To be honest I think it'd be cool to see how much posts you have made. They're on alot of other foumrs why not here?

Purely out of curiosity, i'd adore to see mine, just to see if i've hit 10k posts, but generally, its a very, very bad idea.

It could cause some problems.

  • 03.28.2007 12:02 PM PDT

No because then it would become a contest "who can have the most posts?!!?!?!!!?!". And then there'd be enormous amounts of spam.

  • 03.28.2007 12:03 PM PDT

Trailer Park Boys ~ One of the best Canadian made comedies ever.

Features like post counts tend to create Elitism and other problems.

Users will spam or create very blunt posts so they can get their post count up. Members will view themselves as being better than another user solely because of a higher post count.

Post counts bring too many cons into a forum for one ever to be implemented here.

You have 25 posts per page in your "More Posts by this user"

You have 40 pages max.

So (assuming you have a full 40 pages) it's always stuck at 1000 posts.

Unless it would be able to tell if there are more, I still don't understand why the "More Posts by This User" doesn't go back farther.

It's because as i said, its likely that i'm near 10,000 posts, and i dont post that often (3-4 a day, tops), there are some people who frequent the forums who will have much, much more than that. It'd put too much strain on the poor search engine to have to sift through 3 years of data to find tens of thousands of posts. That, and its unlikely you'll need to find anything that old anyway, as threads inactive for a certain amount of time are marked as "old" and locked.

I'll tell you why. Other forums encourage spam to get their activity levels up. The more activity there is, the more people use the site. The more people use the site, the more money the forum owner makes from advertisements. One great way to encourage more activity is to include a post counter. That is because whenever you have something that looks like a "score" on a forum for gamers, every gamer will try to get his "score" up to the maximum.

That is why these other forums are havens of spam, crap posts, poster arrogance, and neverending advertisements. Bungie.net is a refreshing oasis away from that, and I'd never want that to change.

Post count causes elitism, and I'm not just saying that to avoid 'trying something new, that could work'..

On top of that, there's no reason for it. Who cares how many posts you have?

Now that you've taken the time to look at my sig, I actually regret not providing you with something more worthwhile.

People would -blam!- if we had a legit post counter. I wouldn't mind it, but it won't happen. What I would like to see is kind of a generalized post counter.

Something like;

Post Count
None
A Few
Not too many
A decent amount
More than most people
Too damn many
Never met a thread he didn't like

anyone who's played more than you has no life

anyone who's played less than you is a noob

Bungie won't implement a post count because all Bungie employees would be required to stop posting at 777 or some variant thereof [7777].

Oh wait a minute... I just re-read what I wrote.... woops!!!! Haha

But still, the levels of bad posts here are nowhere near those on similar sites with post counters.

Achronos has stated that post counters would never be implemented in this site as long as he was Overlord. I agree with him because it generally tends to lead towards Elitism in the forums and spam.

If the post counter was only viewable by you, then I'd want one. It'd be nice to know your stats in more depth besides the ones you have from Halo 2.

Why the hell are you looking at this? Get out.

And no group invites, you jerk. I'm not interested.

"I'm smarter than you because I have two thousand more posts than you!"
"No, that just means you have no life!"
"You all are nubs. I've got 10k posts."
"Yeah, only 'cause you spam all the time."

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I might be to ashamed to see mine.

Been here awhile and it might label me a lose if i have alot.

----But im sure alot of people have explained and will explain why a post counter will cause spam or elitism....... ya know the typical reasons.

I'd like to see mine for the sake of knowing, but I know what would happen if all post counts were made visible.

Here on Bungie.net we (collectively as a community) would like to rather appreciate posts by their content value instead of quantity. You can make 1,000 posts on the forums. However it is their impact on the community that is what matters.

* Did those posts contribute to the community in some way?
* Did they inform someone or help someone? Did they prevent a potential hazard or problem?
* These are the things out of many to be considered when discussing posting.

You post something because it should have some postive value in it that benefits the Community. If you only make 100 posts in an entire year they can still impact the Community in an extremely large way. The "meat" of the post is what I treasure the most and appreciate. It is what allows me to actually understand who this user is. I use it to evaluate them for who they are.

You are what you post on the Internet, we can't judge you any other way on Bungie.net. I use this to determine whether I feel that someone is trustworthy or cool enough to talk to. I've met many friends by just reading a great post of their's and PM'ing them back and forth discussing it in depth. Hopefully that will help with this issue.
