Hi all,
Why would my preamp/processor not recognize Halo 2 as a "Dolby Digital" audio source?
Upon launching Halo 2 for the first time, I was pleased with the intro movie's audio but immediately surprised by some gameplay audio anomalies, including near-absent low frequencies and underpowered sound effects, like weapons fire, etc. Suspecting a 5.1 audio problem, I inspected the pre/pro to find that it had misidentified the Xbox/Halo 2 as a mere "2-channel" audio source. [A fairly high-end unit, this Rotel pre/pro properly identifies Dolby Digital DVDs, satellite signals, etc. I don't suspect a problem with the pre/pro.]
I can manually force Dolby Prologic mode but this doesn't resolve the anomalies. I cannot force Dolby Digital. It's either there or it isn't.
I have tried both Xbox audio connections; the analog audio (RCA) ports and the digital audio (lightpipe) port. No change either way, even after power off/on.
What could I be doing wrong? I suspect that when I resolve the Dolby Digital detection problem, the missing low and center channel frequencies will be restored.
Any ideas?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
