Well, groups are conspicuously absent from the new hawtness, because bungie is making them all pimped out. An idea I had would be a chat room enabled by default for groups. Many groups have a sticky with a gabbly chat url, or even an IRC channel, but I think it would be much simpler to make a bungie.net chat automatically for the group. Then the group founder could have a few additional options for the chat (giving certain security permissions to boot or ban people from the chat room). I don't know if this would be a sidebar, a fifth topic, or just a little box that appears on the bottom of your screen while browsing the group (kind of like the old navigation bar). Just a thought for making groups awesome again. Thoughts?

I use to use the irc channel alot.....

Groups absolutely need to have A Chatroom... I sure hope the people who put this site together have thought about that...

Good idea. I love the IRC system but it is a little bit of a hassle; especially as some members can't get onto IRC from work for instance. Rewolf. Ahem. :]

I'm just too lazy to download IRC. It's because I fear trying new things.

I disagree. Most groups could never hope to achieve the activity levels sufficient to warrant the existence of such a feature.

I also disagree. Some groups do, and even a group of 20 (or 10) deserves the chance to chat with each other without relying on gabbly or something. No true group system would be complete without a chat.

indeed, if a group could sustain activity in both the Forum and the Chat then i would say go for it.

I don't see a real need because most groups are inactive. Some are quite active but Bungie doesn't need to trouble itself when there are options for chatting. Just stick with making threads for chatting.

I hope they make groups like chapters. Pre-new hawtness v.1 came out. Those were the sickest.

I was actually disagreeing with your post. [Most] groups could never take advantage of a chat feature. Something like MSN is a better option - you can talk to people who aren't members of your "fanclub", and it is much more convenient. Any group under 100 members simply would not be active enough to utilise a chatroom effectively.

I know that. Maybe I just worded it poorly. Depending on how bungie might make a chat system, I think it could be some sort of optional sidebar that would stay with you while on bungie.net. If activity is really that much of a problem, multiple groups could share the same chat room (ie, "allied" groups), while each group would have the option to go off and make their own chat when they get bigger.

I think it's worth mentioning that a lot of groups don't make any use of their resources beyond a superficial statement of the rules and regulations, but that didn't stop bungie from letting us have those. This website isn't a business where any feature deemed superfluous is removed, it's for the benefit of bungie's loyal fans. I think the only way this could be a failure is if the huge (and active) groups use some other chat method instead of bungie's.

I like the idea. How hard would it be for Bungie to implement it?

That's a question we need answered. Hmm, this thread is being ignored by mods. That's not fair.

I definitely agree with the 2nd to last post. Just because it's superfluous doesn't mean it's not cool. A great deal of active groups could use it. I know for a fact that they can easily become inactive, but there are active groups out there. many of them. just more inactive.

I'd like to see chat. I tried getting my members to use Gmail Chat, but it became inactive. I don't know if it would have ever worked. if they don't put it in, I may have to try it again. Please put chat in, Bungie!

EDIT: This is off-topic don't reply to this. just felt i had to say it. it's the first time i've typed 'Bungie' in a post since NH2, and the word's misspelled. WoW. sorry.

True, but they are probably closer to Achronos than we are. Achronos is the guy who we'd have to convince to do this. I thought about this a little more, and a chat function would probably have to be some sort of sidebar, or a floating window, because people would want to browse bungie.net while chatting.

it isn't a bad idea, just would not work out for groups under 100 or maybe 50 members. It's just not easy to keep groups active. Plus with different time zones some members might loose out in chattiong because no one else is on.

  • 03.22.2007 4:22 PM PDT

An excellent idea, i would use it alot

That would be the most kickass idea but it sounds like a lot of work, so I wouldn't count on it ever happening. If it did however, the 7th column would definatly be the best thing since, well the old 7th column(which is basically the best fan community ever), but with chats.
