Subject: A motion to clean up the Underground

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Yes, cam, I do know I'm stating the obvious...

I think we can all agree that the Underground has gone downhill over the past couple of months. It is this reason that I am making a suggestion to help reinvigorate this place.

My plan involves three simple steps. All of these could be implemented, or simply a select few:

1.) Clean Forum Act:
-While it is normally Moderator policy to lock threads 95% of the time, I think we need to make an exception for a short period of time. A large exception.

It is true that leaving locked threads up helps communicate to members what is not allowed, too many locked threads (such as what we have on this forum now) has an opposite effect. Threads like this result from this build up of junk (as well as the users own ignorance).

If we were to eliminate as many locked threads that truely do not serve any purpose at this period of time, it'll make the place look more professional, as well as encourage more constructive activity. This would not be a permanent policy. It would only take place long enough untill The Underground begins to show signs of being self-sufficient.

2.) Retitle:
-The term "The Underground" suggests that "anything goes". It carries with it a connotation of blackmarket, unpoliced commerce. In its stead, Bungie.net should incorporate a nwe title that easily relates to Bungie Studios, such as "Board of Bungie", Kirkland Kronicles, or simply Bungie Studios.

I believe this would more easily communicate to people what this board is about, effectively reducing the amount of garbage that accumulates.

3.) Re-motto:
-The current description of The Underground, "Discussions about anything and everything Bungie is far too big. Those members who would rather not put forth the thought efforts could easily relate the Halo games, the site, and chapters to "Bungie".

In place of the current, I propose a description on the lines of "Discussions about Bungie Studios", or "The Business end of Bungie" (funny and accurate). This, along with a title change, could drastically reduce the influx of spam.

These are merely my opinions. Your thoughts are welcome, and I hope we can shape this place up!

Maybe they should take it off the top of the forum list.

Service Record

My numbers directly correspond to yours (I needed to say that because people seem to think I'm a bit condescending when I use a numbered list).

1.) The only real solution I can see here is for the Mods to PM the user before the thread is deleted, giving a short explination why it was de;eted. Otherwise, they will just repost, get deleted. repost, get deleted, claim Bungie is out to get them, start spamming (I have seen that happen to a lesser extent). Whether or not the Mods would be willing to do this is the real hurdle in this solution.

2.) I'm dead set against this. I remember when the Underground was the forum. It just wouldn't seem right to change the name.

3.) On the forum list to the right it says "Bungie General and Oldschool Games," if it says this in the forum selection page it might help a little.

Do not panic, or you will fail.

I had a similar motion a while ago to do this, but it got absolutely so action. I believe that there are way too many locked threads there.

Ahhhh, here we go again.

Cleaning up the Underground is extremely important to the Bungie forum community as a whole. You have the trio of major forums: Halo 3, New Mombasa and Flood. You have the advertising ability of Classifieds. You have the Bungie reps: Voting Booth, News, Gallery. You have the PC world of Maw. You have the old-school Halo discussions on Library. You have general Bungie chat here on Septagon.

You have total clutter and crap on Underground, with eighty-five percent of the threads locked on the first page. Why? Because the rules of the forum are very general, and nobody ever has a topic that actually fits into it, so they just constantly make new threads about how bad it is.

This was a very wise topic to create. Even though some of your ideas (such as changing the name) are a little extreme, at least you have a more well-written post than "Underground sucks", or "Delete Underground".

I say delete The Underground. It no longer serves any purpose. It cannot be saved. Let Bungie.net be rid of it and its filth.

You have general Bungie chat here on Septagon.

Actually the Septagon is supposed to be for the 7th Column and Community issues, not "general Bungie chat."

Example:

Thread entitled "The Halo Movie" - The Underground

Thread entitled "Groups should be searchable by topic" - The Septagon

Thread entitled "When's the next Marathon game coming out?" - The Underground

Thread entitled "The forums need to be cleaned up" - The Septagon

Thread entitled "I hear Bungie is moving its HQ to Africa" - The Underground

Thread entitled "Mods v. Community Members Deathmatch" - The Septagon

I vote we move The Underground and The Septagon beneath The Library. That way, H3 Forum is on top!

It's a bit confusing.

I just posted a thread in there last night concerning Bungie's clothing and it got moved to the Halo 3 forum.

I mean, it's odd to me because it seemed more natural to be in the Underground.

For instance, what if the jacket in question was not tagged as a Halo 3 jacket but a Halo 2 jacket? That wouldn't belong in the Halo 3 forum.

I'm not bothered about the thread being moved at all, but I was just illustrating how it's easy to make logical mistakes.... so to speak.

Chomskyite -
I noticed that your thread had been moved last night. In my opinion, it was a mistake to move it. Something like Bungie clothing is clearly the kind of thread that belongs in the Underground.

But everyone makes mistakes, I suppose.

I still stand adamant in the application of at least the first and latter of mu suggestions.

We can't just sit here and hope things get better. Action needs to be taken.

I'm hoping that the site upgrade addresses this issue.

Controlling fission events without incident since May, 2012.

If they renamed it Oldskool, perhaps it would deter some of the off-topic threads that happen. I actually think that after applying to Bnet you are require to go through some of the basics, overviewing some of the systems in use (Search Feature!) as well as teaching a new member about the forums and the purposes they serve.
As much as some people would dislike it, I think the Halo boards should go to the top of the forum list, as the topics there wouldn't confuse a trigger happy member(that wants to make a thread without thinking.) who hasn't been to the forums before.
Another reason The Underground shouldn't be the first on the list, is that it doesn't hold the most importance on Bnet anymore. It does have some great threads from time to time, but something really does need to be done.
