If you invite me to your group you will be blocked.

There should be an option for group filters, and if group leader chooses no a warning should be required.

Well as a elader of a group we have had problems from people posting -blam!- to some hard core !@$%$ language. We have delt with them fast, but the option to have a filter is a good idea as long as it isnt automatically left in groups. Bungie should laissez-faire groups like they always have.

I agree; optional is the best choice. There should be a warning for new members if the filter is disabled.

It's a very divided issue: on the one hand, you have to maintain the integrity of Bungie.net, and filter out the offensive content. On the other hand, you have the fact that the group forums and all subsequent discussions (as of the last site model) are hidden from non-members, and as such they are inoffensive to those who cannot read them. In the end, it's a good comprimise to choose whether or not to implement a filter. It would probably be a good idea to poll the group, to see what the majority wants.

I work here: Sound Devices, LLC. We make bad-ass field audio gear, and you think that's awesome. My messy desk (With work-related items on the computer screen).

One does not simply grenade jump into Mordor...

I'm going to take the more conservative approach on this one: Since Bungie hosts the content, and ultimately has responsibility for what's up there (Whether they put it there or not), I believe they have the right to force the filter to be on for all forums and groups. There is absolutely nothing pertinent to Halo that can't be said without using objectionable language.

The option should be there, yes.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -

But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

That's where the flaw in your argument shows up. First of all, B.net isn't simply about Halo; there are many other Bungie games. Second of all, private groups aren't for the discussion of merely bungie related topics. You can talk about whatever you want.

For example some groups talk about politics, or simply just have general debates. I don't believe that private chapters need to be regulated by the language filter if they don't want to be, so I vote that it should be optional.

Yes. I like the filter. Flaming would be worse without it.

I actually like the filters for the most part, considering most groups try to create flame free gaming envoriment, taking the flitlers off would be the exact oppisite of what most of the groups want. But maybe having as an option would be fair, although sometimes when there is co-admin it can get dificult, because one group leader wants it on, and the other wants it off... And really, it would be a hard feature to add onto the bungie hawtness already.

No i think groups should keep the language filter on with no options to turn it off. That way no matter what no one could get offended.

But groups could get the option to change what the filter says. So instead of the classical -blam!- they could change ti to -censored- or some other word of there choosing, as long as it's not profanity.

Why the hell are you looking at this? Get out.

And no group invites, you jerk. I'm not interested.

ah, the old freedom versus security arguement. this time, verbal censorship.

ok, here's the obvious thing. it's really up to Bungie. if they feel like giving more freedom, they can. if not, well, it's not up to you anyway. if it is, you better change it! (joke!).

anyway, maybe the member points thing would work. but perhaps that'd take too much. the ideas of a 'karma' system have been around for a while. i'm disappointed to see it still not here. so we may as well deal with having less freedom. or just as easily, leave.

All rationality aside, I think the best choice is to make it an option for group leaders. It's only logical.

I'm going to take the more conservative approach on this one: Since Bungie hosts the content, and ultimately has responsibility for what's up there (Whether they put it there or not), I believe they have the right to force the filter to be on for all forums and groups.

That is (I think) the core reason for it existing and why it is used site-wide.

I would like to think that (perhaps) changes to group management might allow a group admin to turn it off for their group, but would require (as a CYA) a legal disclaimer to be agreed to by any member as they enter that group. By agreeing to the disclaimer, they would acknowledge their age and state that they understand that they are entering a "less controlled" environment and that anything said/seen is the responsibility of the poster and the viewer.

That might work.

I like that idea.

I'm not easily offended by profanity, but I don't go out of my way to expose myself to it. If it were a "reward", I would probably leave the filter on. If someone calls me a blam.... the specific term really isn't that important to me.

I honestly don't think that you would have to put up with that much in groups. Most admins would know if their group is the type that could handle it properly. If a user abused it, they could be dealt with appropriately. And if you do come across a group that uses some sort of vulgarity regularly, you could simply leave.

I really don't see a downside to this. In my opinion, it just puts more control into the group admin's hands, whether they use it or not.

Edit: *note to self*: Quotes now leave a larger space between them and the text. Extra spacing no longer required.
