I am a pretty good sniper myself and spent alot of time playing with my friend in Halo map. I mostly play on blood gulch on CTF. I am hear to give you pointer on good sniping.
1. The best gun a sniper can have as a secondary is either the AR or the shotgun. I prefer the AR because it have sufficient range and ammo capacity along with stopping power.
2. Find yourself a good position where you can find sufficient cover if things get hairy or if you need to reload.
3. Conserve your ammo. Only shoot when you have the target in sight and can be certain that the bullet will hit. Don't follow someone with your fire. That will only leave you vulnerable when you need to reload. Also it will give you away.
4. If someone finds you, retreat (trust me), and switch to your second weapon and start blasting. If you are surrounded, lay down some covering fire and start jumping like hell. Backtrack until you are near your base, or dead.
5. When you have a sniper rifle in hand, find some ammo before going into combat. It will smart because if you find a good sniping location, having alot of ammo guarantee you a longer stay.
Those are my advice, if they don't help than you just suck and should never touch a sniper rifle again.
