I downloaded a map (zanzibar) unzipped it, yet it doesn't show up in CE (not my first issue, thank you for your patients)

You don't have to download any new maps...that's optional. You can get them from sites like HaloMaps.org, but you don't necessarily need to have them; CE should still function normally without them.

Go here for to download "Custom Edition"
http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?pg=3&fid=410
Do the setup, it is the same as the regular game.
Once done with that get WinRAR from here
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Get the version WinRAR 3.62. It is the first one in the list of "English WinRAR and RAR release"
After that install WinRAR.
Now go to http://hce.halomaps.org/ and select the maps you want and select the save option for downloading and put them on your desktop.
Once they are finished downloading right-click on them and scroll down to the command "Extract to *name of file*"
This will create an open-able file.
To get to the Halo: Custom Edition map folder you do as follows
1. Go to my computer
2. Select the hard drive you have Halo on (This will probably be the C drive)
3. Select the folder program files(It will say that some files are hidden, tell it to unhide them)
4. Select the folder "Microsoft Games"
5. Select the folder "Halo Custom Edition"
6. Select the folder "maps"
7. Copy the .map file from your folder on your desktop that was made and add the map to the list
