Who would chose the target charity?
Based on my historical observation of Bungie and the community, that can sometimes be the most difficult part of any charitable event. Because no matter the choice, no matter how noble, or worthy, the selection is going to tick off someone (usually a lot of someones) who consider the choice to be improper, personally motivated, or discriminatory.
An example would be the selfless and successful, "Fight the Flood!" event that occurred on this site even as dedicated relief organizations and governments were still ramping up their response.
A good thing, right? Sadly, not to everyone. My fellow ninja and I, along with Bungie employees spent a lot of time removing (the people and posts) that were undermining and belittling others for participating. All because (to the naysayers) this particular charity was getting more attention than their favorite.
Seriously. People were asking, "Why so much about New Orleans now and there was silence after the Sri Lankan tsunami?" fyi, at the time of that tragedy, the community did have threads advising what relief organizations were legit, which ones were not, and asking our community to please assist in any ways that they could.
Recon, I think you're just looking for people to donate money to you, aren't you? I see your plan. That would be a cool shirt, though;
"I saved Recon from being excluded!"

Anyway. That (to me) is the potential rub of almost any corporate or community charity. The good will and positive motivation can be tarnished by the negativity of others.
Aren't you almost doing that right now, in a way? I'd have to agree with you, as you always seem to analyze situations like that better than I do, but the negativity of a few others shouldn't prevent people from helping out a worth cause, even if it isn't the so-called 'right' one. That's like saying we shouldn't have certain features in games because a minority of people didn't like it. (Ok, that's a decent anology)
I mean, I know I bought the "Fight the Flood" shirt;
A) For the shirt, that was some sweetness
B) To help out. I probably wouldn't have bought that shirt if I didn't find it so clever. It was great to know a nice portion of the money went to a good cause.
Now, I understand, Recon, you're not some soulless "Charity sucks!" kind of guy, but it seems to me you're saying something along the lines of "Let's not help some, because that would exclude people, so let's help none."
Or I could've missed your point entirely.
I'm hesitant hitting this submit button.
