For about a month before Halo 2 was released the bungie forums were brought down to avoid and spoilers on the forums. For the most part it did cut down on many people having new features and plot details ruined, but it also left many people disgruntled with the fact they couldnt get the latest scoop from fellow gamers and hear speculation. So my question to you is should Bungie close their forums for Halo3 in the way they did for Halo 2 and if so for how long.

Yeah. We must've had uber hax or something in order to access them, if I recall correctly...

I think the answer to the question is, "no." I seriously doubt Bungie's going to shut down the site because of a few little "spoilers." People post spoilers all the time. It's your choice as to whether or not you choose to read them.

  • 04.03.2007 9:21 AM PDT

Uhmm no, although it may be wise for them to have more mods or inform people that if they include spoilers in their post they should add it to the title of the thread as well.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

No reason to take down the forums. I guess we could put up a sticky saying read threads at your own risk. In the end if you are visiting a forum on the game developers site then you should have the common sense to expect something that might spoil the game for you. Just my two cents.

No reason to, besides, what about all the people who want to discuss the ending of Halo 3?

I think offering the ending of Halo3 as a Marketplace download seems like a good idea.

No we didn't.

We did permanently ban a great many people then, though. Many of those people are still pissed they got banned during that time.

hmm i could of sworn it was but then again i may just be becoming more and more insane as i age. Although i know it was still on many peoples minds particularly close to launch as seen in http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=915999 where the majority of people wanted the forums shut down. Although there havent been many (if any?) spoilers yet on bungie.net for halo 3 i was just tossing the idea out for future purposes :)

I know of at least one fan site that shut itself down as the administrators didn't want to risk spoilers in their community... but I don't recall bungie.net hitting the "off" switch. Then again, I did stay away from all fan sites for about two weeks at that time myself.

I avoided the forums almost entirely around that 2 or 3 week period before it was released. I plan to do the same, unless there's some reason for me to be on the forums.

That's the easiest way of avoiding spoilers.

Haha, sucks to get old, doesn't it?!?! Same thing happens to me on occassion.

But it did not happen on the Bungie.net forums. If you look around pages 3100 to 3200 of the New Mombasa forum, you'll see that users were (extremely) actively posting right up until and through Halo 2's launch.

Frank O'Connor is a 12-year veteran of the videogame magazine industry and has therefore never worked an honest day in his life.

If you look though the polls (last page most likely) you can see a question asking if the forums should be shut down. Those were some crazy times.

Even though I wasn't actually registered back then, I was browsing the forums, and I don't recall it going down. I recal a large hubub of activity before and after the game came out. Lots of speculation, lots of "OMG I BEAT IT!" threads and such. Sure it's spam. Then again, we'll all be excited about it when it comes out. So no, it shouldn't go offline.

You've got to think crazy, of course, because you only get innovation by refining insanity. - Jason Jones

lol, why did all those people get banned? I remember before the halo 2 crowd got here how "normal" it was if you can say that. There was a definitive difference in population and activity between the day before and the day after the announcement trailer. And i dont remember the site shutting down. I know i didn't come here until i finished the game as to not get it ruined for me. Also, bungie shouldn't shut the site down. If people dont want it ruined they shouldn't come to the site, the only problem is the traffic, if thats a problem at all.

lol, those crazy kids, if you look at the author, about 85% of them are blacklisted. I guess thats the way bungie cleans out, it brings out a new game and waits for the spam to begin : D

Not all were blacklisted. Many were just inactive and had their accounts deleted between now and then.

Yeah, I've only had way too many games/movies spoiled by... challenged... people who don't have the common sense to know I don't like endings spoiled. Pisses me off.

Even hinting as to what the ending is, or what it's like pisses me off.

But concerning the matter of temporally killing the H3 forums, I'd have to say no. The one thing everyone will want to do when Halo 3 comes out is well... talk about Halo 3, and where better than Bungie.net. It's up to you to decide if you want/don't want to visit the Halo 3 forum, and it's up to you to decide which thread you want to visit. And besides, knowing the incredibly... awesome... majority of our community, the Halo 3 threads would spill in to The Underground (more-so), because it's the first forum they see.
