because he was trained by the navy, ran missions for the navy, gets paid by the navy. he runs around with marines because they are the most abundant survivors that are fighting out in the field.

Marines are called 'marines' in the US, but in some other countries, such as Russia and France (I may be wrong, things might have changed) Marines are called naval infantry, aka infantry for the navy. That said, in the case of mutiny (this was how it used to be, not sure how it is today) on board the ship, the marines were supposed to defend the captain, and not side with the mutiny.
Now, Spartan 117, named 'John', his rank is 'Master Chief petty officer' a NCO (Non Commissioned Officer)
in the Navy. That being said, he is the highest ranking 'enlisted personnel' in the navy.
The only mistake Bungie makes with Master Chief is his rank and being called 'sir'. Being an NCO, this is a mistake. If you notice, in Halo 2, they even call the Sarge 'sir' which is wrong, at least by todays standards. Also, calling marines 'soldier' isn't right either even if they are naval infantry. (I may be wrong about this though, if so, please correct me).

Cheers!

I no this is off topic, but all this thing about marines and space reminds me of the space marines. Another bunch of genetically enhanced super soldiers. Maybe hes in the marines because in the US the sort of 'elite' soldiers are the Marines. If it had been made in Britain he may have been one of the Paras. Of course that argument goes out the window as the space marines were invented by a British company, and they're not called space paratroopers. Any way that would just sound -blam!-. Hmm.... Pointless post

For those who read the books, John: Spartan One-one-seven is called Master Chief because of his ranking. I believe the whole rank is Master Petty Chief. I'd have to read it again to be sure.

But he is a Navy man. Master Chief is a Navy rank. They should have made him a Marine and called him Gunny or something.

Are you suggesting that his rank would be "Master Gunnery Sergeant" or that he would just be called "gunny" because he is five years old and looks cute holding an assault rifle?

Don't forget to read the books. It really sets the full story out nicely.

He is a petty officer first class master chief. He doesnt belong to any particular part of the military he is just part of the Spartan II project so it doesnt tell u what part he with. When there was more of them in the book that was like a small army so i guess u could say that the Spartan II project was kinda like a small army.

ma·rine adj.
1.a.Of or relating to the sea: marine exploration.
b.Native to, inhabiting, or formed by the sea: marine animals.

2.Of or relating to shipping or maritime affairs.

3.Of or relating to sea navigation; nautical: a marine chart

4.Of or relating to troops that serve at sea as well as on land, specifically the U.S. Marine Corps

The very name 'marines' is derived from a sea term. The navy fights on the sea. If you think of space as a sea (which it sort of is), Chief's rank and the presence of marines both make sense. The SPARTAN project is a navy project, and is, like the marines, a section of the navy (I don't think section is the right word, though). Master Chief is not a marine, but he is navy. Or use this: The Marines are Navy, but the Navy is not Marines.

I read that it was a toss up between Mister Chief and Master Hanker. They fought about it and finally came up with the solution to combine the names... hence "Master Chief"
I think Hanker Chief would have been better though.

I'm retarded

hes a navy man cause all space operations aremostly navy, notice they call keyes "skipper" and in halo 2, if any of u have played it the admiral says ur father was brave, miranda keyes, the NAVY has lost one of its best because it has to deal with ships it is considered navy, as for why he fights with marines, other that SEALs no navy positions conduct any first person combat, the eingineeers and all the other positions on the ships are navy except for the combat...
