It is generally difficult to figure out which moderator is online so that you can report a thread. In the older version of the site, they showed when a user was last logged on, now it only says when the user last made a post. I see no reason for this downgrade. Wouldn't it instead be much more efficient, in reporting threads, to simply say if a user is online or offline? If someone wants privacy then an option could be shown as offline like they do with XboxLive.

This has been discussed many times. And every time it is always the same. Personally, I would only want this feature only if you would be able to toggle it that you are offline just as you sign in. Unlike XboxLive where you sign in then appear offline.

Without a doubt, for everyone.

Adding a feature that allowed users to see which moderator was on or off wouldn't be wise. That would just allow users with the sole intent of harming this place to "spy" on the moderators. When most of them are off, they spam and attack the forums. The way it is now completely mysterious is the way to keep it. Ninjas are, afterall, sneaky and stealthy.

Meh. Maybe not for moderators. It'd be a double-edged sword, and the costs may outweigh the benifits.

We already have such a feature, though it doesn't work very well since the New Hawtness v2.0.

Aha, there it is. I've been looking for that page since the new site went up. Now I know where to find it...

The big problem again is that that can only be used to see when they last made a post.

Well I'm sure that kd5shw will work on the page and update it so that it will work with the new installment of Bungie.net. Until then we can use this to see at least which day they've logged on.

If such a feature was linked to our Windows Live Messenger, where we could then toggle our appearance? I wouldn't mind that. Especially since it could also be used as a supplement for PM's and thread reporting.

As long as members and Ninjas can turn the feature on and off, then it would be an excellent idea.

  • 03.26.2007 6:21 AM PDT

I think it would be a good feature for Groups, but not for the general public.

Now that is a fantastic idea.

I do believe there should be an online/offline appearance feature, but even moreso...

There should be an option to Report Thread and Report Post. When we hit that button (place appropriately next to "Reply" and "Message User" for the Report Post and up at the top with "New Topic" and "Save Thread" for Report Thread). When you press either of the buttons, messages will be sent out to any available mods.

Agreed. I like how members can report any thread on Gamespot and at Helium.

No, if you had say a bar at the bottom showing that for wevery member, how much sace do you think it would take up? And then people would be able to tell when mods arent watching to go KERBLAM DERSPAM! to the forums.

Absolutely no extra space at all. It would go right next to the message user link, where there's plenty of extra room.

And right now there is no real indication of when a mod is on or off. At least with a report user there would be a certain way to have a message automatically sent to a mod without having to dig around for one.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

No!

Online/offline features would subject any of us who decide to show that we're online to even more PM spamming to "plez join my teh awesum grup!" than we already get. Even more, it really seems to serve absolutely no purpose for regular members.

As far as online/offline features for the ninjas go, perhaps the feature could be useful there, but I'm not sure that THEY would appreciate the PM spam that they'd be subjected to every time they show up as being online either. Eventually, you'd have a situation where everybody automatically toggled the feature to "offline" as soon as they logged on, which would render the feature superfluous and useless.

What would be better would be a flagging feature -- but one that is well-developed and thought-out; not simply the "report thread" and "report post" idea above that has been copied from other (completely different in every way) forums. The idea that all members could report a thread, post, or user is far too simplistic and subject to far too much abuse for these b.net forums, as has been pointed out a few times in the Septagon.

This is not Gamespot nor is it Helium or any forum. Ideas for features on these forums must be thought out carefully, taking into account this site's particular idiosyncracies and user profiles.
