I read the manual, thought I'd mention that ahead of time.

Ok. I wanted to host my own server. I have 512k DSL which is good for about 5 people (that was my limit). So I get a game going. I asked a friend on xfire of he would join. He said yeah, and found my game, but said he couldn't connect.

I have no firewall, or anything to block the connection. I've also never had a problem connecting to other servers before, so where could the problem lie?

If you'd like a more specific description of the problem, I can give attempt to run the server again.

Thx in advance

Your friend probably had his ports all screwed up. If people can join your server, but one person can't, it's their fault. Ask your friend if he has a firewall blocking port access, and/or a router.

OR

if no one can join...try asking on the portforward.com forums or something. If nothing is blocking your access, I honestly don't know the solution...=/

He had a server going like 10 minutes before me that I was on, so I know that isn't the problem.

It probably is everyone since I've started it up 5 times before, waited 2 hours, and no one came.

have no firewall, or anything to block the connection. Windows has a built in firewall and if you are using ANY internet security program like Norton or McAfee then it too has a firewall. Also if you are using a router by default it performs NAT routing and acts like an inbound firewall and will block your ports.

How do you know if you are behind a router? easy: Open a command window and type: ipconfig [return]

If it reports that your IP number starts with either 192.168.X.X or or 10.10.X.X then you are on a private net and the router is translating the external IP to the internal IP for all outbound connections. When you want to host a game you need to tell the router to translate Inbound connections to your PC's IP number and ports. You can find help on configuring your router in your manual or at http://www.portforward.com. for information on what ports to dorward read:
I started a server and no one can join the game

That was the problem. I have to open some ports, but I am still not sure how to go about that. I am reading those sources as we speak to get r done.

I'll come back w/the results later.

Sorry for the double-post...

I heard disabling firewalls doesn't mean anything, so I opened up the ports that are needed to play halo. I only have Windows Firewall, that was disabled to avoid it blocking anything.

I can't find my router, a Speedtouch, listed there. I still don't see how to open the ports on the thing.

Please excuse my stupidity.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Do you have any kind of "control panel" for your router? If you have to use the router, the only way you're going to be able to host is if you can forward (let in) port number 2302 (UDP). I sure hope it allows you to do forwarding, otherwise you're out of luck. :/
