Tact is for those who aren't witty enough to be sarcastic.

No use cryin' over Spillt Milk

With all the recent 'ado' regarding bumps like 'IBTL' and the like, I've noticed that no one has mentioned the practice of one's reply consisting entirely of a quote and nothing more.

If you think about it, it makes more time and/or more keystrokes to copy, paste, and post someone's one-liner than it does to type your own version. If you simply have so little to say that you have to steal someone else's line, don't post.
This is even worse than most spam because it requires absolutely no creativity whatsoever and should be a blacklistable offense.
At least spam can be funny.

Now, someone will undoubtedly want to be cute and do it in this very thread. We all know it's coming so I'll even provide you with an easily quotable one-liner.

Idiots quote me please!

Some times some body already said what's on your mind. Well, if that's the case, just say "l agree" or add onto it. People quoting eachother is pretty dumb, if they don't have anything to say with it.

I have nothing against because it can reinforce a point

If someone made a H2H thread and someone replied saying:

'It's never coming back because of blah blah blah'

I might just quote that because it reinforces the point of the reply because now two people have said it instead of one, which might show the OP that the first reply was not just some idiot who has no idea what he is talking about.

I hope that makes sense becuse I re-read it and it was kinda of hard for even me to follow

It doesn't reinforce any point.
All it means is that you either mindlessly agree and have no thoughts of your own, or you were simply too lazy to voice your thoughts.
In either case you should avoid posting.

Well, my point was that if just one person said something in reply, the OP in my example might just say 'You're one person who doesnt know what he's talking about' where as if two or three quote the reply because it was accurate, the OP might be more inclined to believe it because more people are saying it is true.

I do see your points though about random quoting, I'm just posting what I have done a few times and it seems to get the point across better to the OP

It's common sense though, that if someone doesn't understand or is disbelieving, that simply repeating yourself is less effective than stating your point in another way or providing corroborating information.

Example:

You: What's a platypus?

Me: It's a Marsupial.

You: Uh...what?

Random poster: It's a Marsupial

You: Right, but...

You still have no better idea, and most likely, simply having it repeated to you has only frustrated you. Hopefully you won't be any more inclined to believe that a platypus is a marsupial.

I logged into Bungie.net and all I got was this lame member rank.

I agree, it is a tad annoying to see the same post 2-3 extra times with no extra contribution to the thread.

I still say its ok in certain situations, like the one I mentioned where no discussion is necesary because the answer is already known

I do see how it could be annoying in a large discussion thread though

All in all, I just dont see it as a bannable offense unless someone quotes themselves or someone else 50 times in a row

  • 03.01.2007 2:14 PM PDT

Everyone knows Shiv that the more people who repeat the same thing, the truer something becomes. For example:

So you're saying that it's ok to make a quote-only post if someone asks a question to which they already know the answer?

Only if the answer is something that is well known, but which the OP obviously doesnt know. Guess I should have made that clear

My example was someone posting a 'Bring back h2h' thread.

Most everyone knows why h2h removed and that it is not coming back. No discussion needed.

Someone posts the reasonings in a perfect fashion, I quote them to reinforce the fact that his explanation is correct. As weggie stated, the more people that say something, the more it seems true

Yes, he certainly had a point there...

Thanks for pointing that out.

Don't get too crazy, that's also how hundreds of people were led out into the wilderness and drank magical Kool Aid. Grape or Strawberry?

Personally I don't mind the quotes. Let's face it, some people just don't have anything to add. We can't all be spellbinding posters, holding the entire forum community in the palm of our hand with the beauty and wit of the written word.

Too much?

Actually, if it's a true opinion of the person, then I think it's fine. Example;
Poster 1: Do you guys like pie or cake?

Poster 2: I like pie.

Poster 3:
Poster 2: I like pie.

See? That's fine. It's not as if you could've said anything very different. Of course, if it's an answer, about a Platypus, for example, you can't just quote an uninformative answer.. That's silly.

Anyone who makes a thread asking people if they like cake or pie better needs to call Weggie and ask for some of that magic Kool-aid.

See, that's the point though. If they don't have anything to add, isn't it technically spam and/or bumping? Both of which are against the forum rules.
I don't see why they shouldn't be dealt with as such.

My thought on this: If you don't have anything to contribute, then don't even post. It's kind of like; "If you don't have anything good to say, then don't say anything at all."

Of course, those are just my thoughts.

I live by this, although many people take a different approach. Like certain people who post meaningless one-liners frequently without adding to the discussion. Or people whose post is so poorly worded that it's apparent they aren't actually saying anything.

Dear Daddy Weggie,

Things are rough out here in the public forums. I've tried to remember the advice that you and Momma Spilli gave me but I'm just not sure how
"Remember son, herpes = love, and never kiss a Vietnamese prostitute on the mouth." is supposed to help me.
Regardless, I'm finding more and more out here that people just like to piss and moan about stupid stuff for no reason. They complain about unforeseeable problems in the game, and they complain about inconsequential posting practices that are, at the very worst, slightly annoying.
It saddens me to say it, but I'm no longer the innocent little troll that you and mom sent out into the forums so many months ago. It's hard going out here, but I'm learning so much! I recently came into the knowledge that llama may soon be replacing chicken in many restaurant chains! Don't tell...but buy stock in llama.
I'll write again soon. Give my love to mom.

I hear ya shiv, and I've got two words for you...........alcohol & apathy. Technically that's three words if you count the ampersand, but I digress.

Don't focus on the negativity of Bungie, think of all the good things about B.net. There's..........yeah and................umm don't forget about..................sorry bad example.

Seriously, I come here to have fun and make people laugh. Who cares if there are people who constantly complain about every little infraction or want 50 different annoying phrases or words grounds for instant bannage.

Live. Love. Drink.
