Wow, I was really just looking to start a discussion of what new format, (if any) the new Bungie.net fourms should adopt.

So instead of just saying that you made an entire post that is somewhere in the range of 5000 words?

In any case, such a forum could/should be browsable/readable by all members, but I think that it would be a good idea to only allow posts and topic creation from members who have XBL-Gold accounts linked to their Bungie.Net member account.

Sounds like a bourgeois society based on class, I like it. We gold people spit on you silver animals. hrmphh! *snub*

Seriously though, I think this is a good idea. Having the members who actually have paid for a gold account, therefore having an impact on what is ultimately decided would cut down on spam.

Again with the non constructive comment spartakus? It appears you have a knack for purposefully misinterpreting semantics, while at the same time completly failing to address the topic of a thread. I would be angry, except you're merely proving my original point. I want a place where comments like yours, which serve only to agitate or otherwise distract from the conversation, are omitted. Making the thread more readable, and also friendlier.

So to answer your question, yes. Instead of just saying, "Hey guys let's talk about what form the Bungie.net forum should take." I decided to actually post an IDEA about HOW it should change. I'm sorry that the length of my post has somehow offended your delicate sensibilities, please feel free to not read any further.

or I could be testing Achronos' hypothesis that you assume a tone to my question that may or may not have been there, just because it fits into your stereotype of a bad post.

Although a good scientist tests a hypothesis more then once or twice as has been done here, it is obvious that your attitude won't change. So I believe that it is enough to come to the conclusion that your idea will not work on the basis of your stereotype of a bad post.

Your idea Phails™
good and constructive enough for you?

And my questions were valid.

So your conclusion is that my idea will not work because of what I think constitutes a good or bad post? Hmmm, for such a "scientific" approach you sure failed to look at all the evidence. If you read my original post closely, which BTW was my objection to your first response, you'll see that I suggest leaving that decision to the Ninjas. In fact, I believe my exact words were:

As for how to decide what content makes it onto the forum, I think that can be left to the Ninja. They've pretty much seen it all when it comes to discussion topics, so they ought to be able to discern between a quality, original post, and something that is re-hashed or worse, just plain nonsense.

And please don't hide behind Achronos' comment. Trying to act like you were testing if I had stereotypical views when all you posted was:

"How do you improve something that you have next to no information about?"

Clearly your arguement was related to the TITLE of the thread and not it's content. Achronos was addressing the fact that personal perspectives on the "quality" of comments prevent us from censoring the forums. I don't totally disagree, but feel that he misunderstood my orignal thought process, which I laid out clearly in my response.

I'm glad that you have finally decided to engage in conversation, rather than criticizing one line at a time. If you want to get into why I feel your comments are not constructive, it's really very simple. You are merely trying to prove me wrong, rather than supply an alternative solution. The forums can either stay the same, or change. I believe they should expand to include a more controlled environment. Whether that means restricting user access, as many have suggested, or some form of submission approval, as I have proposed, they are all valid ideas.

Your posts have included criticisms, but no real ideas. It's easy to sit back and say my idea will never work because I am making some kind of assumption about your tone, but that's really beside the point isn't it? I'm trying to make the forums a better place, or at least part of the forums. What's your plan?

O.k you want something that will improve the forums.

less control then your idea, but more then what we have right now. Your idea constitutes to much work from volunteers who come to this forum to have there own fun. Some people come here to get away from the stress and hard work of the day. Have them do more work defeats that purpose.

To get more control I suggest more moderators so that there can be more on at one time to watch the all of the forums more efficiently.

I'm certifiable.

I will say, right here and right now, that if I end up having to edit forum posts for content in order to implement somebody's idea of a better forum I'm banning everybody for a month and going back to bed.

That, or Achronos is going to have to renegotiate my fees up from the current "Webmaster's leftover tequila bottles" rate.

There are many ways to get things cleaned up. A flagging system to E-mail moderators isnt a bad idea and wouldnt create anymore work. On the contrary, it would make the job's of some ninja easier by linking them to the problem area immediately instead of them passing over it several times before noticing it.

But then again, we cant start flagging individual posts, that would be obsurd. Flagging topics is reasonable, but posts is not. Something to help out with the member problem could be a rep system only useable by moderators. Whenever a member begins to spam or do wrong, you click the Warn Member button. This would add to their -rep and would be displayed on the forums. This would allow moderators an easier tracking system for problematic members, and allow those members to see the reapings of what they sow.

Here's another thing I would do..........let the ninja's do their job. Most of them are actually bright, intelligent people

Wait, are we talking about our ninjas?

*chuckles and snickers*

Oh boy, candy!

Anyway and on topic. I've said this before and I will say it again.

Spam, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. What one person considers a non-valuable or unimportant topic is likely a well-considered and labor of love to the member who created it.

With some notable exceptions, most members do not come onto this site with the specific intent to spam. Even the "kick Arby in the nuts?" posts, have (at least to some) a measure of importance and value. The diversity and size of our membership makes it impossible to avoid that reality.

Another example? http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=2714423

Spam to some, interesting conversation to others. I try to take the Gandalf method when it comes to labeling a thread as "good" or "bad".

Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise can not see all ends.

Nice LOTR quote. Good point. We shouldn't be too eager to censor people.

No, that's ok. I stand by what I said. I'm not going to propose any "improvements" to a system that I have no knowledge of. That's dumb, if you ask me.

How about we change it from "Improving the NEW HAWTNESS" to "Suggestions for the NEW HOTNESS"? Is it really that different how its called?

Recon, I like you idea of what is close to a "white list" and I think it would cut spamming ten-fold. However, not everyone wants their GamerTag visible to the general rabble and so I think there should be an option to hide it though it's still linked. Sure, people will know they have Xbox Live as they can post and there isn't a GamerTag there, and I don't think that would have any effect on the system at all.

You idea is, well, unfeasible. Plus it would encourage sever censorship, which would not be cool. Or productive.

How would you feel, if [censored] happened, and [censored], while [censored], and [censored]? And furthermore, [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored].
