those types of posts as they are truly wrong in their message and content.

What do you all think? It is a bit of a problem, is it something we can come to a consensus on ?

Discuss?

Why the hell are you looking at this? Get out.

And no group invites, you jerk. I'm not interested.

... This seems kinda... silly, y'think?

It's not like they go about saying "Haha! You have AIDS!" or something. When's the last post someone even mentioned the word/letters/disease/something-I-need-to-look-up-in-a-thesaur us?

I dont know if it has been posted lately, but it is in multiple people's sigs. Also, ALIEN, just because something doesnt offend you, doesnt mean it doesnt offend others. The AIDS epidemic is something that shouldnt be taken lightly and I find it sad that people do so.

*Sgt

Well.. I have two stances on this:

* It really is ridiculous that people these days use "lol u have aids!!" as some kind of joke, failed stab at humor, etc. Let them get AIDS, and then see how serious it really is to joke about something like that. But then again, there will just be another phrase or term that pops up as the popular insult of the year when this one goes

* Just forget it. Unless you or a close friend/relative is being seriously affected by HIV/AIDS, then chill out.

My overall stance is kind of.. between those two :p sorry for the "vagueness"

I think people need to lighten up. Society has devolved to the point where we can't talk about anything anymore without worrying about hurting somebody's feelings. AIDS sucks, but remember, this is the interwebz.

Hold up. Now all of a sudden we have to be politically correct?

What about people with terminal cancer or drug addictions? Let's go about making it politically safe for furries while we're at it. Let's blam out words like "yiff" and such.

Maybe we should ban all forum posting, so we don't hurt the feelings of the blind......

That's generic spam in the first place.

You raise an excellent point. I have thought the same way of the subject. Whenever I see someone post something like "[/AIDS]", or "<insert username here> injects you with AIDS", it always annoyed me. It's so insensitive.

There's a point when "Someone might get offended" goes too far. People should be able to understand joking and insulting, and other people should know when joking is appropriate. If a particular member actually had the disease and did not want members to make jokes about it toward him, I think it is fair that those people stop. But if said member were to demand that all such jokes be put to an end and all members banned if they don't comply? That's just trying to push your views down other peoples' throats.

There was a thread many moons ago about mom jokes, and how they might be inappropriate to some members. While the member who complained had a right to voice such a complaint (and if I remember the thread correctly, plenty a-member was not approaching the thread with the right attitude), it is not right that everyone stop with all of the jokes just because of him and a few other potential members, though he would be within his right to ask that they try to not direct such jokes at him whenever possible.

Some people might take offense to the jokes, but some people might take offense to being forced to act in a very specific manner just because of what other people take offense to. I actually fall into the latter category. I draw the line at "You all must stop because I don't like it."

BUt they do not get banned for it.
That's why there's a private messaging system and a nifty little program to know what mods are online...

Despite the fact that I'm the kind of person who wants to slap people who are overly politically correct, I have to disagree.

Yes, most people are way too defensive of themselves and others when it comes to something like race, which is ridiculous. Yes, racism is wrong, but when people get uncomfortable when they say the word "Asian", or "Black" is just stupid.

But AIDS, a disease that kills millions of people each year, and causes misery and depression in those peoples' families and friends is no laughing matter.

You're an ass. Here we are, seriously discussing an offensive topic, and you go ahead and post an off-topic joke about the matter we're debating.

Kudos.

Hmm. Placed a good perspective on the "I don't like how we're afraid of mods" thread you made.

See what you're doing isn't "outlandish." What you're doing is spamming (as in not actually contributing and attempting to get people to flame ya).

I agree with you, Anonymous, in some ways. The people make light of it because the don't understand it, and therefore don't care. They don't mean to offend people, but perhaps it would do good to add some new words to the Blam filter.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me"

The fact of the matter is, this is a forum. Its just text on your computer screen, and taking it too seriously isnt healthy. You have the choice to ignore it or not, worrying about it wont change anyone's mind especially in a place where you run around with a completely different identity. No one has respect for someone who's face they have never seen or who's voice they have never heard. Its the same way on XBL, and letting it get to you doesnt solve anything.

We all know how serious AIDS is, but when people are just having some fun, is it really that big a deal?

Our world is so wrapped up in not insulting others. Calling people black when they are in fact black is now a discriminative statement, but calling white people crackers isn't. They just recently changed the politically correct name for blacks to Black Americans, because they aren't from Africa anymore really.

I think that sometimes we worry too much about simple things. Just don't let it get to you.

But the difference is that people are having fun at the expense of others. I personally have no problem with a little spam and fun, but there are better ways to do it and things like the aids epidemic shouldnt be joked about

How about all of the jokes about the French? Does a joke necessarily need to be here in order for it to count?

I hereby take offense to all comments about how people take offense about certain things, and demand that all such people stop posting immediately.
