An idea has been running through my head lately for the New Hawtness V2. An idea to possibly increase activity in groups, and add an extra element in.

Chapter Wars. Hear me out, here. Upon creating a group, you have a choice to give it a "rival group(s)", in which your group and your "rival group(s)" compete against one another. Not like tournaments, no, but member count, forum activity, et cetera. Every month, the rankings for your groups, based on number of members and activity, will be given to you.

I know this idea probably sounds insane to most of you, but give it a thought, don't post on impulse, and give an honest critique on how it would/wouldn't work.

I can understand that there are a lot of repercussions possible with this, but bear in mind, this idea is only a rough draft.

I honestly don't really care for this idea Matt, nor is it your brightest. Among all things, Chapter Wars is what was most common before the New Hawtness came in. So, with this idea we would be encouraging it? Yes, I know, not completely; but no matter, it would still be encouraged. Personally, I think Chapters should just stick to groups of friends and wonderful discussions. No need for a stick measuring contest, so to speak, you all know what I am talking about.

Unfortunately, quality isn't a tangible factor. It's all opinion-based. You can say "<insert group name here> is the worst group of all time!", but another person could say the opposite.

This really has nothing to do with quality, and it would have no affect on you as a person.

True, but it would have an effect on the group as a whole. Thus, making it hard for some to even recruit to to people these days wanting to be part of the "big thing".

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Matt,

I do not think that this is a good idea - namely because chapter wars are not friendly, haha "rivalries" like a school has with another school in sports. Chapter Wars are much dirtier affairs -- much like real war. Personally, I do not care so much about a group or its alliances or whatever, but it is undeniable that many people take their groups and their "alliancies" or "rivalries" far too seriously.

So-called "spies," forum conquerers, account stealing, spam (in the groups, in your PM box, and on the forums), and dirty PM tricks are a small example of the kinds of very real effects that a b.net-sponsored chapter war would have. This, of course, would spill over into complaints and posts on the general Bungie forums (especially the Septagon), as we have seen as recently as today (I'm not saying that today's posts were the result of chapter wars, because we don't know for sure, but I am saying that this is an example of the kind of thing you'd see).

When groups were up, every little while we'd get a series of posts on the Septagon complaining about a group or series of groups. For an example, see this thread.

Do we really want a repeat of this kind of thing? Again, I reiterate that these forums are not like a school rivalry that nobody takes seriously -- some people take these chapters extremely seriously, to the point where the drama is both annoying and somewhat dangerous.

Increasing the activity in groups must not depend on chapter wars. There are better ways -- such as condensing the number of groups and increasing their available features -- than this method.

I respectfully disagree with this idea.

You mean there are people who would consider a group with 700+ members, less than 30 of whom are active even weekly, to be a 'quality' group?
Even abstractions have standards, Matt.

My God. NO. With no signatures and the Classified being pretty much a wasteland, PMing is going to be pretty much the only way of recruiting new members - rivalries would increase the amount of PMs huuugely. >.<

Agreed. There is too much competition already. I like each group for its own merits.

Not a good idea. It's just promoting something that most of us are already tired of. I'm pretty sure the number of PMs in my box would increase as well.

Anyway I don't like the idea. Chapter wars could become something personal and after much waring we get the Axis and Alliance.... Bungie Civil War(Yes this was exagerated.)

hmm... i've had way too much of group wars already. i had my group taken, both groups. more than both. several. but that was a long time ago.

and i don't want those times to return. similarly to the thread about auto-ranks, where people can get ranks for posting more, it'd only bring out the stupidity in people. just like the world. to hell with it! NO WAY!

Back in the ol'days. Me and Newnab both had chapters. In fact, we kinda were rival chapters. But all of that was in good fun. I liked his chapter, he liked mine, and we both tried to help eachother out. Of course, that wouldn't go without a certain nudge or little bash. Sometimes he would say my chapter sucked, and I would respond by saying that his chapter was overly British.

But all of that was in good fun. We helped, and sometimes we were rivals, because it was fun to do. But the reasonit was fun, was because Nab and I were "friends". In such, the idea of a group wars is fun.

But the two of us did such a thing without a given system. Nor was such a thing needed, nor is it now.

I have a good idea. Lets go out into the streets and kill people. Hear me out, I don't have any specific reasons why this could be a good idea, but it's just a rough draft.

The message? If you post an "insane" idea (your words, not mine), flesh it out for holes and think up good points to it before unleashing it on the forums.
