Every time I run Halo PC on Vista it freezes after a few minutes of running. When it freezes I can't do anything but restart the computer. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

Try closing any programs you see on your task bar, they eat up RAM. But until you post your specs I can't really help you.

EDIT - Gah! Same avatar! You must die!

You should've waited on Vista. Too many bugs and such.

Check to see if Windows Firewall is *attempting* to block it.

Nice specs, except for the fact you lack a CPU. I beg it doesn't turn out to be a processor from like the 1800's, which is basically a hamster running on a wheel to drive the thing...

I forgot that.
Processor: AMD Sempron 2800+, ~1.6 GHz
BTW I tried other games and they work like a dream. They don't freeze or anything.

I had a related problem on Windows XP with Halo PC. It turned out to be a bad power supply. Or the lack of power it had to turn the gears.

What is the wattage on that thing? If this does turn out to be a power supply problem, the I suggest you leave yourself alot of headroom for future upgrades.

How do I find out the wattage?

I doubt they would put a bad power supply in a manufactured PC. But it might just be dysfunctional. But i doubt it seeing this only starts when he loads up Halo PC. This is puzzling, if only we had a computer nerd who was as good with computers as Dr. House is with his diagnosis'.

I'll start it up again and see if it happens again.
Edit: I found the problem. Whenever I do something on Halo that I never did before like shooting a new weapon, one of my graphics drivers momentarily crashes and then recovers. The solution I found is to minimize(ALT+TAB) Halo and wait for it to recover then switch back to it.

Just because it was good when it went in, doesn't automatically mean that it will stay good for the lifespan of the rest of the PC. I've heard of a-many manufactured pc's having this problem, just like home built pc's can have.

Here's how I figure it. The people that sell you a power supply quality test it before you install it...the computer manufacturers that built this guy's pc did the same. What's the difference?

EDIT: Consider this half-full. Get the newest drivers, and if you already have them, re-download them and reinstall them and if that doesn't work, try the last known good drivers.

Well, take my advice I guess.

Another question. Are you using something like CoolBits, for example, to squeeze extra power out of your video card. Just curious. That caused lock-ups on my system when I pushed it too far. It was an instability thing.

No. This is a driver related problem. I diagnosed that whenever I use something in Halo that I never used before after installing it like shooting a needler for the first time, part of the graphics drivers crash momentarily then recover after minimizing Halo.

I know. Download and reinstall them. At this point I am sure it is a Vista issue (like when there was a pause whe Windows 2000 loaded 3D games).

Is there some other way? I don't feel like waiting for my PC to restart. It takes 3 minutes!

Most of the PC issues posted here are the result of PEBKAC.

Buy an new PC. Quit complaining, you should have dual booted XP.

It's a driver issue because nVidia has crap drivers right now. Just wait it out, and in a few weeks they'll have fixed them.

I wonder if the Wolf thinks the Moon listens when he howls at it.

Well alot of programs don't work at all with Windows Vista, im sorry but I really dont have a solution. Unless you have a P.O.C. PC then that is the only legit reason i have.

That's what compatibility mode is for. All the programs I had worked fine on Vista after reinstalling them.

You might want to get another hard drive though, 40GB is a little puny. I woudl recommend Seagate. Get one thats 100GB or more and make sure its less then $1.00 per GB.
