Well, I really have no money of my own and my birthday is too far off. And it's not like I would be recieving a pair of 8800GTXs then either =P

I want to get an 8800GTS but I have no job, so I was thinking of getting the cheaper G80 card, the nVidia 8600 Ultra. This card is only $180.

8600 Ultra: 64 SP, core 500 MHz, memory 1400 MHz, 512 MB, 256-bit, $179
8600 GT: 48 SP, core 350 MHz, memory 1200 MHz, 256 MB, 128-bit, $149
8300 GT: 32 SP, core 500 MHz, memory 1200 MHz, 256 MB, 128-bit, $99
8300 GS: 24 SP, core 500 MHz, memory 1000 MHz, 256 MB, 128-bit, $79

How much performance do you think I could squeeze out of Halo 2 Vista? Howsabout Crysis? This card, though midrange, has DX10 as well, correct?

I'll probably have to upgrade my case and PSU as well, and I hope my standard HP motherboard will fit into it, lol....

Firstly, if it has "HP" in the name, you got ripped off, and screwed over, distance yourself from such hardware as soon as possible.

Secondly, get a job, as your honestly never going to get anything good for free or near free.

It's a better investment to save up and go big, than spend some now, then waste money upgrading as you go, I spent about $1800 on my DELL (I was one of the lucky ones, do not get a DELL, ever) and it lasted me 5 years before being outdone by the latest games. I reccomend getting a system between $2000 and $2500, that's just the tower mind you, and you will be good for the next 5 years or so from when you buy it, thats only 500 bucks a year essentially, and that's not taking into account the fact you might not have to entirely replace everything in it, or get top of the line parts again, someone who makes a comp 6 months from now will be able to get a GeForce 8800 GTX at half the price that they are selling for today, and will still be more than enough for games that come out for the next two years.

That's my plan, I'm just going to upgrade my wife's graphics card, and then when it comes time to get my new machine, I will get 6 month old components for fractions of the cost, depends on the development curve of processors etc. of course, I may well go for new anyway, vista will have been out for a while and I anticipate quad core processors will have dropped in price by a fair bit, and I hope 8 core processors will be out by fall to push the price even lower.

And you would have to check nvidia's site about DX10, I think that's a 8800 feature.

Ok, seriously, no HP, Emachines, Gateway, Dell or any crap like that, you are getting screwed over. When I get back, I will make a video guide on how to build a computer. i aggree that you should go for the 8600 Ultra, seems fine to me, and you should definately get some good stuff out of H2V, can't guarentee Crysis at all, seeing as no details on system requirements have been truthfully given, other then most demonstrations were on an 8800.

Edit: where the hell did you find out about the 8600?

Look... I'm on bungiepedia!

I just googled "nvidia 8600 ultra" and I read the link on 3dguru (or something).

I know, I wanted to make my PC but my parents really bought this as a family one and wanted to get a cheaper one. It was 900 with a nice monitor =\

I'll try to salvage what I can from this though, it came with 2 gigs of RAM and a nice 250GB HDD =)

Yeah, for the frightened people cowering at the big powerhouse brand names, grow up and learn how to shop correctly. I'm sporting a Dual Core AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+, 2GB RAM, 260GB HD, DVD/CD-R/CD-RW/Lightscribe drive; all of which came standard with the HP tower. Guess how much the tower was? $700. Guess how I managed that? Oh, yeah; I'm a smart consumer. The only downside was a graphics card and hell, with two PCI-E slots, well...you know the rest. I drop $200 for a X1900, another $100 for the Acer 640WT PSU, and I am now the proud owner of a computer that can run Oblivion 1280x1024 max settings with around 40 - 70 FPS. So take heed my fellow MAWers; if you know what the hell you are doing then you cannot go wrong.

Dells do suck though. : P

Oh, and as everyone else said, get a job.

Ignore the kids about the HP mobo's being bad for you. They're bad for high end gaming/overclocking, but they get the job done. If you're looking at a budget card, an 8600 will be great for you. Be sure to get a 256-bit memory bus. The 128-bit ones aren't worth the money at all.

Their bad period, their BIOS is crap, it runs slower than spec unless you have it in the damned freezer, and the drivers are a joke, if your a casual gamer then yea, won't matter as your not looking to play any new games on high settings obviously, but this guy want's to play Crysis, so duh, he needs something better than an HP, your going to have to go name brand to get quality for your money, Asus has a good lineup of Intel and AMD boards, and I know their well worth the money, if your going to overclock or not, and in any case, they make overclocking easy, so you can get a lower end board and clock it up, saves you money without sacraficing too much power.

But it all depends on how tech savvy the OP is. My boss and I get DELL's and HP's in here all the time, and compared to our lesser self builds, they are slow and buggy, so it's up to him.

I work at HP. I suggest that no-one ever buy anything that's PC (ie, direct PC hardware or an assembled PC) related that's made by HP. HP's brilliance is in peripherals; printers and some cameras. HP makes quality printers.

Even then, I have a hard time recommending anything HP anymore, with what I know of internal policies and practices.

Again, I do not recommend anything that is directly PC related that has an HP logo on it (Optical drives, hard-drives (if you can even find them anymore), mobos, etc).

Hardware-wise, the Dells will preform on par as any other machine within normal yield tolerances. Software preformance problems stem from the crap they put on that runs in the background. Simply remove it and you're fine.

Lack of capabilities?

Did you just say that?

Make a custom Halo XBox map on your 360, then talk about lack of capabilities.

There is nothing the XBox 360 can do that the PC can not do better. And for your information, how much did you spend on the PC that your using to surf this very forum? That 500 bucks you spent on a 360 could have made your PC better than a 360, but no, you wanted that paperweight. I have played Gears of War and Halo 2 on XBox, and they suck, ass, they would be infinetly better on the PC where skill has more to do with how fast your able to react to seeing an enemy and less to do with how well you are able to handle two joysticks at once, Halo 2 is only playable because of autoassist.

The freedom of a computer relative to a joystick is well worth it.

We don't hate the Xbox per se. Rather, we prefer PCs over them. I am a proud owner of an Xbox 360, and I love it. But computers trump consoles in nearly every single perspective.

PC technology is very advanced compared to that of the consoles. In terms of processing power, they offer better visuals and performance. Not only that, computers have the flexibility consoles can't offer. Can you take apart your 360 and upgrade it to improve its performance? I didn't think so.

The mouse and keyboard also makes the PC the only platform where one can enjoy some exclusive genres of games, such as (MMO)RPGs and RTS. Let's face it, most console RTS titles suck, and they don't have RPGs like PC gamers do. Even for first-person shooters, the mouse and keyboard is much more accurate, precise, and responsive than the controller. Plus, there are many games you wouldn't find on the consoles, or franchises that don't work as well as they do on the PC.

By the way, not all PC gamers think consoles is the devil. Don't generalize us this way. It's not right. We don't all hate them.

Duh. It's not that hard.

Think of computer building like lego sets. Everything fits together nicely, and it's very easy if you follow instructions.
