Subject: Better Way of Contacting Mods?

I know that the PM system works, but it's difficult because if there's quite a few mods on at the same time, who do you PM? Do you PM all of them or just one?

New Ninja PM System:
It would be one "account" that all the mods can look at. Mods would still have their own PM system and account, but just one they can check. This would be off limits to everyone else. I think it would be more efficient than trying to locate a Mod and PM him. Perhaps next to the "New Topic" button make a "Report Thread" button.

Imbedded Mod-Watch:
I know there's one here which is located in the one of the stickies, but I think that one integrated into Bungie.net would serve a better purpose and be more accurate. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with that one (I've used it), but I just think something like that could be put to better use. It could be located at the bottom of the Public Forums page. You click on it and it brings up the "Mod-Watch" similar to how you view your friends that are online.

If either one of those is implemeted into Bungie.net, it would almost render the other useless. If you have a mod-watch you immediately know what mod is on instead of "within 30 minutes". If there's a new Mod PM system, you wouldn't need the mod-watch because any mod at any time can check the Mod-Box. Btw, I mean no disrespect to kd5shw and jmh9072, I just think that their idea could be put to better use.

What are your thoughts/opinions? Disagree/Agree? Changes?

I think a "Flag this thread/post for moderator review" button would be better. That way there arent a hundred diferent emails to 10 different mods about the same post.

I too like the flag system proposal.

Not all mods would be sent the message. It would go to a separate place and the mods can access it through there instead of all of them having hundreds of PMs. They would still have their own inbox, but also have a Mod-Box where bad threads can be reported. They would be separate from each other.

As do I, but it's important to think an idea like this out in detail. It has upsides and downsides. Click here to see my very detailed post from several weeks ago regarding the pros and cons, as well as the implementation benefits of a "flagging" system.

The problem with the 'flag' system is that it's far too easily abused.

There would have to be a significant penalty for abusing it or some would flag the thread if someone so much as disagreed with them.

Get MSN and add them. All the mods, except one or two have MSN and are usually on it.
PMing mods isn't hard either.

Seriously? Mods are not hard to contact. :P

Got a report? Use the report tool or send a pm.

You can always use the moderator email which is bnetmods@gmail.com. I'm not sure how often it's checked but i'll certainly be checking it more now. Ideally we would have an online/offline feature for all members at some point.

QFT. That is what I do and it works fine. Give it a try.

Yeah, I wasnt trying to claim credit for the idea, I just thought it was a better option than what the OP posted.

Every idea has its downside, which is why my first idea usually amounts to "Just leave everything the hell alone. I like it this way". It has its downside, but at least its a downside we're used to.

Well if you used VBulletin then it has a way that only people with a certain number of posts (or in a certain ranking) can even report a post. In this case you could easily make it so that only people with over 1000 posts can report a thread. In that sense you know it is people who have been around longer that are reporting and while you may occasionally get a bad report, it certainly filters out a ton. Otherwise like I said you could have different user groups and then take the most active and respected members of the community and add them to the group and they would then be able to report posts. Having several hundred members of that group would be ideal for the number of mods we have.

You should read my thread on dealing with the abuse-of-the-flagging-system problem, referenced above. That issue can be addressed, and I have done so in my flagging idea.

It's only "within 30 minutes" because Achronos (and team) changed a few things on the site and I no longer have access to last login times. Perhaps this means that he is planning something like this? Or maybe they just forgot to add that feature in.

Well what of the members that either did not think of that or have no idea that such an option was open to them? Not to mention that such an option creates a situation where a Mods personal address list is full of people he either does not want to talk to or does not know at all.

Plus the whole spamming of the IMs might be a little annoying if abused by members.

It's been this way for a long time. They're mature, most of them adults, and can handle some one bothering them. There's this lovely 'block' feature. Still, PMs are equally as bad. Maybe we should stop compensating for the 'what ifs'. Most 'what ifs' people come up with on these forums are the most outrageous things, only highly stupid people would do (or not do, in this case).

Unless you new guys use it, I can say that it is hardly ever used, trust me. I am pretty sure you know what I am talking about Prophet.

Now, I personally like the MSN way of dealing with it. Mods that are on here are usually on there, other than stosh; he'll just tease you. As for the mod watch, it is actually rather simple. Send a mod whose name is in gold a private message, wait ten to fifteen minutes, then send a different mods the private message whose name is in gold.

Not to pick on you Roki, but I think that your reply and Zag's both illustrate why a flagging system would be easier. As simple as the methods you've noted may be, they are still pretty complicated.

Issues with the system as it is now: the requirement of multiple browser/instant message windows to be open at the same time, constant refreshing, the necessity of multiple PMing when you PM a mod who has just signed off or who never checks his/her PMs, and dealing with the times when no mods are online or they are not responding....

all of these problems would be fixed with a flagging system.

Moreover, a flagging system such as the one I've proposed would allow the members trusted with flagging duties to flag from anywhere, whereas using MSN at work is a risky proposition for people like me, and the whole "open up new browser window -> go to septagon -> go to modwatch thread -> click on modwatch link -> refresh -> click to get to profile -> click to PM -> flip back to 1st browser window -> copy address -> paste address into PM -> write a little note -> send the PM" system (or subtle variations thereof) is complicated enough to be prohibitively annoying. Flagging posts would be a much easier and faster way for anybody to notify a moderator about a problem thread.

Really, the system has no drawbacks except for the work of coding it into the website and the barely increased load on moderators for approving/disapproving/demoting members for flagging duties, which would actually save time in the long run by reducing the necessity of constantly checking PMs, constantly feeling the need to be available on MSN, and having an easy way of identifying "problem" threads first.

No problem Foman, but please, call me Rokit.

I must agree, the flagging system is a good idea. And the one question that I was always wondering is the "who would have the ability question" and now, you have answered that. Sorry, I never really had the time to go back to your thread regarding this topic. So, that is my main question right there answered. I am just saying though, that as of the moment, MSN is the easiest way to get in contact with the mods. I have talk to just about all of them, and the ones I have talked to agree, that MSN is a far easier, and quicker, way of dealing with problem threads. And just making an inbox for all of them might be problematic, due to many people flagging the same thread, this would build up spam. However, if there were to be an option of a pop-up saying "This thread has already been flagged and is being dealt with as necessary" then the idea would be almost perfect. None the less, I agree with you, the flagging system is a good idea for the new members and for those that cannot get MSN or other instant messengers.

Perhaps a simplistic client for the moderators that gives a notification that bnetmod e-mail has come in, and displays the title's subject?

I like the mod-box. Simple, easy, and, unlike the MSN option, requires no user effort. Of course, the 'New Messages' bug needs to be fixed first.
Besides, I hate MSN.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

I prefer the MSN approach. I added my MSN to my sig so if members need me they can reach me. It used to be in our profiles but that line apparently got the axe in the update. Of course there still is the PM system as well.
