I don't know if I like this Master Chief who's always saving the same dumbasses over and over. I think he should be a jerky eating, Pantera listening, life taking mercenary. "Did you just touch me, soldier? When you get to Hell, tell the devil that MC sent you, and I'll be visiting shortly." BLAMMO!!!! "Anyone else? I didn't think so. Let's move out." Mmmmmm..... A Master Chief that lives by his own rules. Rule 1, "I can always beat the French", Rule 2, "Anyone who dis agress or tries to harm or touch me, dies". 'Nuff said. Who agress? Anyone disagree, you suffer the first part of rule 2.

When I read the books, I don't get a sense that ONI or the UNSC could be called good. ONI especially sounds like something straight out of -blam!- Germany. And the Chief reports to them, and as far as I can tell, the Chief does not disobey any order. Except maybe orders from a certain captain that gets captured and taken to Covenant ships as a hobby not to rescue him. But I wouldn't listen to a guy with Keyes' sense either. So, you have to wonder, if ONI gave the Chief an order that he knew was immoral, say nuking a colony of rebels including the noncombatants, would he do it? I think he might. That might not make him evil per se, but he would certainly not be good either.

Good and evil is a complex subject, especially when there is a chain of command.

The Chief doesn't have any emotion or feeling to what he's doing, he just follows orders and keeps himself to himself. If he speaks, it's only to talk about the mission, if he acts, it's only to complete the mission. If it means losing a team mate for the greater good, then he'll do it. If he had the chance to finsih the Covenant but he had to give his own life, then he'd do it.

So The Chief is neither good nor bad, he can't be as he doesn't associate himself with any motive other then the mission. Well, in theory...

if the mc was evil then i think that the game prolly not be as good because if he was evil then there wouldnt much reason for the mc to care if other people made it off of halo and if the mc was evil then there wouldnt be much point to halo 2

Lawful neutral = reference to Baldur's Gate i think...

As for the actual topic, an evil MC would make no sense. It is not in respect of what the creators wanted, it is not in respect with the books.

As for all this french thing, it makes no sense either. The french version was indeed pirated, but is the pirate french ? You can only speculate. And you can't condemn all the french just because one idiot did something lame and wrong. By now, you must have guessed my nationality.

Well, I heard that in Halo 2, you can play like in Fable, turning MC good or evil. I don't know if MC can grow horns out of his helmet though.

Why does saving us make him good? After all, wouldn't the Covenant say the same about someone who saved them if they were threatened? And don't you believe that the Covies are evil? They think we are.

Good and evil is not a matter of who you save or what side you're on. People in both countries say that Iraq or America is evil. People in both countries say that Iraq or America is good. The simple fact is that there are both good and evil people in both countries. The countries themselves are without alignment. So are the "sides". That's the case in the Halo universe. The Covies honestly believe that we are evil. We believe they are too. So who's right? We only say we are because, well, we are us. See what I mean?

ok you won't die when the french pirates are slaughtered by me Rocket Launcher. also, Lawful Neutral is a D&D term.

MC follows order, because he's been trained to do that his whole life. However, he gets more good in the First Strike, when he becomes more like Halsey and tries to save humanity one by one instead of sacrificing for the greater good

From what I hear, the ending is pretty open-ended. But we'll find out in a few days.

Anyway, in terms of the good/evil thing. Good and evil are entirely social constructs. If by good you mean "in a way that's beneficial to human society as a whole." Then the master chief would be considered good. He's fighting for humanity.

If he were "evil" in those terms... the game would be stupid. There'd be nothing for him to do.

Now, in terms of how you fulfill the "good" objectives, you have some latitude in Halo... do you save soldiers, use them as cannon fodder, or kill them yourself? That sort of thing. IN that sense, the books definately demonstrate the Master Chief as being good. He's always conscious of who's at risk and always tries to save the most people possible. And that's cool... it's a nice positive soldier image ;-) Go MC!
