So, with the new hawtness, I was wondering how it could make the groups less intimidating and more user friendly. How about an option to come up with "keywords" that users could search for and find your group? Here's how it would work:

When creating a group or checking back in after new hawtness arrives:

* Group Administrators have the option (not required) to write up their own list of, say, 10 or 15 keywords that describe the group
* Groups with no keywords entered would remain unsearchable by topic (to ensure privacy of certain groups such as smaller groups formed of the administrators of a parent group)
* Blam Filter is in effect for keywords
* An instruction would be given to insert unique keywords, including the group's title
* Example set of keywords: "MARTY ARMY O'DONNELL ELDER HALO MUSIC SOUNDTRACK BUNGIE ONLINE TEAM STAFF"

When searching for a group

* When a new (or veteran) group user wants to search for a group, they can either search by group name (the system already in place) or by keyword.
* The search feature would include simple boolean functions for ease of use, with the default being much like google if no boolean terms are entered (assume AND, then OR)
* A user who wanted to find groups that discuss Halo 2 music might enter, "HALO and (MUSIC or SOUNDTRACK) not (CLAN)"
* The search feature would rifle through the various groups whose administrators have entered keywords and return a list of results.
* The results list would include group title, group description, founder, and member count.
* Click and enjoy!

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

Nice idea, I actually like it and it would be nice to see something of the sort. I can't wait!

Ugliness, plain and simple ugliness...

Sorry I have been wanting to do that all day.

I like the idea, it helps you specify what type of group you would be interested in joining.

This would be nice. Good idea. Hopefully group founders would take it seriously - I can see some group founders putting completely irrelevant keywords in their group, so that, instead of your example, it would be like "lint, roller, pwns, everybody, at, halo, 3"

Of course, then nobody would ever find the group in a topic search and nobody would join the group.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I support this idea...

How would each group handle keywords? Would there be 15 unique spaces to enter in the data, or would it be one area where you'd seperate each word by commas?

Also, how would it handle numbers. If, say, the Sad Pandas, wanted to add "Halo 3 Beta" as their keywords, would the number be a unique keyword or would it be matched with "Halo"?

Besides that, sounds good.

It sounds like a great idea, just keep the "Search by Group Founders" in there, too.

Go Chiefs

This is a much needed feature IMO.

For some reason I believe I heard this is going to be implemented during the update; or maybe I'm on crack.

I'd love to see this. And 15 seems a bit much to me. Ten sounds more accurate to me, but 15 will work as well. It'd certainly help with the finding of groups that interest you, which is a problem I've been having for some time.

I think I agree with Muno. You don't want the groups that are just trying to get a lot of members putting in every common keyword just so that they pop up in search results. It's better to restrict it a little so that group admins have to choose their keywords separately. I'd go with 10 words maximum.

I agree, 10 keywords is enough.

  • 02.23.2007 8:33 AM PDT

agreed

I suggest three (3) to five (5) keywords, otherwise every chapter (group) will have the same keywords and the search would be pointless.
