I am still very curious of exactly how many of these will be produced. 36,000 a week is a good starter, but I'd like to know just how early I am going to have to go sit outside of my local gamestop in order for my preorder to be fulfilled on launch day.

Also I am sick and tired of people calling the helmet "cat sized". You should take 3 seconds of your time to notice that the helmet goes OVER the game cases in the tower-like structure of the base, and it obviously is at least as tall if not a few inches taller than a standard DVD case. Standard DVD cases are about 7 inches tall. Last time i checked, cats heads were NOWHERE even close to being 7 inches in diameter.... more like 3.5 inches. Also, due to Bungie and Microsoft not planning for it to be wearable, the visor is probably not transparent, and the helmet probably has some kind of internal structure in order for it to snap onto the tower, or increase rigidity.

This is going to be a badass display piece, I just hope i get one with my preorder.

People saying that they are "disappointed" that some "Chinese guys" are making THEIR helmet in 12 seconds need to get a little better educated in more ways than one before posting on here.

For starters, they make 36,000 helmets a week. That means, they make about 36,000 a week...however, if you play with unit conversions you can make that seem like anything you want, say for example, there is one helmet made every 12 seconds. Is one helmet actually molded and assembled in exactly 12 seconds? No, not at all, but it is a nifty way of showing how quickly all the parts are coming together and how hard these people are working to bring us this quality product.

As for the people being disappointed that Microsoft and Bungie are "exploiting cheap labor," I suggest you read up on what is actually occurring overseas. I don't know the exact details, but I do know their wages and standard of living vary greatly with ours. A $20 DVD over here costs about $1 to $2 over there, so a smaller amount of money goes a lot further over there. Many workers in China and other Asian countries make $.30 an hour, where our minimum wage is around $5 to $7 for relatively unskilled labor. That translates to a lot of savings in production if the helmets are made overseas instead of here, which is also why many companies (not just Microsoft) use this strategy.

I don't claim to know everything about their lifestyles, but I have learned enough to know when it is inappropriate to bash corporations, especially ones like Bungie, when in reality not many over here know what is happening. Bungie won't deliver a shotty product, but they also won't exploit hard working people overseas. In the end, have a little faith in Bungie.

demand exceeding 450,00 units

I noticed there was only 2 zeros after the comma... so is it supposed to be 45 thousand or 450 thousand? Just how many of these things will there be?

Strange evolution how people have come to believe
That we are it's greatest achievement
We're barely, we're just a collection of cells
Overrating themselves

I like it!

Face it Bungie, people are going to complain regardless. Currently, they're complaining about it being made in a Chinese sweatshop. If you had chosen an American manufacturer they would be complaining that $250 is too much for a game. I've always found it funny that people want products to be made in America but are unwilling to pay the price for it.

On a side note, it did remind me of this article courtesy of The Onion.

I work here: Sound Devices, LLC. We make bad-ass field audio gear, and you think that's awesome. My messy desk (With work-related items on the computer screen).

I totally agree. The people who are complaining about these products being made in China really need to open their eyes to their current economic environment: Everything is made in China.

Yes, many situations exist where workers are being exploited by not getting paid enough to support their families; But that is not the truth in every factory. Judging from the photos, it looks like the working conditions in that factory are excellent. Hell, it looks cleaner there than it does around my desk right now. :) It is a little creepy how the dudes wear blue and the chicks wear pink... (Kind of Willy Wonka-ish). However, to assume that they are being exploited simply because they are in Asia, is ignorant. and remember: I do believe that Halo is popular in other countries in addition to America and European countries... (Let's see.. um.. China maybe?)

And the second point is very insightful too: If the product were made anywhere else, you'd all be whining and protesting that it costs way to much. this is the typical American (And some other commonwealth countries) ignorance. You can't have your cake and eat it too, as they say. On one hand, you demand low prices, and then on the other hand you demand that all products are made in America. An then, on your left foot (I ran out of hands), you demand that you get paid a minimum wage if you're working in the factory that makes the product... See how this (il)logic consumes itself?

So you should respect the Chinese people's labor and their willingness to do something that you're unable to do because the way your country has structured the economy...

And yes: I was born and raised in America, and still living here with my wife and son. I don't hate the place, but I hate what it does sometimes.

I think that.... oh wait.....

Bungie controls everything. You have no rights. Play nice

To be honest, and I mean this sincerely, I frankly daren't post my criticism of the article.

To all that are interested in the subject: do your homework without the benefit of intermediaries and come to your own conclusions... I believe you'll find some of the issues raised along the way very enlightening.

If I can get an assurance from moderators that I will not be banned for referring to serious and factual questions regarding the conduct of 'corporation X ' in China then I shall be happy to post my criticism. If not.... no worries... I know my place. Besides, we're focused on the making of a Spartan helmet-shaped game package here... not wider concerns.

Anyway, I thought the factory looked very clean.

I went with the Limited Edition. It's a nice-looking helmet, but I collect action figures/toys, not statues or other non-articulated items. (So no, I don't collect McFarlane toys anymore, either.)

Plus the extra items I want most are the art and fiction books. Though I'm a bit disappointed I won't get the remastered cinematics.

we would have only looked at the retail box packaging and left the helmet design and such to others, this product allowed us to take the virtual concept of the MATER Chief helmet and bring it into the physical world

It minimizes USA and European Labor and protects the helmet from EVERY being touched from the time it leaves China to the time the end customer opens the box when he gets it home.

This is a great thing and I will be getting one. I'm also sure that every one you can make will be sold. However, I believe that Bungie could have thought a little more ahead and made these things bigger.

Think about it. What does everyone say the first time you tell them about the helmet? "Can I wear it?" "No, it's only big enought for a cats head." "Awww...that would have been cool if you could wear it."

Now had Bungie made these helmets big enough for people to wear, PLUS put mics in the helmet, you would have people all over the world sitting on their couches wearing Spartan helmets while playing Halo 3. Instead they will sit on a bookshelf, which is just not as cool. But yes...I will be getting one. I just dream of what might have been....

A witty signature you say ! ? well at the moment i have nothing witty that springs to mind, so sory..................nope still nothing.......

Great read, I really would love to get hold of a copy of the legendary edition, better get a pre-order in at my local Game (retailer in Britain)
That’s a crazy amount of helmets that get manufactured over in China (36,000 helmets per week in a six day week, equals 6,000 per day) one helmet every twelve seconds! lol when you think about it briefly it seems there will be enough for everyone but I know that's not the case. Before I couldn’t begin to imagine the sort of work that must go into the marketing and manufacturing of something as big as halo. But thanks to this I have gained a greater understanding of what sort of processeses that go into making this sort of thing happen, it sounds like an immense challenge but if you are passionate and take pride in what you are doing then you can pull it off.

cheers SketchFactor

edit: I just hope the factory workers in China don't get sick of seeing mc's helmet of the factory line every week.
