This had boggled my mind ever since I first bought Halo: CE. Whenever I play it with friends everyone wants to play Hang 'em High. The damn game then just turns into a giant everyone shooting at everyone else with the pistol. It winds up being a rather bland experience yet everyone seems to think that the map is awesome. Why is that?

Mind Control. There are hidden messages on the tombstones.

Or it's because of the balance. It has long-range, short-range, and medium-rage fighting, for everyone's styles.

I don't like it. You'll have no shields in the tombstones, then get stuck, and die. I like cover, but this is overkill.

Here is why I enjoy Hang'em high:

The level is relatively even, this can be argued though because one side really has the higher ground.
Fall damage plays a big factor, if you run the wrong way, it could mean your demise.
No vehicles, its a big enough map for 4v4 and it doesn't need vehicles.
The pistol thing is not an issue, pistoling is always important in CE
Sneaking your way back to your base with the flag was always a challenge.
Even though you can sneak, the level is relatively open.
The general design of the level leads it self with working with team mates.

You pick up a lot of little things about the level that help you fight your opponent. I guess its mainly because the map is so balanced even though its large. The same could be said about most CE maps though.

I never liked it as much as Battle Creek, Blood Gulch, or Sidewinder, but Hang 'Em High is still one of my favorites maps. I think it appeals to so many people is because it does require some thinking to master, it's fairly simple in design, and it rocks in objective and slayer games.

Compared to the other maps on Halo 1.........this map gets the most out of the pistol. Which is the equivalent to a BR start in Halo 2. Hang em' High allowed marksman the chance to duke it out in an open, pretty big medium sized map........it's ideal for the pistol. Throw in some camo, and overshield, rocks and a sniper and you've got yourself a game. You obviously cannot run out in the open, unless you have a deathwish........but you can get from base to base with ample cover. Again, realize that Halo is a TEAM game........and if you haven't, you've already failed. If you're team shooting, you shouldn't have problems.........

CTF is a challenge and a lot of fun on this map.

When you get a flag back to your base, you know you've accomplished something big. It's not like Blood Gulch, where if you're lucky enough to massacre everyone at the base and steal away with the flag, team work and wits may win you the game. In Hang 'em High, though, no matter how many team mates you have helping you get out with the flag, you're all in the open. And the bland colours of the map doesn't hide you at all.

I guess people like Hang 'em High to perfect their sniping and TSKs.

People like it because its fun. Get 4v4 on this map and its just plain fun. It slows the game down just slightly so it isnt over too quickly like dammy, but it still has the same pace all h1 maps offer. Its also nice being able to get the sniper/rocket from multiple locations thus disallowing the other team both rocket and camo if you lose the fight for them. Its a fun map, not my personal favorite but it is one of the best maps.

It's a cool map. It makes no sense to me why there are large slabs of concrete sticking up, but it's a fun map. Slayers there aren't that interesting unless you've got at least 8 people. But CTF...that's where the real fun is.

Its a provocative map... just like the "My humps" song by the Black Eyed Peas.

I was also thinking that. Why is Hang em High so popular? What is so good about it? I dont remember it being that mind boggoling of a map... Then i played it...

Last night me and my cousin must have played it for about 3 hours straight, just that level and us two. 400% Health and shield, starting weapon Assault rifle and no sniping on map. It was amazing. The firefights are awsome and suits any playing style with long range shooting, close range carnage and medium range fighting, it was all good.

The weapon spawns are also perfect, the rocket launcher spawns in a unsafe place, but the payoff is huge with all the grenades and power ups that are up there. The shotguns also spawn in great places that are easily accesible and we used these most frequently for our carnage, The power ups are also plentyful, but there arnt to many, it doesnt feal over done, it feals just right and thats what it is, balanced and pefect.

In our game, becuase of the high health and shield it really was a challenge to get someone down, especailly when they were on a roll and had their weapons etc ready. A rocket killed in two direct shots, if you were lucky and teh AR took away a quarter of the shield if you were lucky, but that was the point, dog fighting. You take down more and more of their shield as their running away and they turn to try to stop you chassing them hopefully giving them enough time to go get a health pack and reload. You didnt mind sacrifficing a death because you took out half their health and wasted their ammo/grenades. Then you were hoping for a good spawn and try to get to them before they got to a health/ammo/power up etc. Then, when someone picked up the overshield as well....

The key way to getting a lot of kills i found was to use everything, keep swapping weapon. My two 'implements of destruction' was the shotgun and AR. I would pepper a few clips of AR into my cousin, use a few grenades and swap to my shotgun for the finish. But that was the main key, keep on swapping those weapons. It was also very intense. You cursed yourself at one missed shotgun blast, one missed punch, one rushed rocket or grenade. You had to use your grenades sparringly, they were precious and devastating if used right. But this didnt make it any less fun, it made it much more fun, much more fun indeed.

I could go on and on for hours saying why it was so great/fun and why i now really like the map, but i wont bore you any more...

I just hope they get Hang em High right in teh Halo 2 equivilent. WIthout the AR and good shotgun, without the scoped pistol, without the possibilty of having lots of health and none at all and without the fear of fall damage or at least the stun it gave you, will it be the same? I think it will be similiar in design and layout etc but they way it is played could differ hugely.

Me and my friends had the longest, funnest game on this map. It was a 2 vs 2 capture the flag and when we finally ended everyones kills were well over 200.

And what's wrong with that? :P

The map is quite simply just great. I could dive into detail, but I feel everybody else has already stated it.

Although, I can clearly understand how people tend to over rate and dislike it. It's like Blood Gulch. Everybody plays it, and thus, everybody ends up not liking it. I like Hang 'Em High. And Blood Gulch.
