News? Podcasts? Machinima? Active forums? Competitions? Jaffa Cakes!? OMG!
Thee Warriors!

Best. Mod. Ever.

On a slightly more serious note, it's not just the moderator's actions but their presence. When people know they are there they are less likely to offend in the first place.
Oh, and another great example of a spam thread: "Shishka is a pegboy".

You want to know what it'd be like to have no moderators on this site? Try this easy to prepare simulation.

Step 1: Procure yourself an intact box, something a fridge or similarly large appliance.

Step 2: Fill cardboard box halfway with feral cats. One or two should be rabid.

Step 3: Climb inside the box, closing the top behind you.

Step 4: Begin screaming and thrashing wildly at the cats.

The reason why it's called a "community" is because there are many people from many different walks of life. Not all of them are going to be civil. Many of them will be -blam!-s. Some people won't even be from the community; there are always trolls that find forums for the sake of frustrating other users. The suggestion that the forum should be allowed to go to hell just because there are troublesome people in the community has got to be the worst suggestion I've ever heard made for this site, ever.

LOL
Like I said before the mods should stay especially now when there is a console war going on. There are some Sony and Nintendo fans that just hate Microsoft. So they start spamming their forums. Where to they come to spam? The site for the best series Microsoft has.

Moderators help maintain the forums and keep it spam-free, but in the end, isn't the need of moderators a sign of weakness in the community? Since some members are not mature enough to obey the rules, the community's level of maturity is diminished, and the community is less worthy of existence. Therefore, I am proposing that moderators be done away with on Bungie.net. This will be a test for the forums. If the members go crazy and the forums fall into chaos, then Bungie.net is unworthy of existence, and it should be allowed to be consumed by its unworthy members. If the community is worthy of existence, then the community will continue on functioning with minimal problems.

HALO 2 will rule 4ever. It is Halo and it is enougth. Thanks Bungie, our life will never be the same.

I still remember when B.net had only 3 or 4 moderators. When this new foruns started I think i only can remember Shishka from that time, and he isnt moderator now.

My account is older than a a lot of moderators here, but I was never n active member, read a lot before Halo 2 wents out but i rarely posted cuz my english was bad (it's still bad). This idea could work in the begining when the people were more mature than they are now, at least I didnt see so many immature people as now. I left B.net after the realise of Halo 2 cuz it only had spammers, and lame people, but now it is better than it was at that time, but not so good as it was before Halo 2. I remember everyday i could read a solid a good theory about Halo, it was a fantastic forum.

After all this text I only want to say it would be a bad idea have no moderator on B.net.

Brilliant idea. We get rid of the mods, watch the forums implode, and we get to see the end of the existence of Bungie.net. Think about it, we'll have all these great memories down the road about how Bungie.net went into a state of anarchy and we'll be sure to laugh about it.

Remember, the answer to almost any question is the balance between two extremes. In this case, the two extremes are "lots of heavy handed moderation" and "nothing" - the answer is "a few trusted individuals to step in where necessary".

I have never understood why the concept of "balance" is such a difficult thing to understand. People misuse the word all the time.

Fix't.

Really though. No moderators? I would've used a better analogy than Shishka, perhaps something along the lines of an unstable mine-shaft, and the moderators are the support beams... Therefore removing them would collapse the entire mineshaft that is Bungie.net, slowly letting us die due to lack of oxygen and or dust-turned-deadly-projectile.

But a box of cats? I couldn't have come up with something that clever.

You say tomato; I say potato.

I find it hard to believe that anyone could fail to see the need for moderators.

No. There should be mods. We don't need every thread to be a spam thread.

So what you're saying is that a website should not exist if it cannot maintain a community?

You know, there are actually many game developers who don't have forums for whatever reasons. However, Bungie in their infinite wisdom set out to harness the power of a community. Now, i don't think anyone would seriously say that this is a perfect community but that is why we have moderators; to make sure rules are upheld and the forums become a nice, orderly place to visit and participate in.

  • 03.14.2007 3:52 PM PDT

Without Moderators on the forums, the forums would turn into xbox live.

This idea fails for obvious reasons.

One being this simple fact: One of the very few things this world will never be short on is stupid people. More of them spawn daily, and they represent a frightening percantage of the world's population.

And to go along with the previous is the amplifier called anonymity from being on the internet. Stupidity is exponentially multiplied by the state of being anonymous. Simply because stupid people can say stupid things without fear of any real consequence.

Stupidty is a given. It's always been there, and always will be. No matter what group of people, no matter where, no matter when. Until the end of days.

Now take away the small consequences and manangment tools we DO have versus aforementioned stupid people, and you just end up with rampant chaos and stupidity that consumes any worthwhile fan's input.

This idea actually catches me off guard, because normally Milkie has such interesting threads and good ideas. Perhaps Milkie was drunk at the time.

Hmmm... pondering this. Should that day arise anytime soon I propose that the festering amounts of bitterness, stupidity and ignorance would coalesce and the embodiment of that putrid material will bring rise to the being Cthulhu.
And he will wroth fire and undo the existence that brought him in to being so the universe will finally achieve peace.

So no, pretty bad idea.

It would be like firing all the firemen in a village in the hope that people will take fire safety more seriously.

Then the arsenists would creep in and the village would burn to a crisp.

edit: "carefully" was the wrong word...
