Oh, i'm sorry....were you trying to kill something?

Does anybody know why my ping is always so high? I have a 10 meg connection(sorry if that means nothing to people outside the UK - i don't know how your connections are set up), so i should have a low ping, but when i play online its always about 500. Anyone know what i can do to lower it?

10 meg connection? Is that even possible?

Try forwarding your ports and closing down any program that might be sucking up bandwidth...

Sounds like you're playing on international servers.

What makes you think 10 meg connections aren't possible?

Could have interleaving turned off, but you'd need to seriously be wanting a lower ping! :)

Depends on the method of delivery anyway.

lol well I have a 5 meg connection which is standard Road Runner in my area. 10 meg would probably be some upgraded service over it and around 80$ a month. Then theres fiber optic (if thats the right name, if not plz correct it) which I've seen up to 100meg download and 12.5 meg upload. One of my friends on Player Connector have that connection and hes proven it by hosting a 24 player server with no lag XD

Okay, firstly yes 10meg connections more than exist, and where I am are not that uncommon at all.

First, what you want to know is are you on cable or dsl, 10 meg sounds alot like cable to me, which means inconsistency during peak hours. for having a huge ping your most probable problem is some sort of file sharing program like bittorrent or limewire being open in the background.

BTW, where I live a 10meg connection costs about $68 a month. Fiber optics is not used because it is faster, since both light and electricity travel at speeds way beyond our needs, even though light is slighttly faster. Fiber optic cable are both cheaper, and easier to install which is why their popularity is increasing.

These people know nothing.

Your latency has nothing to do with how "fast" your connection is. It has to do with what technology you use, e.g Dial-up, xDSL, Cable...

Having a 10mbps over a 2mbps will not help. Reason being a "ping" has nothing to do with how large the packets are, rather how long it takes for a packet to reach its destination and back "ACK".

If your pinging a server with a 32 byte echo, 10 000K's away, and a 64 byte echo 20 000K's away, the smaller byte echo will get their first.

Lucky for the Chinese users on here, for once size does not matter. :P

i got a 12 meg connection, 15 max i got once

but it really depends on your upload speed (wich mine SUCKS 350 = like a 6 meg upload) id just play in serverrs that are closer to you

we r?

Verizon is offering Fiber Optic for consumer and business here

But yes, close out all background programs as well. Also, this won't lower your ping all the time, because there are down times for servers and that can create weird occurences to your connection with the halo pc server, so expect to see high ping once in a while

  • 02.21.2007 7:52 AM PDT

In high definition baby!

10 megabytes? Wow! My download speed is only 1.5 megabytes and I only have 67-101 pings. You should not have a laggy gaming experience, but some servers will be laggish. Try to set your server list from lowest ping on the top to highest all the way at the bottom.

You idiots still don't get it... It doesn't make a difference how much you can upload. What matters is how fast it takes for the data to get to its destination, which greatly reflects upon what technology you use. Cable technology is the best for latency as the backbone of cabletech is using the speed of light to transfer the data, where as dial-up and xDSL uses the speed of electricity. Light travels faster than electricity, therfor cable gives you better latency.

Put two peripherals next to each other sending to the same destination.

You can have a 1.5mbps upload speed on xDSL, and a 512kbps upload speed on Cable. The data will reach its destination first if using cable.

You do know that cable still uses electricity, not light. Fiber optics use speed of light transfers.
Also a 1MB/s T1 is better then 15 MB/s Cable. Cabel is a party line. T1 is you and only you, no lag.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Could you go back to the Yahoo fight room now? We're trying to have a civil discussion here, and you're ruining it with childish insults.

If you haven't noticed here I have been the only one talking technical. The rest don't have a clue, as I would suspect you being the same.

Kolusion, you have no right to call the people of the Maw idiots, you have been here for a week. We basically act as the tech support forum on Bungie. If you don't have anything constructive to add that is on topic, don't say it.
I need to call Master Kim and Obi wan, they haven't been guarding the door again.
You are not worry of being called idiot, you idgit.

Don't dis people, DSL and Cable have the same amount of latency. The difference is that one has full access to its bandwidth while the other does not.
Higher bandwidth helps prevent warping because you are able to have the other players locations "refreshed". The thread starter could try only going to servers in their country, going to ones that have ping below a certain amount, or use a leaf blower to clean the inside of your computer.(Ask fastmatt if you don't understand)

It's a good thing you know what you are talking about right, with all the insults you are making...

I dont know why you think DSL uses copper for the whole route as once it gets to the DSLAM it uses fiber just like once cable gets to the node it uses fiber.

Sorry boss. Obi Wan and I were taking shifts and I thought it was my break and he thought it was his, so nobody was guarding the door.

Kolusion, you're being absolutely disrespectful to node, who is more mature than you'll ever be, who has already garnered the respect and friendship of almost everybody here. You've been here, like what, less than a week? You haven't even chosen a signature or an avatar yet. Are you smart enough to know how to?

People are curious, and naturally they'll want to know what systems others have. It's common, there's nothing wrong with it, and some people do care about what kind of systems others have. And as ART1LL3RY mentioned earlier, we're the Maw. We have plenty of experience with PC tech and we know wtf we're talking about (usually). Some people here know more about computers than you ever will.

So, GTFO, or STFU.

Well, Kolusion, I suppose I'm one of 'those' idiots because: I worked and paid for my pc. Yeah, the one in my siggy, plus two others.

Frankly, I'm astonished you would take the time to make such dumb -blam!- comment. But, I guess that's just you.

Back to topic: My cable is great for 8 megs, but only at certain parts of the day. ATM, I would probably only get 4 or 5 due to the peak hours of usage in my area. Cable is not the most consistent thing, but it's almost always fast.
