Halo 1 & 2 for PC

Subject: Sound problems on halo 1

I just got a new pc, which is 10x more powerful than my old one (it;s a pentium 4 dual core 3ghz, so that tells you alot about my old pc), anyway, I decided to "steal" my brotehrs copy of halo for the pc (he never plays it) and try it out now that I can play it. The thing is, I can't stand to play it just now cause the sound as it's very distorted, has loads of wee breaks in it. It's really bad in the warthog (but I prefer to call it the Puma, and no my name isn't Griff).

Now I'v tried updting my sound drivers but no luck, I've tried adjusting soun controls, but ended up messing up sound in other games by giving them the same problem a well as Halo (set back to previous settings so my other games are back to normal). This is realy driving me madand I couldn't make a word out of what was being said in the tunnel in the second level while in the "puma".

Can anyone help me?

Ohh and before you ask, I've tried upddating my drivers, and my comp specs are
intel pent d 925 dual core 3 ghz, with a 4mb cache at 800mhz
Running this on Vista Home premium
2 gb memory (at 533 mhz)
A 320GB Hard Disk, and belive me, I've barly filled it up so far.a 18x dvdrw and a 16x dvd-rom (which is also 40x CD-Dom, the game will be in either one).
512Mb (well that's what i ordered,DxDiag is saying 746mb)
and the only other useful spec (I think) is
A Creartive labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Sound Card (the basic , not the fetal1ty or whatever one)

I doubt it's sound card problems as it's very new, and newer games (like half Life 2 and Quake 4) are handling the card very well.

Hope this helps anyone helping me and thanks in advance for any help.

I had a similar problem, you need to check your sound settings, if you have hardware acceleration on and it happens turn it off, and vice versa. I know what you mean though, like when your driving a hog and then one of the engine noises goes away and it sounds well, weird. Try checking if they have any new drivers for vista for your sound card, that may be it.

Disable EAX and see if it fixes it.

OK firstly, thank you 2 for your suggestions.

I may sound like a noob, but how can I change the hardware accelaration? In game it's greyed out(even before a game is loaded), and nothing in the sound program that came with the drivers(which I got from the offical site). As for drivers, trtied it but I think I got the same drivers that came with the comp when download. Would it help at all if I said the drivers ISN'T WHQL (windows Hardware Quality logo) logo'd according to dxdiag? Just thought I should mention that just incase it made a diffrence. Ohh and I used the hog as an example, it happens in cutscense too as well as certain sounds on foot.

I can tell you EAX was off. before hand, (checked the wee program I mentioned above) Tried it both on and off after readin the replies and sadly nothing.

Ohh and 1 last detail incase it matters, I've updated the game to version 1.07, but it's not helped the sound at all.

again thanks for trying to help, and I welcome any other suggestions.

Yep, 32 bit version. It came when I got my new computer (I wanted to get xp as I din't want to break a computing rule, don't buy 1st version of programs, but I was kinda forced into it by the company so I just took it).

edit:Just noticed I forgot to add the word "windows" above when I gave my specs.

Wee breaks? Maybe Gearbox messed up that time, I don't know. You see, in order to keep a smoother framerate, your system will sometimes cut back on the sound effects. Which isn't cool.

Try to download the latest drivers for your hardware if you can.

He said above he already tried that, consider upgrading your sound card then.

No, upgrading is probably unnecessary.

As said above, I have downloaded the latest one (well unless their is a new oe since yesterday for the soundcard).

"Wee breaks" may of not been the best description. Just imagie having a convrsation with someone and all of a sudden they start talking l k t i m s f t e time but it's mre like i cuts out half of every sound (the example was the best couldexplain it. sill annoying a f**k and at times, near impossible to make out.

Well I would have said maybe your speakers are busted, but you mentioned it worked fine on some other games so I assume that isn't it.

I remember this happening to me when I was on integrated audio, it would run half life 2 fine, but would be choppy sometimes in halo. As soon as I switched to a non integrated card it worked fine though, and your soundcard is way better then mine. So if your speakers are accidentally hooked up to integrated audio I'd switch it to your other one...

I guess that doesn't really help at all. Oh well, bumpage.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

I have a huge assortment of sound cards, and the 2 games that always gum up on a lot of them are Silent Hill 2 and Halo PC. If you were using some cheapy on-board AC'97 chip with Windows XP, I would say upgrade, but since you're using a leet Creative Labs device I don't know what to tell you :(
