Tact is for those who aren't witty enough to be sarcastic.

No use cryin' over Spillt Milk

With the rash of spam threads lately, and the subsequent retaliation in the form of complaint threads here, it's apparent to me that a change is in order.

So many people make threads along the lines of; "how can I link my gamertag, what is MLG, why are shiv and Poc so damn cool, what is superbouncing, is it cheating, why is my wee wee so small?"
Moving on...
Perhaps the problem is that new users are so overwhelmed with the forums, their minds so filled with questions, that they forget to take the time to read the stickies and the other threads of importance. Hell, they probably don't even notice the search feature..
Here's the plan.
New members should not be allowed to post for a month after joining.
This will help the forums in a couple ways.
Firstly, if they were just going to spam, then they won't be willing to wait a month to do so. Secondly, having a month to read the forums without the distraction/temptation of posting will allow them to familiarize themselves with the common practices of the forum and when their month is up, they'll be properly socialized.
Thoughts?

Why the hell are you looking at this? Get out.

And no group invites, you jerk. I'm not interested.

No, no. A month is way too long.

How 'bout one day of not being able to post, and possibly three days not being able to make a new thread? Let's move slowly on this.

  • 03.07.2007 2:47 PM PDT

I vote a week for not being able to post and create new topics.

Well if they couldn't post for a whole month, then they would have no reason to come here. I personally dislike this idea. The max a new member could no post upon arrive on Bungie.net should be at least a day or twelve hours.

I like that idea. You could even move the thread creation up to five days.

But a month? No.

The whole point of this 'lurking' period is the serve as a spam deterrent while simultaneously allowing users to become familiar with the way the forum works.

Having then only wait a day to post is no deterrent whatsoever.
However, having heard your cries, I think that the 'waiting period' should exist only for the public forums and not for the private groups. Group creators should be able to impose such restrictions if they see fit, but they would not be mandatory.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

A few days might help reduce spam in some way, but my experience is that the vast majority of useless posts are generated by people who've been around awhile. Don't you think so?

i agree, but a month may be too long. one week for posting and 2 weeks for topics sounds good.

  • 03.07.2007 3:04 PM PDT

In any case, it should be at least 48hrs of being signed in to post.

These are all bad ideas. Even 24 hours is almost too long a time to wait. (But It's necessary) Especially when you have an idea you want to get out. I mean, look, Shiv's been here for a long time, and his idea is a silly one.

People will act almost the same, regardless of how long you make them wait. The only end result of such a 'postponing of posting abilities' is they'll come out angrier.

Useless posts, perhaps. (Zag, up there, is a shining example, calling me out for no reason)
Useless threads, no. They're almost always made by new members that are asking stupid questions, or old users posting on alt accounts. Both problems would be solved by making them wait to post.
A month may seem extreme, but it won't deter any truly interested user, especially when they can still interact freely in the groups.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I get what your saying but a month is way to long.

People will make accounts and then lose interest.

If they lose interest in only a month even though they can still post freely in groups, I've venture to say that the community is better off without them.

Not at all. I'm merely pointing out that your logic is "All the bad posts are from short-term members". This isn't true. If you're more considerate of others, you wouldn't suggest something as outrageous as a month-long wait.

A month may seem extreme, but it won't deter any truly interested user, especially when they can still interact freely in the groups.

Most of the users on this forum, which if were gone this forum would get rather boring, aren't 'interested users'. Even most of us who started out here didn't expect to be as involved as we are now, myself included. They just want to talk about some stuff, and go. To them, a forum is just somewhere to share some ideas, for an hour or so. They don't want to wait a month, or even 2 days to post.

Whereas with others, they constantly hang out in groups and post on and off all day.

Precisely, and they can continue to interact in groups unhindered by the new precautions.
Perhaps the amount of time as a user in order to post should be shortened, but I still hold that new membership should require a month before they can post their own threads.

No, no, absolutely, no.

It'd kill this website, and then stomp on its corpse. It'd just end up with a couple of people who just refuse to leave (like me), with no fresh meat. The only way you could make people stay through that kind of anti-spam period is if we had a legendary community with no problems, and lets face it, we're a scum-ridden cesspit, so that ain't happening.

Controlling fission events without incident since May, 2012.

As Eagles said, a month is way too damn long to be able to post. I'd have left and forgotten about Bungie.net in that time frame, would you say I'm a waste to this community? One Day to post, a week to make a thread. Maximum.

Having an automatic PM sent to a new member with links to forum rules and the like would be much more useful. Just telling them they can't interact at all would anger them, possibly to the point of negatively looking upon Bungie.net

It's a curse really.

While I like the idea of a waiting period for new members, I don't think the person waiting to post would bother learning about the forum rules, reading stickies, etc.

The main reason I'd like a waiting period is for the retards who get blacklisted coming back for a little spam-revenge on the forums. If new members had to wait, they BL'd member wouldn't be able to make alternate accounts and continue to inflict their taint upon us.
