Subject: Bungie.net's Programmed Grammar Errors?

The problem isn't bungie.net....the problem is HTML code only recognizes a single space. If you want extra spaces you have to code them in using

Exactly, however, it could be easily made to work that way.

Indeed, the proper format is two spaces after a period. As a matter of fact... I just hit it twice without even thinking about it.

I've discussed this with Frankie a few times. I used to habitually double space between sentences, but he looked at me as if he wanted to rip the spacebar off of my keyboard and stab me in the eye with it.

During whichever year of school it was that we learn how many spaces you use after a sentence, I was taught by that specific teacher that double is correct. I've used it in all of my papers since then, and no one has ever bothered me about it.. I assumed it was correct.

I do double spaces after periods anyway, and the fact that it doesn't register isn't a large problem with me.

Again, having logged my hours in the English department at University, I was never once by any professor; asked to double space following a period.
It simply isn't necessary anymore.

Probably because it's a given. They teach that in first grade, not Freshman year.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Ignore what your teachers told you in grammar school. It is correct typography to use only one space.

Or perhaps, rather, it's because that which is common practice at grade-school level is not always accepted as correct at a college/professional level.

It's cute how you want to speculate about the motives of my college professors.
Stay in school.

I think it's mainly to keep people from making annoying ASCII art and making unnecessary spaces in their posts. It's not a personal letter, it's a forum. Indents are not required for communication. I don't think two spaces after a sentence is proper anywhere, either.

Huh? I can't understand you without the indent...

Way ahead of you buddy. Maybe I just went to college "back in the old days" when they taught proper diction.

Two spaces is standard practice.

Then you might as well go all the way!

Here's a quote from an article of interest.

"The only reason that two spaces were used after a period during the 'typewriter' age was because original typewriters had monospaced fonts -- the extra space was needed for the eye to pick up on the beginning of a new sentence. That need is negated w/proportional space type, hence [it is] the typographic standard."
The source for that quote can be found at the following link.

Did you read my last post where I cited no less than five sources that say that one space after punctuation is proper? Sorry, sir cumference, but it is not standard practice.

EDIT: I see that the post above me already said the same thing.... so nevermind. Kinda.

I'd never even heard of having two spaces after a full stop before.

Way ahead of you buddy. Maybe I just went to college "back in the old days" when they taught proper diction.

Diction, surely, is the word choice, and is unrelated to the punctuation. So whatever the hell they taught you, rest assured it wasn't diction.

Apparently the standards for knight-hood have become lax as of late.
