I mentioned my opinion in another thread, but I see the signatures as somewhat of a "mini-profile" in which a member can post a tidbit of information about themselves if they so choose. I think I may try that in the near future (when I'm not lazy).

Yeah that's what I thought also, and as far as I can see "sigging" people is not as effective anymore.

Jeremiah's idea could be nice for people who still want the old signatures but I don't know how easy that would be to implement, and like underdog said if people start changing their signatures to better reflect the new placement it would look awkward with the old one.

I liked the place sigs were before. Most of the time. I didn't like the large ones and the ones with stupid things in them, however, as I see it , a signature is there for you to say something at the end of every post, not a mini profile that someone has to go look for like it is now. Something right there. Something you want to say to everyone. Its almost an advertisement for and about yourself that helps identify you.

My suggestion would be to limit the signatures to one maybe two lines, not by characters because a character limit does not necessarily limit the size of the sig, and a character limit can make it hard to put multiple links in, so it won't be very distracting because it is small. Images would be nice too, but I doubt that will ever change for a multitude of good reasons.

Signatures are staying the way they are now. If you don't like it... well, tough.

As for the size, everyone's signature space is a fixed size (I don't remember the exact height). If you exceed that (even if you are under the character limit for a signature), it will get cut off. That is by design.

I hate the new place for it, but if it's stuck there atleast make it the right -blam!- size!

Live life the way you want to...

I voted No.

I usually liked looking at people's signatures to find useful links or groups to join.

It would be good if it showed the entire signature, instead of cutting the bottom off. If you could fix that one bit I will be happy.

EDIT:

Ah, I didn't read everything.

I don't like how it extends outwards hugely to cover much of the post space: I'd rather it expanded downwards. =P

I'm not really fond of where the sigs are now, why not put them below our avatar or in the new 'gray box'.

  • 03.20.2007 1:37 PM PDT

Quick as a razor, sharp as a bullet.

It looks cleaner and more efficient like this, but with the old way, you could instantly see what was in someone's sig. You could have lots of fun for a few seconds just looking at sigs. Now you have to draaaag your mouse over said sig. I am lazy, in case you hadn't noticed. Anyway, I also noticed that someone's sig does not fit into the sig box, and there isn't any way to enlarge it. Unless there is and I just don't know. Please tell me.

Because you don't really learn how to swear until you learn how to drive.

Well, I dont really think it constitutes as signature anymore, in my opinon a signature is a trait or something memorable that is always at the end of someones post (hmmm that dosent make as much sense typed out as it did in my head...), but yea its more or less of a quote now versus a sig, if anyone gets my reasoning...now I do have to agree, some peoples sig's were eye sores and quite annoying at times. So while I perfer the old style, I can take good and bad from this =)

Get Marathon 2 and Infinity Here

But darn it, some people's posts deserve sigging...thought I love the whole limited height, but same char count, lets people have links etc but not make an overly large sig, which was and would be more annoying now.

It's been mentioned a few times, but yes, "sigging" shouldn't be the problem that it was. If people do decide to still sig eachother at least I (or anyone else) don't have to see it anymore. The small limit is a good thing, too. If anyone wants to use it as a sig (or mini-profile like I'll probably do), they're limited to what they have to say. Quality over quantity! Here here!

eh. so far im fine with the new new hawtness.

  • 03.20.2007 1:57 PM PDT

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

I liked it the old way. Now we can't add witty formats to them and hot sigs can't catch any attention unless someone hovers the mouse over the avatar. The old way ws alot better but I guess it isn't all that bad.

I will admit that it places more importance on the content of one's post.

However (and part of me is reluctant to mention it, but I am certain that members will start even if I didn't) I suspect that people will start manually "sigging" their posts because they feel that they have "lost billboard space".

I don't know. If it becomes prevalent, I could probably then test out the new ninja-warning feature.

Honestly though I'd rather have an option in my profile that allows me to toggle where the signature is displayed.

Likewise.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Hmm, its kind of a double edged coin for me. I like not having to look at people's sigs. Sometimes, they were nothing but page breaking eyesores. But, now I'm going to have to actually try to check them to see if there is bad content, which could be annoying. But, I'll get used to it. I'm liking it so far.

About the post sigs, I'll only do something about it if its distracting, or if it becomes a real problem. If you all use your heads, and can avoid taking it too far, I won't mind. Blocks of text and ads will warrant some attention, but a simple sentence of two should be okay.

I would have to agree as well. That would be a nice feature.. I mean, signatures under posts just make it easier to view without.. viewing. Sometimes something catches your eye that wouldn't have otherwise drawn you to view their signature..

I like the way that signatures have been dealt with. As far as what Evilcam said about the page breakers I have all but this to say, no more. I am absolutely glad that those hideous things are but of the past.

That is a valid point. But one thing that I notice about Anton/Steve's third person postscripts are that not a single one is copy-paste and all are relevant to his reply.

Also, I don't mind (too terribly) small "manual sigs" of initials that TGP and many others use to close their post. I was speaking more of someone using "copy-paste" to close out every post they make with 3-15 lines of advertisement, self-promotion, misleading links, and other annoyances.

You bring up a good point, and I thank you for asking me to clarify and refine my thinking. I hope that my explanation is more reasonable and makes my thoughts on the matter seem less arbitrary and soulless.

I too see your point, Recon.
I guess the only foreseeable problem is that it may be difficult to draw the line. C/P situations are easily spotted, but if our time on bnet has taught us anything it's that the kiddies can be inventive.
In such situations there are always gray areas which will inevitably cause problems when trying to enforce any such rule.
I, for one, am (and admittedly irrationally so) annoyed by Steve's post-scripts and by other users who feel the need to manually sign their posts be it with initials, or something more...third person.
I say that only to illustrate that I know that, while it bugs the hell out of me, there's no reason to force them to stop. It's all a matter of preference. I'm glad I'm not a mod forced to make that judgment call.
