I think people on this forum need to stop focusing on moderating, period. In my mind, the moderation is already TOO noticeable, if you will. The white text segregating them from the rest of the members is a way to get them tracked, stalked, quoted, and mostly, it makes it harder for them to honestly contribute to a conversation. However, that may not change; what should change is the mentality on this forum of "Do I want/not want to be a moderator?" Why do people even ask that question, period? I'm too busy being a member to think about being a moderator - when I do see them post, I tend to think of moderators more as "senior (generally sarcastic ;P) members," whose opinion, while no more important than anyone elses, may be closer to the mark than, say, a 3 day old member. Don't get me wrong - they're, of course, in no way infallible, and that 3 day old member may be more "right" than the ninja.
Again, I want to stress how important it is for the sake of the community for people to stop worrying about moderating and start being members; contribute! Don't just forum cop, troll, brown nose, what have you. Don't post small, incoherent, detrimental posts (hell, I wish there was a rule against that) - posts are like small essays - they need a general thesis! If you aren't going to contribute in your post, ask yourself - "Why am I posting? Is this going to help the conversation?" If it's not, then just don't post. It's that easy.
Then again, unfortunately, the kind of people that need to ask themselves those questions, in general, won't. Ah, such is life. =/
