I play Custom Edition and there's a notice down the bottom saying "Manual update required, go to http://www.microsoft.com/games/pc/halo.aspx". So I went there and I followed the instructions:

1. Save the auto-patcher update file to the game install directory, such as c:\program files\microsoft games\halo. Overwrite the existing file. Remember to "save" this file, don't try to "open" it directly from the Web site.
2. After saving the file to the proper location, double-click the exe to install. If you receive an error message (such as strings.dll not found) you likely did not save it to the proper game install directory.
3. Start Halo and the new updated auto-patcher should prompt you to update your version to v1.06.

But it never prompted to update and the message was still there. Any clues as to why?

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

The message is always there even if you're updated. It's old. I guess someone should talk to whoever's in charge of that MOTD, but I don't know who that is.

I posted a message at Gearbox forums. It's here.
