I understand that they are moving in new directions and that Marathon and Halo are in different universes... but why? Why torture all of us old school, hardcore fans? We are the true Bungie fans! Not these 10 year old kids running around on Xbox Live! Bear with me, as I need to vent...

I don't need to explain all the ways the games are linked... you can surely find those links on a million different web sites. But why must Bungie do things like this:

Q

Is it true the rocket launcher in Marathon is the same as that in Halo?

A

Nope, but they both use the expression "SPNKR." It's a rocket thing

This is obviously not the case... they are the same rocket launcher! Maybe the Halo one is new and improved, but why can't they just fess up to it!

How cool would it be to have Cortana and Durandal duke it out.... or to run into some s'pht or Phor! They are obviously part of the Covenant. Hunters! Come on now. Did they thing they could sneak that by us? Oh, and the marathon symbol plastered everywhere! It’s one big tease.

I just think they could have at least gave us a few solid links between the two... I don't think that theses links would ever hinder the playing experience for people who never played Marathon, but it would surely raise the level of enjoyment for us old school fans.

p.s. sorry for breaking the no halo 2 rule, but I don’t think this thread could be appreciated in any other forum.

Agreed. Bungie is toying with us. =(
A good solid link between the games would be nice, but after much
speculation and hope, I think it was meant to be more of a nod to
long-time fans. I'm not a long time fan, but I've played Marathon and
read the story page a couple of times and I love it. It's too bad
that some of those characters didn't return, although it may have
been better to leave the Marathon story the way it was. . .perfect.
I'm enjoying Halo's story a great deal so far, but it lacks the edge
Marathon had.

****SPOILERS(minor)****

I heard rumors about an unlockable MP map called Marathon.
I'm playing through the campaign on Legendary, (still not done)
so hopefully that's part of it. Anyone know if it exists/how to
unlock it?

Ach! Was ist los?

As a rule, Bungie doesn't do unlockable content.

--Sgt. Smith notes that somebody with an HEK and some free time could probably create a kickass Marathon mod for Halo CE...

We’ve watched while the stars burned
Out, and creation played in reverse.
The Universe freezing in half-light.
Once I thought to escape.
To end a master, step out of the
Path of collapse. Escape would make us God.
Yet I cannot help but remember one enigma,
A hybrid, elusive destroyer.
This is the one mystery I have not solved.
The only element unaccounted for.

It's my opinion that they should combine Halo 3 into the Marathon universe by having us run into Durandal. WOuld that not be cool?
Does anyone know where that bit of fanfiction Recon wrote is?

I got the feeling after finishing Halo 2 that the chances of a solid link appearing are very slim

Apparently you've never played Marathon.

I'm certifiable.

You'd be whistling a different tune if the Drinnol beast had made it in. Dang, of all the critters they had to cut, that one stings the most. Or maybe the Engineer; I was looking forward to a nice long conversation with Mr. Sniffles, the flying squid/aardvark hybrid.

That would be so awesome if they linked Halo and Marathon...

...unfortunatly according to the storylines, that's impossible. For one, the two dates in which Marathon supposedly took place at are both decades if not centuries apart from the story of Halo. That and part of the point of Marathon is that it was launched in the 22nd century and drifted (supposedly) for a few hundred years until it reached an uncharted planet known as Tau Ceti. The Marathon was so far away from human existence that in one level where you're required to send a distress signal to Earth, Leela says afterwards (in so many words), "Good job on warning the human race about the Pfhor, it'll take about 97 years for them to get your message." which you could interpret as "We're so far away from Earth that it's funny." And if that weren't enough, you go even further away towards nowhere during the second and third games. For all we know Marathon is so far out there that every Halo could have been activated before the story started and you wouldn't even know about it, but I don't know if that's true or not (certainly would be cool).

The only actual link they could have between the two is if they made mention of the Marathon in Halo as part of history. Otherwise we're given playful connections like the Mjolnir Mark V & VI armor as opposed to security officer's Mjolnir Mark IV armor, same thing with the SPKNR rocket launchers, the assault rifle, the magnum, etc. just easter eggs to offer homage to the original games.

I'd like to think of Halo 1 & 2 as Marathon 4 & 5, but the only similarities they have are that they exist in the same universe and timeline.

On second thought, and it has been speculated, but people think that it is possible that the Forerunner from Halo 1 & 2 who had built the installations are the same as the Jjarro from the Marathon series. It's a theory that can't be discounted since so little is known about either one, and the theory is only strengthened by their similarities; a long-dead race that made technology that even by the story's modern standards are way advanced.

Sorry, I have an intimate relationship with these five games; they're my favorite game series of all time.
