Keep in mind that this is the community for the developer of a VIDEO GAME. I shall hunt for demographic data, but I'm sure the average age for Halo 2 players would be about 15. And almost all of them will be male.

I have to agree with both of you.

The users b.net appear to be very complacient and not very vocal in their gratitude towards bungie.

Although Dalmedya was right when he highligted the demographic of the users, this obviously plays a huge part.

But i have to whole heartdly agree, you see the same posts by the ninja's; who are trying to be make these negative persons understand, but it always appears they do it to no avail.

Of the Bungie Staff who i have seen post on here, always have a negative slant on the community...and its is not unjustified; One day the straw will break the camels back and then the fans will again rise up and complain.

There is no winning for Bungie.

Regards

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.” – Psalms 46:1-3

I miss the old days when I could have an opinion and not be flamed by some immature kid that thinks he knows everything yet he knows absolutely nothing. = (

I try to stay away from bungie.net I only visit the underground and sept ocasionally for some intelligent debatin but most of the time I find Threads like....

Septagon....
"In Before the Lock!" (IBTL)
Capture card help

Underground...
I heard...
Bungie Got hacked...
Double Shot Killed Halo 2

Honestly the forums are becoming so off topic it is sickening.

WTF?! WHY would you did they to us?

Well I've been a fan of Bungie for quite some time, I've played the majority of their games since I was a young kid on my old Mac PowerPC though when I was younger I wasn't part of the community, just a fan. They bring such great an extrodinary things to us in all of there games, I cannot think of one game they have made that hasn't been ground breaking in some sense or changed the way particular games were played.

That said I would really like to address the community as a whole, after reading many of the threads day after day in the Halo 3 Forums and New Mombasa or Optimatch, I, without a doubt, have got to say we have become possibly the worst community a game developer could ask for. Very rarely do we do anything useful other than complain about the tidbits of information they give us, or flame people for the particular ideas they have on certain subjects.

Why is it that we cannot just band together and work with one another to help this community grow into what could possibly be the best video game community ever. I am tired of playing Halo 2 and running into people who talk down to the other players about EVERYTHING, even people own team mates will talk trash to them. It's ironic how many of us are loyal fans yet we continue to neglect the fact that Bungie gives us information and yet none of us rarely THANK them for it, they do not have to put out their weekly updates, nor do they have to give us the information on new or imporved weapons (see Spiker www.Bungie.net news) We really need to learn to appreciate what is given to us... That is all

You will come across members that are constructive in their posts. I tend to joke around a lot but if I see a good thread I try my best to add to it and keep it alive as long as possible. The problem is, the people you are talking about regurgitate the same topics and then flame eachother which buries the "good" threads.

I'd love to know your opinion on what a 'good' community is..

If you look at Epic Games, for example, they tell their fans how awesome they are, constantly, and they tell them what's good about their games. At least Bungie allows this community to think for itself. I rather enjoy the mixed opinions.

I might also add that people like MLG Cheehwawa, only in the form of someone who hates Gears of War, start posting the 'bad things' about Gears on the Epic Games forums, will get banned by the moderators on those forums. I've seen it plenty of times. Again, here we can at least express differing opinions and have great conversations in the end.

This also proves how large of a community Bungie has, that not everyone agrees with aspects of their games, whereas other developers with smaller fanbases have one big agree-fest on things and the discussions are much more limited.

That's just how I see it, at least.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I definately agree. Bungie.net is strongly Liberal. While they do keep things from getting out of hand, they welcome the exchange of ideas, concerns, and complaints. While I've never been there, the way you describe the Epic forums makes it seem like a Marxist community, determining what you say, when you say it, and balls-deep in self-infatuated propaganda <checkmate!

I've only visited the Epic forums, but if I remember correctly, then they wouldn't even allow you to compare GoW to other games and would instantly lock and ban the user who spoke up about how ridiculous playing ranked without friends was.

I'm glad to see that people gripe about what they don't like. While you can't make everyone happy, its better to hear the faults of something to try to make it more accessible to everyone who wants to play it.

And I don't think B.net is any worse than any other community... there's just a lot more people than most, so you see the downsides more often.

  • 03.01.2007 10:56 AM PDT

If you don't got it, you want it. If you got it, you want more of it. Of course if you don't know what it is, it's hard to get any in the first place.

Wha? I make a very long series of posts covering this very idea a few months ago, and GJJ smacks me down, completely ignoring the fact that 5 months ago he himself made the same statements?

Not gonna say it, starts with an H.

Don't overreact, Chocobo.

Jim was correct when he said the things he said, at that time, but I believe since then things actually have improved drastically, even if it's not incredibly noticeable. Also, Jim was agreeing with you, on some parts. He didn't necessarily "smack you down" on your opinion.

While I agree with you Arsenal, there are some logistical problems with your remedy of:

just band together and work with one another to help this community grow into what could possibly be the best video game community ever.

1. B.net members probably make up less than 5% of the actual online gamers who play Halo. So how exactly are we suppose to clean up the elmos and screechers who ruin our games online? Sent out militia hit squads to leave burning bags of doggy doo on their porch?

2. We do thank Bungie, all the time. We thank them by frequenting their website (most of us on a daily basis). We wouldn't be here if we didn't enjoy their products and website. We thank them by making Halo 2 the most played online game of all time. We thank them by filling their coffers with millions of dollars by purchasing games, map packs, t-shirts and little Master Chiefs with the kung fu grip.

I appreciate your little heart felt rant, but besides being individually responsible for the way we act here and online, I don't see a solution to your problems.

WTF?! WHY would you did they to us?

Indeed they do give us the alot of room to say what we wish and do what we wish on these forums, but I am sure it does not please them to see very good topics go under for the same old crap over and over again, which I also believe is not their intention at all. They are very lenient with banning people from the forums, which I for one believe is a good thing, though they could come down a little harder on some trolls.. There was a guy on... I think it was... two days ago? Who made a TON of stupid posts in the Halo 3 forums and still only had his threads locked. He had posts about "Halo 3 beta will be out March 21" and after that one was locked (he had posts before this mind you) he made a thread about "All you blaming mods need to quit blaming locking my posts"

  • 03.01.2007 12:03 PM PDT

I think the OP needs to realize that Bnet is not the entire Halo/Bungie community. There are plenty of other sites around the web which help exemplify the good of this community. Take HBO for example. Wu runs his own site out of his own house and provides content on a daily basis for thousand if not millions of fellow fans. Stuntmunt posts his comic three times a week. Do those guys have to do that? No.

That is just one site. There at least three other comics that I know of that HBO links to. There are several stat sites that I am aware of. There is Rooster Teeth and all of the other machinima communities. There are the many clans which can cater to perhaps any demograpic. There are the bajillion other fan sites and forums around the web. All these things that people do as fans are good, at least in my eye, and they do it without having to.

As for Bnet, there are a lot of bad apples. But, there are also a lot of good members here as well. I have been here for just over a year and there are many members which I may not know very well on a personal basis, but through the words and thoughts they have typed over the months I have come to better understand them. Is that not what a good community should strive to do? The hand private groups have helped give in this is tremendous. To say that Bungie has never been thanked is to admit that you have never read the forum links from the Weekly Updates. Thanks pretty much covers most of the replies.

And even coming back to XBL, I will admit in my time I have come across far too many players that I wish to never come across again. Alas through my time I have come to have people on my friends list that I would never have known in real life. Strangely enough after many months gone by we still play games together even if it is not Halo. I know I can't be the only person to say that.

If you can at least understand what I'm saying taken with all the negatives you have cited and still believe the community has gone for the worse, then your thoughts are beyond my comprehension.

WTF?! WHY would you did they to us?

You have a great point, and I realise now that the "bad apples" are probably drawn here the same way I was, this is Bungie's official site, so people not knowing of other forms of the community are drawn here to get their Halo input.

Alot of what I said was unwarrented and more than likely because of an arguement I was having with another member, who proceded to flame me and take the tone of our argument to a bad level merely because I disagreed with him..

It is true there are alot of good site, and now that I think about it... I am probably going to start one rather soon, I just need to bone up on my HTML skills for awhile.

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

As much as the forums frustrate me sometimes, there are many forums on the internet that are much worse. If we could improve the banning system (spammers are gone forever) and communication between ninja, most of the major problems would disappear. I know you guys will probably have trouble believing this, but a significant portion of the spam/aggressive flames are coming a fairly small group of people.

"I pledge to punch all switches, to never shoot where I could use grenades, to admit the existence of no level except Total Carnage, to never use caps lock as my "run" key, and to never, ever, leave a single BoB alive."

2B || !2B - Why don't you look Inside the Machine?

Well I agree with Ghandi. From what I've seen from other communities, this one does have some positives. I find that a small group or niche of people aimed to hurt a majority can and does impact it negatively.

Example:

Say you're baking a cake. Pick any flavor/style/etc. (I prefer chocolate). You've never really baked a cake before. However with your determination and insatiable appetite for cake you continue in your endeavor. You begin mixing, pouring, measuring, etc. WAIT! You need to use the restroom really quick. You rush out of the kitchen and down to the restroom. In the meanwhile your children (assume/pretend) come in. They begin to mess with the cake batter adding extra flour, salt, etc. They mix it up and leave with the intention of giving you a surprise. You bake the cake for the recommended time. You pull it out of the oven, let it cool, and then you go to taste it. You literally vomit from the taste of this cake.

Now let's put this into perspective. The cake is the community. The ingredients being the many different members. The Moderators are the measuring tools, they make sure that the members don't become so large that they throw the entire recipe out of balance. Now the children are the people who come here to add "extra" things that aren't needed for the community recipe. They just want to see the surprise of a ruined prize. With the help of Moderators they are silently dealt with so that they don't create an unbalance in the recipe.

Do I make any sense at all?

  • 03.02.2007 6:33 PM PDT

You say tomato; I say potato.

This site is not the community. It is a small part of he communty. The entire community consists of hundreds of fansites, large archives, and forums. Many of these produce very creative projects. Just read the front page of HBO.
