Subject: Bungie.net Charity Drive

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

I know, intense idea.

In essence, I was thinking we could organize a charity drive through Bungie.net. We get some news up on the front page and some person (or persons) at Bungie could be responsible for collecting the money and sending it to the desired charity. Could this work? I see no reason why Bungie wouldn't be 100% for the idea, seeing as they get good publicity, their fans get good publicity and gamers everywhere get a better reputation, increasing their potential market.

As you can see, the project is still very much in the conceptual phase. And ideas?

(Please note: Nothing here is certain. It's an idea. Help is appreciated tons, and criticism is appreciated even more.)

And no group invites, you jerk. I'm not interested.

A charity drive... through Bungie.net? That just sounds crazy.

I don't think that it's necessarily a bad idea, but there are organizations and foundations out there that are better suited for charity work.

Why do you think that? That might be a place to start.

On the point of there being better places suited for this, I'm inclined to disagree. The people in this forum have the money to spend on games and consoles, maning they can donate a few bucks. The problem I see is the age of the average forum member. Even then, however, if Bungie supports this idea I have no doubt we can raise a significant heap of cash.

Not only that, but I like it here. :(

The people on this forum a generally... not that smart. There are peoples who are intelligent here, but they're outnumbered.

Those people may have plenty of money, but something like paypal not where they have it (if you planned on using online). They also probably aren't very charitable. In my opinion, they'd probably just go "pfft, yeah right".

I'll sell you mine. Actually, Pinky, I think this is a good idea, but the pain might be in the details. How would we insure that the money is taken care of effectively. How would a regular person go about collecting the money, other than just saying "please send cash or check to BerserkerBarage". Actually, that doesn't sound too bad, everyone send cash or checks to BerserkerBarage right meow O.o

See what I mean? Trying to get everything ironed out so it would be fair and on the up and up could prove rather problematic.

Probably not my size.

If Bungie managed it, like they did after katrina, it could work. Otherwise? no.

Bungie.net does not require charity for itself if you mean it like that. Bungie has come a long way from just one person and it doesn't require money donations and what not.

gnome13 got jokez. :D

This idea is crazy, but it just might work. One of the main obstacles to overcome is the laziness of the average forum-goer vs. the relative difficulty of donating online. You could try offsetting the laziness by the impulsiveness, I suppose: "For today only, send $2 by Paypal to be included as a character in a short play Frankie will make up off the top of his head for the WWU next week! Come on, more people who donate, more Frankie has to use his brain! Proceeds go to Child's Play (etc. etc.) so there's no reason not to!"

Basically make them random, sporadic things that people don't have time to put off and will attract the average forum-goer. Maybe...

"Charity Humpday! We'll be playing an internal H3 humpday tomorrow, 8 highest donations get their names used as characters! Dazzle your friends by being in a PGCR on High Ground."

Random, little stuff. Doesn't involve any long attention spans, attracts random H3 fanatics, no postage required. The above examples are just that, examples. Also, they're not very good. ;]

Bungie's already done this with the Fight The Flood T-Shirts..

Also, that one foundation.. Which I now forget what it's called, has been on the Bungie.net front page multiple times. Child's Play, wasn't it?

Of course, it's not like you can't have too much charity.. :P

It's one of those ideas that works well in theory, but the forums aren't made up of people with money that have the means to give.
Don't get me wrong, alot of people can donate, but there is a big majority that just doesn't have the means.
Of course, it hasn't stopped the past charity organizations, so you never know.

I'd be sooooooo down with that.
Something cheap, like a community t-shirt, made from a contest within. Vote for best design. Man, anything positive sounds great. I'd buy something for sure if it was a community effort.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Remember a few weeks ago when they had that big auction on eBay about getting a voice cameo in Halo 3 if you made the largest charitable donation? I even submitted a couple of bids for that auction - at around the $1250 mark. The cameo eventually sold for over $7000, showing that some members of the Bungie Community are willing to pay huge sums of money for the opportunity to be involved in Halo 3.

Stuff like that would be a GREAT way for Bungie to do even more charity work, if it felt so inclined. And it looks like they already have set such things in motion with the eBay auctions and similar projects.

Everybody is so down on the Community's desire or ability to donate money, but I actually really like this charity idea. I just think that the Community is much more likely to respond if they GET something in return. This would require Bungie's cooperation, but I think it could work. How about these ideas for a charity drive in connection with Halo 3?* $20 Donation -

Your name or your gamertag is displayed in a list of similar donors in the credits at the end of Halo 3 (after all of the real credits).

I think lots of people would pay $20 to have their name in the credits of Halo 3.... It is a very small but cool reward for an affordable donation. I know I would!

* $100 Donation - Name in the credits of Halo 3 as above PLUS:

A special marker next to or under your gamertag in XBox Live Halo 3 matchmaking (similar to the way "Bungie.net" appears under your gamertag now, but something cooler). Maybe the marker could be the words "Bungie.net" in a different color.

* $500 Donation - Name in the credits of Halo 3, the special marker next to or under your gamertag, PLUS:

Your name or gamertag spray painted or carved in grafitti somewhere in Halo 3's scenery. It would be in an obscure place and would fit in with the scenery, but it would be sweet. I think I'd go for this.

* $3000 Donation - Name in the credits of Halo 3, the special marker next to or under your gamertag, your name or gamertag spray-painted or carved in grafitti somewhere in Halo 3's scenery, PLUS:

Voice cameo in Halo 3 as background Marine dialogue.

* $8000 Donation - Name in the credits of Halo 3, the special marker next to or under your gamertag, your name or gamertag spray-painted or carved in graffiti somewhere in Halo 3's scenery, PLUS:

A Marine is modeled after you, including your face and voice.

This would have to be tweaked somewhat, but I just quickly typed this up as a jumping-off point. Anybody have any ideas on this?

  • 03.16.2007 7:33 AM PDT

You say tomato; I say potato.

What will all of these things be helping? The money has to go somewhere.

Besides, people were willing to pay ~$15 for a t-shirt. I don't think Bungie will be so loose about their Halo 3 credits either.

Your reward system is a bit...wierd. Why so many levels? I'm thinkin $15 for a bungie t-shirt, $25 for a t-shirt with your Halo 2 emblem on it, and $35 for a jersey with your gamertag on it.

I dunno, take your pick of charities. I was merely talking about a reward system to elicit donations, since people around here only seem to be willing to fork over cash when they get something tangible in return.

Besides, people were willing to pay ~$15 for a t-shirt. I don't think Bungie will be so loose about their Halo 3 credits either.

Why not? They allowed a random person on the internet to buy a voice cameo in Halo 3. Why wouldn't they allow this?

I don't see how it's weird. The different levels are for more desireable rewards based on larger donations. The more money you donate, the better reward you get.

Sorry - I should have prefaced my first post with a little notation that I dated a girl for four years who worked for a non-profit organization. Despite her many faults, she was extremely good at getting donations. The one thing she hated most was "T-Shirt" drives. These days, people expect to get t-shirts for free in most instances. T-Shirt drives -- even when the T-Shirt is cool -- are inevitably failures.

Sure, a charity t-shirt drive might sell one or two thousand T-Shirts. But printing t-shirts costs money, and the net gain on any t-shirt would only be a few bucks after you consider the other costs involved.

But I'd bet my life that MY idea, no matter what the charity, would net hundreds of thousands of dollars for a great cause. I can say this with confidence for a couple of reasons:

1) Extremely low cost for the rewards. Really, the costs are sunk anyway because Bungie is paying their employees regardless of whether they do this or not.

2) Unique, affordable rewards. Some people can't stand the thought of having YET ANOTHER t-shirt. But come on, who wouldn't want their name in the credits of Halo 3 for twenty bucks? Especially when all of their friends do it? I can come up with twenty bucks just searching through all the crap in my apartment.

So why do you think that the idea is "weird"?

  • 03.16.2007 8:34 AM PDT

I really don't see why a piece or a couple pieces of paper couldn't be included in the Legendary Helmet with the name of folks willing to donate to some project. But they seems to stir up an argument about Me-Me-Me. Maybe it's better that we did something more based off all us as a family and not make it about our names at all.

We are faceless are we not ? "I am Spartan117"

Brilliant, except Halo 3 is a bit late in development for the $3k and $8k options, and the $100 option seems a bit rubbish.
How about, instead of the tag for the $100, open up 49 custom emblems for Halo 3, available to the highest bidders, one per entrant, hand made by the art department and signed by Frankie and Achronos. These could fetch well over $1000 each. Scratch the $3k and $8k prizes, as this is a charity aimed at gamers, not kids with rich parents.

There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

Here's my idea for what we could do, and the reason behind it would be a rather simple one. I would suggest doing "bumper-stickers". Why? Because they are relatively cheap to produce, they are easily shipped, and you can customize them rather easily. How easily one might ask? Well, this took me about 38 seconds to do:

Foman's my guniea pig

See what I mean? We could do some custom ones for a little more, or just do some regular I <3 Bungie ones. I have tons and tons of possible ones, but I figured it would be fun to have. You don't even have to sick them on a car. Stick them on a folder if you're in high school. Have that Bungie pride (nerdiness) flashin' to all your homeroom buddies!!

That's just my idea. It can be easily done, and shipping wouldn't cost anything. Let me know what you think! Sorry Pinky if you think I'm trying to hijack your idea, that is not my intention.

I love it!!! SIGGED!

As for my idea, I agree with Dalmedya's modifications. The higher-end stuff might indeed be a bit too late to implement and it does kind of seem a bit too geared towards either ultra-rich gamers with nothing better to spend their money on or kids with ultra-rich parents looking for a sweet tax deduction.

And you're right - the $100 "reward" was crap! I like your idea for the custom player emblems better.
