With the new site, there are plenty of new options, however there's not a way (that I've found) to change your display name. Is the ability planned to be added? It seems like a great time to add the feature, and it wouldn't be too hard either.

We can change our gamerpicture. We can change our gamerprofile. We can change the email on our .net passport. We can even change our gamertag. We can change basically everything people recognize us online by. Infact, the only thing that's needed by the site itself to track us is something most people will never see (unique ID number), much less pay attention to. Having the ability to change your display name would actually reduce some of the stress on the server. Many people register second, or even third accounts because they want to change who they're known as. This fills up the database with useless information which won't be used. How to put it in simple terms...

You have a box (the database) which 700 red and 300 blue legos (accounts) go into. Red legos are used accounts and blue ones are unused. Each lego has a unique number writen on it. So you toss all the legos into the box, then your friend tells you he needs the one with 496 written on it, but you don't know what color it is. You have to sift through each and every lego to try and find it, meaning you might need to look through 300 useless accounts before you find it. With the renaming feature, however, there might be 700 red, and only 50 blues. This reduces the number of legos looked at by 250, making the process faster.

It can be easily coded and intergrated, so why not? If would fit in perfectly at the top of the Pofile Settings page, so it's not a probelm of placement, or very advanced coding (I could do it, and I can't even drive.)

Customization is good, and Xbox and Xbox Live are all about it, why not bungie too?

*EDIT*
Figured I should add this to main post since some people never read any replies:

Maybe there should be a limit, like only once a month or two or such. It just seems silly that you can't do it at all. Seems ironic that you can change the name you play under (gamertag), but can't change your name on a forum about playing.

Regarding Impersonation:
They wouldn't be able to forge a linked gamertag, nor could they use a name already in use.[/qoute]

It wouldn't be good because the ability to, on a whim, change your identity like that, would make you almost invisible to mods and uproot any identity you have. Even if you made a post/PM informing everyone of your change, that would be spam, and many would miss it. The community would be unstable and impersonal, no one would know each other and new members would have alot of trouble establishing their identity and reputation, which is important in becoming an accepted member of the community.

Agreed with Pezza. Identity here is extremely important - both to "good" members who want to establish who they are and to moderators for help in identifying "bad" members.

Can you imagine a spammer changing his display name every time a thread was locked? Yikes!

Teabag makes you good.

Can't mods change people's display names?

Impersonation/Identity theft would also be a problem.

Honestly? I think changing names completely is a bad idea. You should pick a name, and stick with it.. I'm not sure why someone would want to be (for an example of one that I've seen): "xxBXRPWNxx" and then want their name changed to "Jimmy is Sik" or something of the sort.. Just pick a stupid name. Sheesh. :P

As for fixing names? Such as 'innapropriate' names (in the case of which the person didn't realize it) and typos? Well, be more careful. I'm happy with my name, and have been since at least 1999. Why can't anyone else decide long-term things like that? If it's really a "huge" problem, get a new account. It's kind of lame on your part, but if you really want it fixe.. :P

I don't think you understand how identity theft works.

@SS_Zag
Some people, like me, created their account in haste, or thought you could relink your gamertag to a different passport, but are now screwed, because, for whatever reason, Microsoft decided not to tell us that you couldn't relink a gamertag anymore after migrating your live account until a few weeks after the 360 came out. This was supposed to be a crap account for migrating my gamertag. I had just registered on bungie so I could reply, while searching how to relink my gamertag on xbox.com. Now I'm screwed.

@Snap Dragon
You change your gamertag and all your name in all your posts is changed, due to the way forums work. You acknowledge that someone can take your old name once you switch. It's your choice. It's not like someone can take your name and edit your posts.

No, changing your display name would be horrible. Not to mention your reasons why doing so are not a big deal either, profiles are but just a small bit of information compared to the forums and Halo stats. This topic has been discussed many times before, and every time it is the same. This won't happen, nor will it ever. We won't even get smiley faces for christs sake!! Kidding Achronos, I completely agree with you on that one, smilies are a waste, and rather pointless. Anyway, back to the topic at hand. There is no point in changing your name, if you want to change it, simply make a new account. Now, you may say what you stated above, but that is a simple fix as well, don't log into this account for about a year or so, it will automatically be deleted. Then simply link you gamertag. Or you could manually delete it. Either one works quite well.
