I was just wondering about the groups on Bungie.net. I was wondering
1) How many groups are there?
2) How many have more than, say, 25 members?
3) How many of those groups of 25+ members have been active (forum posts/announcements) recently?

It just seems that when browsing groups or searching for groups I see a lot that either have moved to an external site or just plain don't get used.

Jeez. Ummm...I think we've long since reached the 100,000 mark. I dunno, maybe somewhere around 150,000 total?

2) How many have more than, say, 25 members?

To pull out a very random percentage, I would say somewhere around 70-85% have at least 25 members.

3) How many of those groups of 25+ members have been active (forum posts/announcements) recently?

I'm not quite sure what "active" means. Though if I had to guess on what I consider "active," I would say that of those groups, maybe 75% of them are active.

It just seems that when browsing groups or searching for groups I see a lot that either have moved to an external site or just plain don't get used.

Simple: Everyone wants to be known for having the most awesome group on Bungie.net. Which is why we have about a thousand groups that are made for "hanging out," a thousand for talk about Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, or any combination of the three, about a hundred that are about Halo 3 speculation (or at least there were), and the rest cover such a wide range of topics like "For discussing stuff" to "Having fun."

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Don't forget that there is one group dedicated to archiving and discussing community information and reviewing OTHER groups in order to help people make the tough decisions of which group to join.

I suppose it could be noted that there are a few groups that do break away from the mundane and/or overused group-creation-topics.

Chapter Founders is probably one. The Guide is one, or at least I think it is one. Ummm...Body Politic? The Black Chapter? So, like, four?

Five. I forgot about KOTOR.

Don't forget KOTOR is very different from other groups in the way it is run and the kind of people involved with it and it has member count of 630+ members and is very active when compared to other groups on B.net which dosn't hurt.

I think Mabian's numbers are an accurate guess. There are very few groups that are unique in their purpose and theme. The ones that are successful usually become that way because of their uniqueness or features that are somewhat "exclusive" to their group.

I suppose so. There are hardly any successful Star Wars themed groups, or even Star Wars groups themselves.

Mabey we should ask Frankie to bring up the list of all the groups. He did show us the list a long time ago, but I forgot how many there were.

edit: They might not be able to show us because of the work they are doing on the groups.

Mabey for next Weekly update Frankie might add the list of all the groups. He did show us the list a long time ago, but I forgot how many there were.

Or Achronos could add a Directory sorted in alphabetical order once the site is updated. It would take Frankie weeks to type up all of the groups unless he could copy them directly to the News.

That would be very helpful in getting members active once more after they apply the New New Hawtness and get groups back online and working again.

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

1. While a lot of groups have been created, most of them are abandoned fairly quickly. There are currently just under 7,000 active groups, the rest have been deleted for inactivity.
2. Less than 600.
3. Hard to say.

Another interesting statistic is that of all the active users on bungie.net, only about 6% of them are a member of a group. Hence, that's why groups are being shut off for a while we figure out how to make them more attractive and have purpose. Right now, the number of people who use them doesn't justify the time spent either maintaining them or developing new things for them. We're not ready to give up on them just yet, though.

Thanks for not giving up on our groups yet Achronos because their are few people like myself who enjoy them alot and can't wait until you make them as you say have be more attractive and have purpose.

Is there any estimate to how long they will be unavailable?

Also, for those looking for good groups to join, what about the possibility of listing those 600 or so groups that are a decent size?
