Lately I've been reading a lot of criticism directed at Halo 2 Vista. People complaining that Halo 1 PC was a crappy port already, that the ping is terrible for most people and that since PC gamers aren't getting the co-op option due to the impossibility of coordinating the AI (even if games like Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, G.R.A.W., Raibow Six: Vegas, Rogue Warrior and others games with more complex AI patterns have co-op options) and, given the “fact” that everything seems to be going so badly anyway, then Halo 2 for Vista will not be worth it compared to all the other great games that will come out soon.

Now, before anyone starts flaming me for saying this, I have to make one thing very clear: I DO NOT have an opinion on this issue. I've just been reading a lot of people bashing or defending Halo 2 Vista for a variety of reasons and I'm just curious to know what does the community in The Maw thinks about all this. I'm aware that I don't even have enough information to make a valid opinion so I don't even have one.

Anyway, speak your mind.

H2Vista has been a long time coming... those guys have been working on it for quite a while and although I was never a huge fan of Halo2 to begin with, I'll be pretty disappointed if they don't do a great job with it.

I've played it for Xbox the odd time, and I think I still prefer the multiplayer of Halo 1, so all I'm really looking forward to is nice shiney graphics and a continuation of where the singleplayer left off so many years ago.

Far as I'm concerned, that's not much to ask for... if they screw that up, I'll be a little upset.

I don't know if it'll be a crappy port, but keep this in mind: With Halo 3 (which will rake in millions of dollars for Bungie) in development, a port of a two year old game isn't exactly high priority.

Thats why a team from Microsoft studios is doing the port. So maybe they can concentrate on getting the netcode right and making some good new maps.

I kinda want it to be like Halo:PC's. I mean then we'd have to get used to switching from game to game. I know when I get on XBL I always find myself leading my shots.

Assuming I even decide to get H2V one day (most likely for the campaign), the main thing I want in it is the old H1 maps. Coag will never replace Blood Gulch.

I'm expecting a crappy port. Microsoft is probably spending too much time on Halo 3 to give Halo2Vista any real attention. They'll probably make patches for about a year, then just stop and let problems run rampant.

I'm there but, man this is really starting to sound like communism.
Long live the MAW.

there are different teams working on the games.
i believe that a team called 'Hired Gun' is working on H2V, while Halo 3 is another team, most likely larger.

It was MS that ruined the net code of HPC. Gearbox made a lengthy post making it clear the net code was built to be the way it was because of orders from Microsoft that it had to work with 56k, not that it did anyway.

Gearbox wanted it to be a major league game, and that's why the assault CTF mode was included.

There were things that Gearbox can be blamed for however that they failed to mention. Shaders for example.

MS also only allowed Gearbox to use one CD, and this is the reason why Halo had no custom map support, so it was said. However, considering that Halo is only around 20mb or so with all the map files removed (duplicated in Custom Edition), and it'd be even smaller if other duplicate files were removed, I can only see custom map support only taking an extra 1 or 2mb, if even that.

The reason I'm looking forwards to Halo 2 Vista is missing lead. I think that'll make for a fairer playing field. It does sound like H2PC isn't going to be that great anyway. The only things I've seen of H2PC and read about have been disappointments, like they can't be bothered to do a good job of it, so they just cut out any half decent features and don't replace them with anything.

I wanted stats, clan support, custom single player content support, vehicles etc. So far, it seems as if we're not getting anything new. Even the textures shown in those screenshots look poor.

In 2+ years they could have made a game from scratch, easily.

If they don't screwup the netcode, imagine how stupidly powerful the sniper would be. Pr0s in haloPC these days wipeout player and hit 10:1 ratios in servers, in halo 2, with no lead its gonna be ridiculous.

No crap. In MLG, in the top ten, the skill gap between the second best team and the eighth team are minimal at best.

On a good day, I can join some public servers and get some insane ratios. Imagine Halo 2, but with a mouse and keyboard. I shudder to think what would happen if they kept auto-aim and the large hit boxes...

You dont seem to realize the netcode was what Microsoft/Bungie ordered in their contracted port of Halo 1.

As I explained above. :)

Also, FireHentz, there won't be a H2CE. It'll support user maps out of the box.

As long as they knew that information up front they should have been able to make the code work properly. Other games have been able to support 56K and not lag like HaloPC. When HaloPC first came out I don't think broadband users exceeded 56K users yet and if they did it wasn't by much. I can't blame M$ for putting that stipulation in the contract and not eliminating half of their potential market. If M$ did not specify this point at the beginning and then sprung it on Gearbox halfway through the project, then yes the onus lies on M$, but otherwise Gearbox is not blameless.

I'm absolutely positive that Hired Gun will do a great job on porting Halo 2. Bungie will make sure the same mistake won't happen again.

You do understand it isn't actually a port, right?

They are creating a full new game technically. They are basically using the Halo 2 Xbox version as a base. But Ideas only. they are coding, texturing, animating, compiling a new game that is digitall un-related to the Xbox version.

If by Port you mean the same title on a different system then yes it's a port. But they aren't just modifying the game.

What? Isn't that what many ports are?

Well in the case of most ports. They use the same Code and textures and such, from the game off a console to make the new game.

Problem is not all the code works nicely with the target system. So errors, performance issues, and stability problems can occur.

But in the case of Halo 2 Vista they are basically building the game from scratch, but they know exactly what the target is. And they are building it 100% for one operating system which increases the chances of a very stable and high performing game.

I define Port as taking the original game and modifying it.

Most people here probably define it as just a game with the same title and gameplay, doesn't matter the actual structure

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

Honestly, I think H2V is going to be a lot easier than Halo PC, just like on XBox. H2V will probably be fun, but the veteran halo PC player will never accept it as better or more challenging. We will see...

The most hardcore of Halo PC veterans must submit to one positive fact about Halo 2. It looks better. :)
