Subject: Bungie.net's Programmed Grammar Errors?

It's always been like this. Only one space is registered between any two characters. I always hit the spacebar twice after a sentence but it always shows up as one. This really gets my goat. Why doesn't bungie.net recognize two spaces?

Because, apparently the proper number of spaces is One.

Actually no, because this means you cannot indent aswell and I find it rather annoying.

I think it's mainly to keep people from making annoying ASCII art and making unnecessary spaces in their posts. It's not a personal letter, it's a forum. Indents are not required for communication. I don't think two spaces after a sentence is proper anywhere, either.

Well, if that's the case, I've been taught wrong my entire life.

True, but when members right fanfics I'm sure they would love to indent, or me as a reader, big blocks of text are rather stressful.

Sure, it looks nice, but then again Forums aren't really designed around fanfics.

Some English teachers teach two spaces instead of one. But I think the correct MLA format way is one space.

Indeed, the proper format is two spaces after a period. As a matter of fact... I just hit it twice without even thinking about it.

I agree that it isn't necessary for multiple spaces, but I also don't see a reason not to. If the limit is imposed on purpose, they could just increase it to allow up to five (standard tab amount, if I remember right) in a row. Having tab would simply be another tool to use to organize posts, and to make them clearer. When I'm not so tired, maybe I'll come up with an nice example.

Hmm... after reading this, maybe the issue isn't quite so simple. Oh well, I'm off to bed now.

I've discussed this with Frankie a few times. I used to habitually double space between sentences, but he looked at me as if he wanted to rip the spacebar off of my keyboard and stab me in the eye with it.

Frankie is wrong. The entire staff of my local university insist on two spaces after a period.

Then again, I tend to disagree with them more often than I do Frankie.... hmmmm

  • 03.21.2007 2:43 AM PDT

I asked my English teacher today. She says that two spaces after a period is the correct way. So to all who think otherwise.. you're wrong. The lack of two spaces makes it harder for me to read posts because it just looks like a giant run-on sentence. There's no differentiation between a setence and the one following it. I want this changed. (if it's a problem with the giant posts of just spaces, make the max amount of spaces two and everyone will be happy)

I doubt you read the link I posted. Like I guessed, it most likely isn't up to B.net. Browsers only render one space, due to technical reasons. You should read the first couple paragraphs of that link, it will explain things better.

Edit: Oh, and Frankie isn't wrong. The internet standard is one space only, which has moved into the "real" world, as well. So everyone who uses two spaces is just being old and outdated. =( But really, there is no wrong answer. One or two, someone will agree that that is standard.

The problem isn't bungie.net....the problem is HTML code only recognizes a single space. If you want extra spaces you have to code them in using

I actually read that, before you posted it because I was looking. It really had no conclusive ''evidence." It just basically said that either one was fine. The site also said that given the fonts and sized of todays internet texts, it would be easy to differentiate between sentences. In my opinon, this site does a poor job of differentiating between sentences.Edit: Oh, and Frankie isn't wrong. This is correct. One space. Two spaces after a period is a relic from typewriter days and the days of monospaced fonts. One is the new two.

Is pressing the space bar 5 times that hard?

I thought that was what a period was for? Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's just there for looks.

Some teachers in school require it early on.
However, having been an English minor in college, I took multiple linguistics classes. As you might imagine I've written my share of formal papers and never once have I had a professor mention puting two spaces after a period.

If you're scanning the page you cannot tell individual sentences. You obviously can tell when you're actually reading, but when scanning a page you should be able to tell where one sentence ends and the other beings.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the point of posting to have your post read?

but when scanning a page you should be able to tell where one sentence ends and the other beings.
That's terribly helpful if your hobby is counting sentences, otherwise it's useless.

With that logic we may as well make every single sentence its own paragraph. I hate to be mean, but this is a bit ridiculous. A period and space is fine.
