I'm friends with the person that runs Clantacular.com and he has recently implemented a new feature onto the website; a reputation system.

I was talking to him in a Pregame Lobby one day, and briefly described to me how it works. Basically if someone is making good, solid posts, you can give them a +1 for their reputation. There is also an opposite effect. If you are being a real jerk, then people can give you a -1 to your reputation. I think he said that one member is allowed to "rate" another one a certain ammount of times.

I can find a plus side to this, but also a negative side, and their both the same.

New Accounts

I think this would stop people from creating new accounts all of the time, because when they start a new one, they go back to zero. But then again, people might might make a bunch of new accounts, just to rate themselves on their primary account.

It's a pretty neat feature on Clantacular.com, but I don't know what kind of a purpose it would serve on this site.

Please tell me your thoughts.

Exactly why this wouldn't work.

This would just yield to what we don't want. The idea that one person is "better" than another person. Reputations is just a different version of your rank.

I think it could work, if there was something that gave people incentive to have one, and only one, identity on Bungie.net.

It wouldn't be like that. And even if it was, you'd have to be really nice to get a positive reputation in the first place.

This idea has been mentioned quite a few times. And each time there has been one main issue; that being is that this community is too large and far too immature to handle such a thing. You must remember, the average age on this site is ranged from 10-18, which is the exact range for grudges. The only way this would truly work would be only allowing super users and the mods to give reputation, members doing it would be catastrophic. And of course letting the reputation meter only being visible to the super users and moderators, the ones that give the reputation. So really, there is no use for this idea.

You are absolutely right. People would give negative reputation out of spite. I didn't even think of that.

I think there is potential for this idea, however, it won't happen.

You're probably right. But please people, list some ideas that you think would make this work. I wish I had talked more to the guy at Clantacular about it.

The first thing would be a much smaller community. That would help a lot. Then, since the first option isn't really a can do unless the soul gets loose again, I suggest that only moderators and super users can give and take reputation. As well as super users and moderators being the only ones that can view it so that elitism will be no where to be found. However, with the mods being able to see the warnings and bans of users, it isn't really a must have to have a reputation system.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I just want the "member sense" date back under my name.

That was the only thing that made me feel more then just another member.

I hated that with a passion. Elitism was everywhere, and every since it was removed life has been much more easy going on bungie.net.

I do like the idea of only moderators being able to give/take reputation points. It would give people even more of a reason to be on good behavior.

I was never looked down upon for my join date.

What was the problem you had with it?

People would belittle other people, just because they have been a member longer.

  • 03.24.2007 3:06 PM PDT

a Reputations System would show elitism, not to mention members would abuse it.

I was looked down upon. Due to my profile being created in mid 2006. A few months just before the join dates were taken off from the main forum pages. Ever since then, life has gone easy. And personaly, I would love if they were to never come back.

We have established that. We are trying to find a way that it wouldn't come to that. Someone has offered the idea that only moderators can give/take reputation for constant good/bad behavior.

If you had a bad reputation, it would be like a mark of shame, and I don't think people would want that.

Is it okay if I call you art? Anyway, back to the topic people, have you not read the rest of the topic? GoldenNinja is up for criticism, and as you can see from my suggestions, he is up for only allowing super users and moderators to give or take reputation, as well as view it.

You would be very surprised in what people will do just to get attention.

Lol. Well, I can't think of a flaw in the moderators/super users having reputation power. I also don't think they would give it out willy nilly either, so, if you have a good reputation, than you've earned it.

I am also active on clantacular and I love the rep system there. It helps me decide who I want to play with or against and who I will just ignore. One detail you overlooked is that you can only affect antoher player's rep by one point and cannot submit another one until you have rated at least 15 other people. This helps with abuse. Also, severe bad rep will get a person banned if the mods agree that the person deserves that rep. The only reason I don't know if it would work here is because players are just chatting, not competing all the time.
