Tact is for those who aren't witty enough to be sarcastic.

Then again, I would also like to say that this shouldn't be a bannable offense. According to the rules, spam will get a thread locked but shouldn't get someone blacklisted unless it's excessive.

But, the mods know best.

Well I usually ban people on sight for intentionally bumping and spamming by replying with this sort of crap. It ruins other people's enjoyment of the forums because their threads are being sunk by it. I believe it should be a blacklistable offence because it's one of the more serious and poignant (at least to me) problems with the current state of the forums.

I don't believe people need to be explicitly warned about it either. If they have even half a brain, they would realise its impact on the forum index (and impact on other peoples valid discussion threads).

If I make a thread, I don't want to compete with spam threads for attention. When you think about how the forums work, bumping spam is just as detrimental as posting a new spam thread. If people get off on ruining the forums, in order to amuse themselves in this way, I really don't see a reason to vary the punishment between starting a spam thread and contributing to one.

That's all well and good, but isn't it technically impossible for bumping a thread to sink it? It does, by definition, keep it at the top of the forum.

For someone with so many sarcastic smart ass comments you seem to not realize he was saying it sinks other threads by moving spam to the top.

If these were threads... look down

A
B
C
D
E
F
G

And E, F, and G were spam, bumping them would sink the other threads. See how that works? It would look like this afterwards... look down again

E
F
G
A
B
C
D

See how A-D sank down? Yeah...

Think before you post, esepcially if you are going to insult people with the whole saint comment.

Thanks for that stirring explanation.
You seem fairly well acquainted with the alphabet.

If you're dealing solely with bumping spam threads then that's accurate.
If, however, you're dealing with the spamming and/or unnecessary bumping of legitimate threads; while annoying, it doesn't do so much to damage the integrity of the thread.

Besides, if threads A-D are truly active, being bumped halfway down the page won't keep them from receiving hits. This problem has been blown far out of proportion by people who, like so much of this community nowadays, are simply looking for something to complain about.

In faster moving forums, especially in the flood threads get moved down quickly and having spam accelerate this process makes it worse. Also, the topic reguards in before the lock which indicates to me that it would mostly be used in threads that are going to be locked... I.E. spam threads.

Youre welcome for the explination, i know how badly you need it. Next time I will draw a diagram, after all we know your reading skills are crap as evidenced by your last post.

Dont attempt to use uncommon circumstances as a defense for your stupidity.

As for your comments reguarding people's complaints, arent you simply whining about the whining of others? I think so.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

I disagree. Bumping has always irritated me. It does cause problems, and I'll show you why. (I'm going to use the alphabet, insult me for it if you will.)

Let's say we have A-F, and the front page can only hold 5 threads. A is the most active thread, F is the elast active an so it is on the second page.

A
B
C
D
E

F

Now, imagine that a spam thread is created. That immediately pushes E to the bottom of the page. Let's assume that, since this is no far cry from the truth, members flock to the spam to throw in their "witty" comments before it closes. When they're done, surely some of the members posting to that thread will have forgotten about it or lost interest in it. Now the spam is locked, and every other thread is bumped down unless it has a reply.

It's not life or death, but it is irritating.

Yes, that's true. But since we're talking about people posting IBTL in spam threads, it is also irrelevant in this thread.

That is also true; active threads will be brought back up. But threads that people haven't noticed yet will also be pushed off. And since people rarely look at the second page for threads, those threads most likely will be lost.

I'm curious about the way your world works.
Humor me.
In your world, does simply making disparaging remarks about someone's intelligence make your claims true?
Also, in your world, does it make sense to insult someone's reading skill while simultaneously misspelling such common words as 'regards', 'explanation', and 'regarding'.
You might also want to familiarize yourself with the apostrophe.

It definitely causes a lot more junk accumulation than necessary, plus it's rude and unnecessary. It's a form of spamming, so it should probably be punishable as such.

Well, I sort of think people are overreacting about this one. I understand the negative of spamming topics that are legitimate... but ones that aren't and deserve to be locked? I don't feel too bad when I see an "In before the lock" in those ones.
Yes, yes, you are bumping up a bad topic, but hey, if it should be locked, it is more obvious then. And spam in a bad thread is a bit different than spam in a good thread.
I know, splitting hairs. Before you say anything, I know that a regular ol' member shouldn't decide what topics should be locked... but it is often right, and those are the ones I'm talking about.

I just hate making mountains out of mole hills... cuz hey, some people "in before the lock" linked text is sort of funny.

Come on Shiv you know the "In b4 teh lock" thing is (was?) an actual problem. I mean, I saw it in every thread that people believed would be locked, and even in some that wouldn't have gotten the lock at all.

The point is, it's not a good practice. I mean, you're bumping threads up by doing this, and even though they'll fall eventually, the fact is that at one point this became less than a fad and more like a bad habit for a lot of people because they thought it was funny.

It was akin to the whole "Pancake Bunny" thing. Stuff like that gets real old (and stale) really quick, yet people persist on doing it.

I guess you dont realize this is a webforum, not a place for gramaticly precise writings. I love how you focus on my calling out your stupidity instead of every point proving your argument wrong. It is an interesting, yet pathetic attempt to redirect attention from your own flawed points.

Please keep trying, one day you will win a debate, instead of having to try to redirect attention from your mistakes.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Okay, this has gone on long enough. The concept is very simple, and it no longer requires debate if all its going to lead to is an argument.

IB4L is both bumping and spam. There is absolutely no need for either of those activities on this forum, so people who do it shall feel the wrath of the ninjas from now on.
